Tomorrow me, my Patt terrier (who nearly killed a hill sheep this afternoon) and the Pac collar are going for a little walk ....... I'll let you know how we get on. She nearly got one today and got a beating for it and is confined to quarters. A few months ago, she chased a ram into the hill for about 1/2 a mile while he would attack her and tumble her down the hill. Luckily this one had no horns otherwise he could've killed her. She thought it was great sport and we couldn't get near her. When she came home eventually a few hours later, having done no damage or received any, she has

Thinks: I wonder if that would work with men? -

Set yourself up to succeed - my motto I have a scrounging stealing lurcher, 2 Patts and 2 cats (one who was feral and goes through bin bags even at Xmas with paper in it in case we left a rogue lamb chop). So that is the situation and there is no way on God's earth they eat my food. 1. If I am leaving food out, I hide it. In a cold unused oven (if it is cold meat), back in the fridge, or with a lid on. 2. All the chairs are up against the table so there is no way to jump onto a chair and onto the table, though cats can leap from the ground. 3. If I am laying the table, then I -
Not sure I would feel comfortable about starving an 11 week old puppy for 24 hours. I would starve for 12 hours, then offer small dish of white boiled in its own water starchy rice and chicken breast (no skin or fatty bits). I would then feed the puppy little and often (ie three small meals a day of same thing). Is the dog off its food at all? I would lose the biscuits too. Has the dog been on any antibiotics? Is his gut flora/fauna out of balance? If so, yakult is a good one. If this goes on, I would go to the vet as it could be enteritis and need treatment.

You are not alone! A friend used one on her labrador. We live in a very prolific sheep area and she had to resort, having paid farmers off with bottles of whiskey, to a Pac collar. It worked on this dog, fine. It is, with all things, on how you use it. I would talk to someone who has had first hand success with this type of training and best of luck.

Some dogs are more vocal than others. Some do it for attention, some just chat as they go. Do you think it is truely attention seeking or just a reflex that he has. I have a Patt (and a cat) who just are very vocal - nothing to do with people or surroundings, they just "chat" as they go about their daily lives! If it is obviously attention seeking and you have checked he is happy and everything is fit and well, I would try clicker training him. This is a great way for dealing with attention seeking animals. Clicker training is not easy and you would be well advised to get a book or in

Drontal information Depending on what type of Drontal you used, he might have tapeworm (white bits in poo could be segments?). Different wormers do different worms. Also animals from different areas bring different infestations too (well, they do in horses, that's for sure!). I would use a broad spectrum wormer coz you may not have nuked everything or take a sample of his poo down to the vet for analysis. Good luck.

Don't take the piss - it works! Tried it on a horse who had a terrible involvement with a cattle grid. The wounds were horrific. We used manuka honey and it made alot of difference. I thoroughly recommend it. Use it topically on a dressing and change it daily. Manuka Honey Dressing on YouTube

Vaccinating your own dogs.....
Pignut replied to RatSnatcher's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
My dogs (and cats!) had the initial jag and then booster. As they never go to kennels, never travel anywhere and stay at home (200 acres) - they don't go to shows. We don't bother. But we are in Shetland so I don't know what the prevalence of all these diseases are around here. Few dogs come on the premises either. I do know, however, that no kennels will touch them if you want to go on holiday. -
That's not a bad price for alot of microsurgery at many different layers including probably repair of ligaments/tendons, etc. plus drain and everything else My dog sliced his leg almost off (jumping out of the back of the Land Rover) down the bone and his bill was more like twice that and that was 6 years ago. BTW, I sued Land Rover and we settled out of Court (different story!). But £267 for that kind of surgery is not bad from what I can see of the injury How long was the dog under for? My dog was under for 3 hours for hard-work, stitching so many different bits and layers back t

Linseed (you can buy it in health food shops or even some supermarkets - Tesco). Add it to the food and it adds masses of fibre to the diet. Almost tasteless and actually very palitable. Keep an eye that your dog isn't just pooing - maybe a visit to the vets. A blockage would worry me and may require surgery.

Glad you got some answers. Always worrying when your dogs don't eat! (well, I worry as mine are gannets!). Good luck.

Oh f**k, I hate the stuff. You start thinking your dog must be made of wet tissue paper (well mine must be!) when they come back from nearly every walk cut up. That is one horrible cut. I have loads of land and have got rid of every inch of barbed wire. Can't stand it for the horses either - does far too much damage. Disgusting invention.

My old lurcher has a sort of collection of lumps almost like a chestnut on a horse's leg. It is a group of hard warty things and the vet said not to worry. He is old and getting single warts too.

Yes, thank you. She rules the world (well, her world!). Fur fine, skin fine. When prone to scratching, she gets done for fleas, when she scootches on her bum, she gets done for worms and anal glands. Treats us like a hotel and spends most of her life outside in the hill hunting bunnies, coming home for meals and a warm fire at night. Obviously deaf (or selective hearing), can imitate a lump of peat from 100yds without moving and is only going in your direction, not because you called and are purple in the face, but because she happened to be going in that direction, anyway! Many years ago, I went to look at the dogs at Battersea Dogs Home. None of them caught my eye and I asked about the ones "not for sale", so to speak, as my friend was the vet there. They led me round the back to see a row of ill/ready to be pts dogs and I saw my dog, Sally - probably Bedlington/Whippet neutered female with sarcoptic mange was the description. I immediately convinced the staff to let me have her and went to see a homeopathic vet. He gave her some pillules and put her on a diet of lamb mince (you can buy it fairly cheap in the freezer section of supermarkets) and white ri

My Patt pup arrived with swollen eyes, itching while she walked and I took her to the vet. After the routine skin scrapes, demodectic mange was diagnosed (I saw the slide under the microscope - it was fascinating). Anyway, pup was prescribed some severe bath stuff (OP petrol stinking dip) that you put in a bucket, dunked her in and then she had to dry off on her own. It was horrible and she minded so much and was very uncomfortable and miserable. She had to have this bath twice a week too. I was beginning to see her dreading me coming near her and resenting me (not a very good sta

I popped by the other day - FORUM SHUT DOWN FOREVER was the message, I think. Now it is open - Happy Days. Now folk are trying to leave - wtf is that about? Can someone explain some of the politics - us, plebs at the bottom have no idea what is going on. I like this forum. It is a help to me and my dogs. It is nice to know that the majority of contributors are like-minded folk too. Am I missing something here? So, in the words of Tony-irritating-Robinson on C4's Time Team "what is going on?"

Next time you come up here, give me a pm! I'm on the Westside of the main island and there are bunnies in their millions! Well done! Good haul. Pignut

Casting my mind briefly to a genetics class at school, I cannot see how the original bitch dalmation would be able to subsequently produce any eggs for fertilization for mating with another dalmation that were "tainted" from a previous mating. It just doesn't work that way, does it?

Next time, and now you've had experience, please don't take 3 days to find out that your dog has broken it's foot. How would you like it? But well done you for getting the dog to the vet, eventually.

Just noticed that they do Gift Certificates ! Well, that solves my Chrimbo prezzie list.
-
do they live in or out? If they live out, I would spray it with purple spray. If in, I would just keep it clean by bathing it in warm water. Good luck. These things happen and if you keep it clean and dry, they usually heal quickly with no problem. Pignut.

My lurcher (colliexwhippetxgreyhound - related to Plummer's Merle) is slowing down. Aged 12, neutered years ago, he is suffering from mini-strokes and on a regular dose of Vivatonin. The pills seem to have helped his "vague phases" and general well-being. He is now maintaining his weight (approx 20kg) and doing as much running around as his body dictates - daily walks and catching rabbits still. Today, he went out for his usual walk (1 hour) with the terriers and on the way home, sat down to rest for 5 minutes before he could continue. He was panting but not excessively, he appeared ex
