  1. how old is she Wolfie and do you use her on the moor or as a general purpose dog?
  2. As wolfie said up to £850 for the wirehaired vizsla not sure if the smooths are the same. Not difficult to train at all but you cant be hard on them raising your voice is enough they are very sensitive. Try and get a pup from working lines and be prepared for a high energy dog who needs a lot of free running
  3. it depends on their breeding to be honest. My big dogs mother was from a working line and he is an impressive powerful dog just like a big lab with hair. ive seen some that wouldnt do the job and others that would. its like all dogs
  4. 3 labradoodles. only the 8 year old of which works to the gun the bitch doesnt and we have a pup which will probably end up our lasses pet, a kelpie x lurcher (my ferreting dog) and a 10 month old wirehaired vizsla in full training.
  5. 8 weeks usually. re call whistle for feed times and then a sit and a little wait for her dinner, retrieving as a game most days and getting her on the lead and walking sensibly as soon as she has had her jabs. Car training as soon as possible just dont feed her before hand and most importantly getting her eye contact as often as you can, i like to see a dog looking for me. Proper training is just an extension of all of this and you can judge how the pup matures what elements she is ready for
  6. its not for everybody but the kennel club gundog level 1, 2 and 3 are ideal for new owners. I am sure there is a group near you somewhere. Its all about getting the basics in and its good networking who knows you might even get an intro to more shoots. Good luck with her.
  7. I know what you mean usually those are the poor dogs that are getting a kicking because their owners expect them to do everything perfectly even though they have had no training during the off season!
  8. All of the above is good advice but try a retrieve with your back to an obstacle like a wall or hedge she cant get through and just sit down after she has picked the dummy up. When she comes in to investigate make it all a good game. Im not sure about not teaching pointers to retrieve for me its important that its all a big game from an early age. Maturity will come eventually at around 12 years old
  9. As above, if you have one to sell let me know
  10. After watching a few dogs collapse or just jack in working This season (Mentioned in an earlier thread) How much daily exercise do you give your dogs to keep them fit and do you do anymore on the build up to the season? I must admit i exercise my dogs a lot (We home board and do day care for dogs so we are constantly exercising mutts) I vary the terrain just to stop us getting bored but the working dogs run beside the bike and do a fair bit of swimming in the summer. I know that they do get a lot fitter during the season my big dog feels like he is made of steel by the time the grouse is
  11. A dog that could set nets and then gather them in would be handy I have a little kelpie x she is more than fast enough and very good at tippy toeing about sets.
  12. Big ferret, i came across a feral albino jill and it attacked my dogs who got out of its way pretty quick. The same dogs would chop a stoat in a blink but obviously ferrets are family but it was funny
  13. Now i know you can find anything on the internet if you look hard enough but i cant beleive such a low protein content exists in a pure animal product. Im no biologist, chemist or nuclear rocket scientist. So i found this in a Boxer dog web site and ive had a word with the bloke at our feed place and he says that you can feed a working dog on pure tripe and the dog will suffer no ill affects so for the sake of FRIENDLY argument prove me wrong? "As for the 8% protein, that's not low in terms of hydrated food. You can't make a straight comparison between normally hydrated foods and kibble. O
  14. Ive ferreted every month of the year when clearing farms and suprisingly very little digging to young rabbits they seem to bolt before the big ones
  15. I give the ferret the command "Release" then "Hup" which is the command to jump back in the box then "Shut" which is the command to close the lid of the box behind them.
  16. Thanks lads, its a one off for them just thought they could have some meat to chew on rather than just biscuit
  17. I have just cut up a couple of cow tripes for the dogs and thrown some of the left overs in for the ferrets as im off out tomorrow (if we arent snowed in!) and ive only given them dry food today. Anyone had any adverse reactions to feeding tripe? I normally feed whatever ive shot be it birds, squirrels but mostly rabbit and the odd day on the dry if i havent defrosted a carcass. i dont reckon a bit of tripe will do them any harm as they eat all of the carcasses even the pelts.
  18. make sure you dont let the dog have every retrieve or on shoot day your dog will claim every bird
  19. ive only seen 2 short hair vizslas work before both were fine and my own seems fine at the minute but he has a way to go. However i have seen some super crunchers amongst the labs and spaniels. One 2k field trialler tried to eat a grouse in front of its owner who also owned the moor we were on so no one made a fuss.
  20. What age do they start to calm down Belly? mine is 10 months old now and mad as a hatter. Very easily trained and has taken everything ive asked of him in his stride but he is the forest gump of the dog world he just keeps running and he probably doesnt know why!
  21. its the same every year in my opinion. ive had young in rabbits in every month of the year over many years. it just depends on the weather before the snow it was 10 degrees which is warm enough for grass to grow so an aggressive survivor such as fluffy bunny will make the most of every chance to profligate the species. just like rats and mice if there is enough food there will be babies
  22. a lot of spaniels are being stolen at the moment by gypsy theiving rotten b*****ds, you could have someones stolen dog? Have a look on www.doglost.co.uk What would you do if she is on there?
  23. What are they like to work? The one i know is a massive dog with a head like a bucket but its a pet
  24. nope only seen one chesapeake before and all it wanted to do was fight
  25. With a lurcher its a different game it is a hazard of the job, lamping, ferreting is an unpredictable sport and the dogs are travelling at speed i had a bitch hit a hidden reel of abandoned wire it was a nasty incident. I spent a lot of yesterday lifting my big gun dog over fences he could have jumped them but i wouldnt risk it. At 8 years old he has never been cut or hung up but then again its a slower sport
