  1. A tree or sticks mate, any modern rifle with a big mod ie t8, wildcat, pes, ect will be front heavy, but how often do we take a free hand shot with a fullbore cf rifle? Not often is the answer, out of all the foxes I shot last year I think only one or perhaps two were freehand.
  2. I quite agree, and if shooting a lot ie decoying pigeons/crows, I will always opt for fibre wads, and yes always pick spent shells up (when you can find them semi auto shooters take note) let it also be remembered that although most modern o/u and semi auto guns will be multi choke, there are thousands and thousands of shooters out there shooting with fixed choke s/s and to a lesser degree o/u generally most game guns will be choked something along the lines of imp/half quarter/half so unless the back trigger is pulled first the first shot will almost always be with the most open choki
  3. As I have said previously, improved cylinder for everything, obviously a change in shot size/type dependent on the quarry, lets face it most quarry is shot at 25- 40 yards so why hinder yourself with a tight pattern, modern plastic wad cartridges especially wildfowling cartridges deliver a reasonably tight pattern, anyway, I may do a little (not particularly scientific) experiment and take a tight choke with me next time I am pigeon shooting, then change half way through and note the difference, but I think I already know the result.
  4. That's quite ok mate I did not take offence, yes different cartridges will deliver different pattern density according to shot type/size and wad type/construction, as you say mate whatever works for you is good, I have a little 16 bore Baikal hammer gun and I shoot it pretty well and have not got a clue what chokes it has, although being Russian I suspect it is pretty tight, I think on the whole people worry far too much about choke and not on marksmanship, but for me come sept the 1st and I pull down the first mallard of the season at a good height with my imp cylinder, I will be secure in th
  5. Yes of course it is a chance, everytime you slip your dog, bird, whatever, but if you did not take any chances you would never work your animals, I have always thought it a risk worth taking, some may not, shit happens if the dog/bird/horse ect gets killed or injured doing what it does then so be it, life is full of risks.
  6. I really really hope that you did not think Rake was being serious??? Let me give you a bit of advice my friend, dress up smartish, take your license, insurance with you and get out and bruise your knuckles on some farm doors, if you get knocked back be polite and thank them for their time, then try, try, try again, until you get some, get to some farmers markets/sales, and into the pub after the sales, and get chatting to the farmers, be cheeky and don't give up, we all have to do it pal there is no easy way, but look at it this way they can only say no, good luck.
  7. Indeed mate, and I am convinced razor sharp talons are essential, for squirrel hawking,my fhh talons were always razor sharp and she had a few and never got bitten,in fact on a couple the talon had penetrated the eye into the brain, so no biting there
  8. Hi all, off up to Runswick bay next week, does anyone know how its fishing atm and if anyone has any tips I would really appreciate it, I am not a fantastic sea angler (fly fisherman) but I usually manage to catch something edible when I go away, lol, even if its just mackerel, so thanks lads any help greatly received or indeed if anyone is up that way and fancies meeting up for a spot of water thrashing let me know.
  9. Well all I can say is I have been shooting shotguns for the last 30 + years and I have pretty much seen it all, I will reiterate, I have killed plenty of geese, and duck at 45 yards + to know where my confidence lies, with a 32 gram quality cartridge I have consistently dropped woodies stone dead at 50 yards with imp cylinder, ok I may be a slightly better than average shot, but it is where you point the gun that counts not what metal tube you have screwed in the end, again tight chokes are a handicap, but I guess experimentation is one of the joys of shooting and finding out for yourself.
  10. We shall see how it goes, but I know the males are a bit more biddable than the females, the thing with redtails is all about finding a weight they will fly at then repetition and good rewards, the mistake is to keep dropping the weight, then they get dangerous, or go into fasting mode.
  11. I quite agree,I suspect those high pheasant shooters would do better if they used an open choke and stuck to a 36gm cartridge, if only they had the courage to try it.
  12. now that has convinced me thought about doing my wheels black for ages, much better.
  13. Yes it was a hard decision to make, even thought about a male gos for a bit, but as I love my lamping a gos is out really, and as I really like squirrel hawking as well everything just kept saying redtail, have to say they do look the business on kills, and that footing power is awesome, I just hope the stories I might relate don't consist mainly of me spending hours under trees swinging a lure lol
  14. I quite agree the male has not got the power to subdue them,( well the big ones)my last fhh had a few and never got bitten, but I am looking forward to the male redtail having them this year. have you been and saw the redtail bud? Yes mate pick him up aug 10th all being well, cant wait, squirrels beware lol.
  15. In answer to your question, no I have never owned a Hatstand, and would not have one given to me, however a pal bought one a couple of years ago, and to be fair he shot very well with it,however it constantly jammed on the second shot,he had it from brand new and had it back in the shop numerous times and it never got sorted he got so pissed off with it he got a refund and bought a nice second hand Franchi, which has never let him down, clay shooting I have seen people struggling with their jammed Hatstand enough times to realise that his gun was not a bad apple, the above mentioned shop will n
  16. Well let me just say, shoot big shot out of your tight choke wildfowling and you will ruin your pattern, I use nothing but imp cylinder in my Benelli auto for everything and believe me I have killed enough ducks stone dead at 45 yards plus to be absolutely convinced that open chokes are best, it always makes me laugh to see equipment man changing his chokes for every stand clay shooting and then go and shoot like a tw-t, tight chokes may have a place on the clay line for some disciplines, but for normal game/rough/wildfowling they are a handicap.
  17. Yes that will be true cylinder in fact, improved is a little tighter, but as the eminent James Wentworth Day used to say choke is an invention of the devil
  18. Nice solid gun these, ideal for somebody wanting a first o/u or a reliable rough shooting gun.
  19. Spot on I always use vermex, it is brilliant stuff and birds are in fantastic condition with just a bit each month.
  20. I quite agree the male has not got the power to subdue them,( well the big ones)my last fhh had a few and never got bitten, but I am looking forward to the male redtail having them this year.
  21. Just shoot the bloody thing with the quarter choke you have in it, the difference between imp and quarter is nine tenths of f-ck all lol.
  22. You beat me to it mate, spot on advice, if you don't do it then they will get somebody who will simple as that.
  23. Don't buy a Hatstand you will regret it £500 will get you a very nice second hand Berreta, Benelli (the best) Franchi, Winchester, that will do all you want, I repeat, DO NOT BUY A HATSTAND IT WILL JAM, they are cheap nasty crap, buy one of the above and enjoy.
  24. It is a nice change when someone reacts like that, me and the Seeker were rabbiting one sunday afternoon a couple of years back, a guy walking his dog comes up to us and asks us about what we were doing, opon telling him we were rabbiting he says oh I own the land over there pointing to his land, can you come and shoot some of my rabbits please they are getting out of control. Also its different areas that have various attitudes to shooting, IE out wildfowling on the wash walking back after flight, I have never had a funny look or anything negative from dog walkers ect, some even stopping an
  25. Slight correction, you must be 18 or over to purchase an airgun and ammo, not 14, however you may be given a shotgun as a gift at 15, I would say go for it pal get your cert.
