  1. Nothing to do with me, but there is a very tidy looking BSA hornet on guntrader for 320 quid that would be worth buying if its a good one as they usually are
  2. Really well that's not what I was told I was told they count as loaded rounds, that is exactly why they cannot be sent in the post in this country, just another example of different forces applying the rules in their own way,for instance in Derbyshire or South Yorks I can buy bullets for reloading and the rfd does not put them down on my ticket, however go into west Yorkshire and they will not even take them off the shelf if you don't agree to have them marked down on your ticket????? And finally Hawkeye primers are not mentioned on your ticket are they? You can hold as many as you like. I think
  3. There is some rubbish/potentially dangerous stuff on the net, but there is also some excellent data as well, for instance Hodgdon reloading data centre is my first port of call usually, but manuals do give information on stuff that is not always that obvious on the net, so they are a good tool in the reloaders armoury.
  4. I would be prepared to put a large amount of cash on the fact that mr Digweeds guns fit him
  5. Yes Jam1e the Howas are superb rifles but they don't do a .22 hornet, a 527 is the best choice, I take your point about the stocks, mine was the same but cured the problem with a comb raiser, the other option is an old Bsa, very good quality, a pal of mine has a 1950s one and it is a real tack driver, hornets don't pump enough powder down the barrel to burn them out so finding one with a good bore will not be a problem providing it has not been abused, if you did fancy an old one just make sure it is .224 bore size and not .223, although it tends to be the older American models that have this
  6. If I did not lamp I would not keep a bird, as I love my shooting as well, and what with having to earn a living I just could not do it without lamping, and all that direct pursuit flying from the glove does make for a very fit hawk, as it has to really pump its wings and try to stand any chance of catching.
  7. I love my Benneli, and would not swap it, I also love s/s I have quite a nice little Baikal 16g s/s hammer gun and it shoots really well,my least favourite guns are over and unders, I can certainly shoot them, but I just don't like them particularly, borrowed my mates Berreta on the pheasants last season and I must say I hit nearly everything I pointed it at, would I buy one? No its all about personal taste.
  8. It is very flat with the light fast loads, up to 150 ish then the heavier loads start to shine, I settled on the 45gn Sierra, it retained its energy longer and was flatter past 150 than the 35gn vmax, yes crimping is a must, and also flaring the case neck, if you do both of these operations you will have cloverleaf groups, trust me.
  9. No problem mate, it can all be rather confusing, might be worth putting a .22 rf down as well mate for the bunnies, save you some cash if you want one at a later date.
  10. Assuming you don't already have .22 hornet on your ticket, you will need a variation for the calibre, but to be honest, why bother, I cant for the life of me see it being accurate, headspace issues and all kinds of gremlins spring to mind, just use your .223 and forget it would be my take on it pal.
  11. Yes as said you can have a .243 as a first rifle, but nobody seems to have pointed out to you that your licensing dept will probably put a mentoring clause on your certificate, as you have no experience (or very little in their eyes) with a cf rifle, but it is not the end of the world, get out shooting with whoever mentors you gain some experience and get it removed, it will also help if you can get a covering letter from a person or people who you shoot with and use that calibre or above, get them to support you and say thay deem you suitable, and have been out shooting with them, good luck mat
  12. Well I never? Dee Da Lesbian Less of the de da
  13. Nice one dude, no I dont blame you pal rather see her go to a good hunting home, fair play to you mate, but it does get easier suprisingly quickly mate, I mean look at me I got a 5 month old and a two and a half year old at home, and Im getting a friggin redtail lol, so imagine if I am spending hours under trees waiting, you will find a way mate Im sure
  14. Well whatever happens your life will never be the same again once the bambino is born,I am on my third now and they are great, wish you and the missus all the best, hope you sort it out pal,and don't forget I am still coming down to see if we can get a bambi or two for the freezer
  15. Well it just so happens I am a raving lesbian, but I happen to be trapped in a mans body seriously though, my little quip was made in response to the OP comments, being personal is not really the way forward when he has only just joined the site, (or at all) and if he cant take a bit of constructive criticism/banter without resorting to swearing and making silly statements then I don't forsee too bright a future, as he is bound to come up against some more at some point as have we all.
  16. Never bothered trying to load the longer bullets, as I found the Sierra bullets did all I needed and more, but having experimented I would say crimping the bullets is almost essential,as is flaring the case neck to ensure the bullets seat with minimum runout, and I found Lee collet dies produced the most accurate loads, as I do incedently with the .243.
  17. Its not easy pal I will tell you that, but I managed it, until the bas---ds in my last job changed my shifts, then I let the last bird go as even lamping was out with me getting back at 10pm at night, but you have got a few months to mull it over, don't do anything hasty and regret it, hope you can find a way to carry on pal, be a real shame after the work you put in.
  18. How do you know I am not gay, and don't have a missus? you wont last five minutes on here pal if you cant take a bit of ribbing, especially asking for permission from members after a few posts, settle down lad and don't start calling people pricks, its easy on a computer, you might get somewhere if you last long enough.
  19. And people who have just joined the site expecting people to give them permission on their land usually get nothing as well, but its worth a try I guess, so if anyone has any deerstalking (with salmon fishing included) to let me have I would be grateful to hear from you oh and accommodation would be nice too, and not too far away either, thanks.
  20. Well it is not faster than the hornet using 35grn vmax bullets, as a load of 12.3 grains of H110 will give 3050 fps from a 22" barrel, and that is with a 35gn bullet, not a puny 20 gn and believe me I can load a 45gn hornet bullet up way beyond 2337 fps at 50 yards, another fad cartridge that has not been tested in the field, unlike the hornet that has been around in one guise or another since the end of the nineteenth century, however I must stress that handloading the hornet is essential, as factory ammo as quoted in the above figures is rather pedestrian (with the exeption of Hornady 35gn vm
  21. Good luck, quite extraordinary after nine posts must be one of the best for a while
  22. I have called them and they have come across the field like a bloody lurcher, and I have had to shoot to stop it running into my legs, those times you think to yourself I wish I had brought the shotgun instead of the rifle but of course, take the shotgun next time and they will all be skulking 150 yards away
  23. Get the hornet mate, there is no comparison, I have shot at the same targets as my mate with his hmr in a breeze and the difference is staggering, apart from not being deer legal, the hornet will do everything you want it to from crows to foxes, and as a general carry round rifle it is perfect, handload and 200 yard foxes are dead, and if you shoot the odd bunny you are not breaking the bank, one word about reloading the hornet, get the Lee universal case flaring die, and the factory crimp die, cost of both about 20 quid, gently flare the case neck to accept the flat based bullet, then a modera
