  1. If I could go back in time with them then it would be 4 inch gins every time for me - I would go and see them made, talk to the trap makers and bring the knowledge back with me OTC do you not think ,that they would prefer your knowlledge ,after all theres a fair bit of work involved in setting a gin for rabbits as opposed to a modern leg hold, weight ,and bulk would come into it as well. Its not what you want otc,its about what they would chose given the choice, and why.
  2. Given the choice, and the laws of the time, what type of rabbit trap would the old timers opt for today, would it be the gin ,fenn, imbra, the new Aussie leg hold ,or something else.
  3. Skeggys ok if you dont mind dog shit ,try wells on sea the other side of the wash, its clean ,safe ,and a good base for touring, got a phone number for some nice digs in Snettersham ,somewhere.
  4. I have been catching a few rabbits on a rail track close to me and have been lucky enough to sell them in bulk to a fellah for a deuce apiece [gutted ]my eldest lad had the rest for his pub,f--k all [dressed]when i dressed them i found 17 does were in pup, and one doe was nursing,a few of the bucks had there coats glued on as well, it seems to have come early this year, though if this cold snap continues it might knock them back abit. The fields near the track are set with rape and are covered in good runs so when the frosts lift i am hopeing to get some wires down, anybody else catching does th
  5. can anyone give me any idea as to [via PM]what went on ,as i have a couple things to ask about,or ,have they allready been asked?
  6. well as you know i run about 100 bg,s at a time in certain situations and find that tho they work in burrow mouths they are not as good as fenns , for other situations like under fences , thru cover etc , they are far better that fenns, i wouldn,t waste my time and effort setting them if i didn,t think they worked better , e.cook , you should give them a try , you might just change your mind Hi Moley, i have tried and tested BGs in place of Fenn traps on numerous occasions, at one point running just under 200 at a time and i didnt get as good results as with the Fenn traps i was using
  7. A tea leaf in the north east ?your kidding, whats his name then
  8. thats right, but theres times ,and places when you want that rabbit dead, not dancing around on a wire.Places near me you cannot lift a snared rabbit because the foxs or badgers get them, there much safer in a trap. I live in quorn country foxs are like grouse ,or unicorns, touch one and your off

  10. I like BGs,i have some pocket poppers set along a railway fence ,and some set in a stone embankment alongside a motorway, once they have weathered in there deadly ,though some will catch from day one ,inow put the trap in the cubby after a week ,then its just a matter of lifting dead rabbits, young rabbits are problem in the spring so i open the trigger wires, and hard set the trap, that way the small kits will get through ,but the bigger stuff will not, these traps are not everyones cup of tea but with a bit of groundwork they work very well. For rabbits i dont personally think a BG can do

  12. I shot a rabbit with my yackers when iwas a kid ,for a couple of hours iwas top dog, then spud taylor spanked a cock pheasant that was roosting in a hedgemeat bush ,and my moment of glory was over,.
  13. I visit two places where these traps are set out a 100+ a time ,allthough i am not big fan of these traps they do work given time ,however i think that other methods are better on farmed land. The two men who use the traps allways bait with carrot, though they like to set them in straight lines for inspection etc ,they both say you will get better results if they are set in a semi circle , like a D [ the upright I being the headland.]These chaps work there traps all year round and know what they are doing ,but as i said ,there not for me and theft is allways a problem.
  14. I have had this happen twice, once at Kettering and again at Boston, both times the circumstances were exactly the same,it was early Febuary, recent snowfall had melted, the sets ,though big were quite shallow ,and we had bolted stoats, both woods were ace spots that we tackled after the shooting finished.I had done these woods for years and allways looked forwards to it,the sets looked perfect ,fresh channels dug in the soil up to the holes, bare ground around the holes covered in fresh shit and flecks of fur,and completely undisturbed, weferreted the woods picking up ones and twos, but nothing lif
  15. I catch a few rabbits in fenns ,and BGs,over the season i usally pick few oddments like rats ,stoats ferrets ,mink, and a couple of weeks back a brace of maggies .The 1 mink i caught in a fenn6 was still alive,as were all of the ferrets i have caught in them,i have caught two mink, a cat [feral]and ferrets in the BGs,and there allways dead.Allthough the fen6 kills adult rabbits OK if set right, ithink it is underpowered for mink or ferrets, but saying that, if they had more spring tension i would not be able to open one, and they would have to beef the frame up to stop distortion with the extra
  16. Aye strange right enough. Do you think it just looked like ground with it being frozen. No,just ice 1/2 inch thick and clean ,the ice is only here overnight as the canal has a lot of traffic on during the day and cannot form, The canal is part of the Foxton inclined plane and is higher than the surrounding land and freezes over very quickly,
  17. While i was out this morning checking a few rabbit traps ,i saw the land owner out on her hoss with her dogs, one of the dogs put a hare upwhich ran towards me ,when it was about ten yards away it spotted me and took a sharp left straight over the canal which fozen over,i have bolted rabbits that have ran over a frozen pond ,but that had been frozen for weeks, the ice on the canal was more of an over night thing, the hare was not being chasedit went straight over as if it had been doing it for years.
  18. Mines the same day,and you will get nowt , its to near to xmas, thats what my pa used to say, used to get F.A. at xmas as well.
  19. I dont think that rabbit died in that contraption,it would have taken the wire around ONE of the frames legs at least and probably one of its own as well,Next time you rig up a posed snap shot, try to roughen the ground around the snare, get a bit of mud on the rabbit, try to make it look there has been a bit of struggle at least. The only person you are fooling with pictures like that is yourself, AND I DONT THINK THAT WOULD VERY HARD TO DO mud on rabbit ground rought up might be hard as the area is highlands and it is frozen. and there is not enought lenght for the rabbit to tangle rou

  21. Dont try dont get , and i wish you luck for your efforts, but you would be better off using the proper hoops that are cheap to make, light, flexable, and above all tried and tested by older hands who may be a little more expierenced than your self. Micky the whole idea of this is not to be light and flexible. Ive looked at the other designs. What Im doing is several reasons. main one is it cant be budged only movement is upwards. (this is to stop cattle kicking it over. or a small dog running being caught. the next reason is I want to be able to barcode these for recording purpose(as the ne

  23. They never tire or need feeding do they,do you use a setter for the body grips?i have to ,is there a setter for fenns, there ought to be.theres a lot of gorse near me and ifind a BG on a stand 4 inch high is deadly ,i seem to do better with them in the air as they have to hop through ,makeing them more committed than they would be if they were just creeping through the run and the trap was on the ground .Where i live is overrun with badgers and foxs ,so its a race to get there first ,i find that rabbits are safer in a trap than a snare, ive not worked out yet, if its because there dead, or the
