Do you keep your birds in tier cages or on the ground? I keep two trio's in double tier cages in a shed and another two trio's in open run's on the lawn...another trio in a lit room and 15 hen's to about 2 male's in a 7ft x 7ft mesh fronted outdoor enclosure.. Indoor cages inside of a shed..the bottom one is not used at the moment Outdoor 7ft x 7ft mesh fronted enclosure..the bird's in the picture are not in there now. This is my indoor lighted room it does get natural light but it is still a bit dark without a bulb in there..it is mainly used as my rearing room but when e

I'm not sure how many hen's i have ARRAN i would guess at around 30 hen bird's and about 7 cock bird's..i have had hen's laying without a cock bird being in with them but i could not tell you if they will keep on laying without a cock bird being in there..i would be careful putting them in with adult chicken's as the quail could be bullied or killed they don't need nest boxes..but they do like a separate enclosed area where they do sometimes go and lay..but the majority of the time they just lay the egg's anywhere..it's a shame you where not closer i have about 15 nice coloured quail here tha

Well i have re read the post this morning and it look's a little different..the information is not too far of the mark from my experiences..but egg production should be more than 6 a week..for me the humidity is too high through out incubation and does not need raising if you leave the incubator alone till hatching has finished..they need turning a lot more than 3 times a day to help stop splayed leg's and breach deformed chick's..they should start pipping on day 17 anything after day 18 will most likely be weak and need culling..and the chick's should have varied heat..100F - 37.5C at the cen

The way he is going it will be the other way around and the female will need to be kept safe..

He was as fat as butter at that weight mate..he will fly at 1. 14 when fit but he may fly slightly higher this year if all goes according to plan..

From what i have read from your first post you want the egg's for eating so in theory you dont have to worry about hatching them get 5 hen to 1 cock..i have Japanese/Coturnix quail here and they lay a egg every 18hr's aslong as they are getting over 12 hours daylight..when the photoperiod changes during the winter month's the laying slow's down ..what i do to combat this is put a low watt light bulb on a timer to keep them going..after a year of constant laying they seem too slow down so need replacing.

gergan i have been breeding a lot of quail for 2yr's now with a only a little break from hatching ..i have also been keeping and rearing them during this time and a lot of what you of said i don't agree with from personal experience..i have read similar stuff elsewhere to what you have stated but at the end of the day it is wrong information.

Here is a couple of pictures i got of Genghis..ive spent a bit of time watching him today and he is not yet ready to be pulled out..his next two tail feathers either side of his mounting deck's are only half way down which is understandable really..but i thought he would of finished by now with the amount of pigeon/quail/pheasant and rabbit he has been eating..not too worry though it wont be long now.. ..and i cant wait to get him out and making a dent in the native and none native wildlife.. ...i wonder if he can beat his last season's first pulled weight of 2. 8..

You have got my mouth watering with them picture's..i love a bit of mackerel.

Awsome shot's..you can even see the fellow's little head in the first picture..

I know it does not seem many hen's from 11 egg's matey but it is by far not a failure ..i will be powering 2 octogan 20's up in a few day's with over 200 quail egg's double stacked and i will be more than pleased if i end up with half of them by the time of maturity..
-
Good stuff matey.. and he seem's to of come out a nice size.. i cant wait to see him on them pheasant and bunnies..Genghis will be out soon and i will have to have a trip down your way for a bit of sport.. .

Saxon tiring's and tiring again is the way forward..dont do anything new unless he is on a tiring..and if he is over faced step back for a day but end the day on a good note with no bating prior to being placed on his bow... Make a date when you want to change that other jess and the night before soak a nice piece of rabbit back leg in water..dont give him any other food prior to doing this..once he start's eating slowly remove the jess..if you find it difficult and he is manned to other folk get your mate to help you. You really need to nip this in the bud because when he is loose and hunti

I had the same trouble when Ian upgraded the site..just use the key board for now mate to copy and paste and hopefully Ian will nail the problem soon.. To copy hold Ctrl then press the C button. To paste hold Ctrl then press the V button. I know it's a ball ache and does not happen on other sites but im sure Ian will sort the problem when he is home. -
Small cock's are cold.. big hard cock's are warm.. aswell as being hard again..they can cause much pleasure for some and pain for other's.. Anyway back to the topic does anyone want to do some wife swaping..whoop's i mean cock quail swapping.

I thought they where all water proof mate but if some of the transmitters out there are not .. i would find them pretty useless in this country..
-
Im not selling them im swapping them..and i will be necking them and putting them in the freezer not shooting them..

Definitely mate it's the way forward ..i remember when Genghis hit a bottom strand on a fence while chasing a pheasant when out with ian..he bent the spring back over and was lucky not to rip his deck feathers out..ever since then i alway's double up with a leg mounted micro. bent spring
