So What is the Best Rifle Scope?
fireblade_rrw replied to fireblade_rrw's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Oh strong opinions there ! In bold capitals too ! I'm intrigued as to what the 'real world' is ? -
In this case you really do get what you pay for......

I’ve noticed on this and many other shooting forums, every now and again a post will crop up asking ‘what scope should I use’, or ‘what’s the best rifle scope’, so I thought I’d start a deliberately provocative but hopefully objective article that we can all add to and share. I’ll start by saying, in my opinion, there isn’t a ‘best rifle scope’ what there is however, is the best scope for a particular application; eg: there’s probably no point in putting a top of the range Swarovski scope on an old airgun to shoot at cans in broad daylight! I’ve used many scopes on my rifles, both expensiv

Rangefinders v Rangefinder Binoculars
fireblade_rrw replied to fireblade_rrw's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Thanks PC Did you buy them second hand off eBay? -
Been thinking on splashing out on a rangefinder, however after doing some tests at the Scottish game fare last weekend, I think it would be more sensible to get a pair of binos with a built in rangefinder. I tried out stand alone rangefinders - Opticron, Hawke, Zeiss & Leica, and only the Zeiss & Leica would get pass marks. The Opticron is only good for around 300yds on solid targets, and the Hawke is just rubbish. Both the Zeiss & Leica worked well and i was raging on trees up to 400yds, with clear LED displays. However... When I tried the Leica rangefinder binocular,

I have to be honest and say that to my eyes Leupold scopes are no better than top end Nikko scopes or Bushnell scopes and I am not that impressed with Nightforce scopes. It seems to me that " Made-in-American " means that it must be top notch and as most Yanks shoot, their opinions seem to overwhelm the Internet. If I were to spend £1500, it would have to be either Swarovski or S&B. There would have been a time when I would have put Zeiss up there as well, but again to my eyes, the modern Zeiss optics are a world away from the Zeiss optics we were seeing in the late 's to late 90's. I'd seriously look at this scope: http://www.uttings.co.uk/Product/766/105491/docter-optics-classic-illuminated-3-12x56-ir-rifle-scope/ Its much better than Leuplod & Nightforce & in my opinion up there with Swaro & Zeiss for low light optical performance. I've been using this scope now since December last year and its low light performance is nothing short of outstanding. Certainly on par with my mates Swaro x 56. My other mates Nightforce is way behind for low light performance. Get in touch with Ayrshire shooting supplies and they will undercut anyone.

Think you will find that any German or Austrian optics are much more expensive in the states. Leupold or Bushnell stuff tends to be cheaper, however Swaro or Zeiss stuff is cheaper in Europe.

Can't fault Winchester subs - for more years than I can remember !

Tracer LEDRAY GL4 Tactical Gun Lamp
fireblade_rrw replied to BunnyHunter's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Do you know the law? Suggest you read the one hour before and after dusk part mate.... Or are just being a wee cynic? Obviously you've NOT been using an illegal artificial illuminating device to shoot deer! There are several LED torches on eBay at great prices that do the job very well, spending loads on a lamp isn't really necessary. -
Tracer LEDRAY GL4 Tactical Gun Lamp
fireblade_rrw replied to BunnyHunter's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
This is well outwith your budget and some on here dont like it. However, I've been using it constantly now for a few months, mostly for shooting foxes, and on the odd occasion Roe at dusk when the scope loses definition. Its way too expensive, however none of the scope mounted lights come close to it for range & definition. You'd need to go back to using a Lightforce or Gen3 NV. If you are flush, and can live with the mount (crap) then it would tick all your boxes including the need for filtering - you wont need it! There is also no glare from the barrel. Hope this helps: h -

Have a look at Docter stuff - outstanding German optics, and really hard to beat for the price. Not cheap, but cheaper than Swaro's

JETBeam BC40 high power LED lamp review
fireblade_rrw replied to stevienicknacks's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Heres a picture of the lamp mounted, this is a link to the figure of 8 mount: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250774670363&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_2903wt_945 Ive also tried the cheap China imports but they just dont give the range that this ione does or the clarity of beam. Yes I think you can but the weapon mount individually. The mount can be adjusted left adn right but not vertically. Ive found that between 100 and 200 yards the beam is wide enough to cover any shot. Many thanks, I dont suppose you could do a couple of closer pics of the mount -
JETBeam BC40 high power LED lamp review
fireblade_rrw replied to stevienicknacks's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
That's a great write up, thanks for taking time to do it. Couple of questions for you; Can you post a link for the figure of 8 mount? Is it adjustable ? If not how do you keep the light centered? Can you buy the jet beam mount separately? I've imported a couple of Cree Q5 torches from China, the latest one is rated at 800lumins. Cost injuring charger, 2 batteries and UK adapter was £14 including postage. I haven't put it on a gun yet, but it illuminates well beyond 200yds easy ! It's aluminum and totally waterproof, with 1'' diameter for mounting. I really can believe it wa -
Thought about buying from the states but I've been put off by potential UK import taxes? Anyone got some info or advice on this ? Ta

I've shot 6 foxes with one, but it's only good for 150-200yds, I use a lamp for general searching, then laser for final approach. It doesn't seem to bother them so much as a lamp. I also shot a buck a couple of weeks ago when it was dusk - I wouldn't have managed it with just the scope, which is top quality. Agree it's over priced, but then again so is NV kit IMO !

Classic error - all moderators should be taken off, cleaned & oiled after ever use. I keep mines in a lightly oiled cloth and the barrel slightly lubricated with silicon grease. Comes off and on with no problem. Reason I do this is a friend of mine (a gunsmith) showed me the results of a seized on T8 moderator. - not nice !

Laser Genetics ND3X50 Review
fireblade_rrw replied to fireblade_rrw's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
That's a bummer, but I guess the quality is utter rubbish on the mount. The back screws on mine look 'chewed' and I'm an engineer ! Its obviously poor quality materials they are using. I'd also email BSA who are the UK distributor - insist on a new mount ! I'd also email them a link to this thread. Let us know how you get on. -

Laser Genetics ND3X50 Review
fireblade_rrw replied to fireblade_rrw's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Shame you didn't get on with it. Funnily enough my mate picked up eyes last night way out with the lamp, but it was unsettling it,switched to laser and whilst wasn't so clear, the fox just sat looking and wasn't bothered with it. Wouldn't come closer with the call mind. -
Well I'm struggling to get replies or info about buying on the site? If anyone reads this & can advise, or help, please let me know
