  1. Yes, I use mine principally for recall. Where I live (see photos) the wind blows constantly and both Patts feign complete deafness either real or not when they are off hunting on dog walks. The wind blowing in the opposite direction can render anyone deaf within a few yards. We did a human experiment and realised that you literally cannot hear anything a few yards away when the wind gets going! So, yes, mine is for recall. I have it on "doorbell" mode, ie it is set to just beep without a zap and when I call them without a result, then I beep them and they both come running. When I fir
  2. She is still a baby. I would concentrate on just going out with her on a long line lead and let her watch the other one. Keep training short and sweet, end on a good note and not a thrashing! If you let her off the lead, it is for short training times, ie let her off, call her back and reward her. Keep walks slow and her interested in you. Don't start to work her until you have her concentration. Few dogs, especially lurchers are stupid. Look at your body language, your tone of voice. Try calling her back with an upbeat high enthusiastic voice (pretend if you have to). Keep biccies in
  3. I have used one (stands up!) It has cured my two Patts from wandering and one from chasing sheep. She was getting very bad and disobedient to the point of taking absolutely no damn notice. It has worked brilliantly. I can now take my dogs for walk in open hill surrounded by sheep whilst riding my horse. My perfect scenario. They can chase rabbits but are easily called off, they are obedient and life has changed so much. I want my dogs to work when they are asked to, not go buggering off for days on end so that you are sick with worry about whether the local farmer will shoot them
  4. Our butcher charges £1 for 1kg of minced dog food. I wish he didn't mince it but it is frozen. Bones are free, though. It is also local meat. We do not have any choice - there are only 2 butchers and the other doesn't know where his meat comes from so I don't use him.
  5. We have the Mountain hare up in Shetland. They call it salt and pepper when their coat is both colours. My now-retired lurcher used to come home with them sometimes. I must admit to thinking they are off limits as they are so beautiful and no problem on our islands. Now rabbits are a huge problem and I encourage any dog to get them.
  6. I am one of the 98%. That is so wierd. It was 100% spot on! How do they do that?
  7. Sadly going on far too often in the horse world these days. Foals lifted out of fields, only to be thrown in hedges a few days later when they fail to thrive without their mum. A real waste and the lowlife scum who do this should be shot.
  8. I am working with a Norwegian film crew at the moment supplying animals. I am this ("") close to asking if they have the word "please" in their language because all they do is order us about as rudely as possible. They order you where to go as if life depended on it, then wait an hour while they get set up and then realise that wild animals tend to drift off unless they are ready immediately. It has taken them a day to work this out! Rude, arrogant, rude, arrogant, and rude they all are, bar one who may have smiled. Today I am taking my own horse to scare them into submission, a few
  9. Please go to http://www.shetland-pony.com/news/2009/stolen/poster.jpg and print off this poster and put it up everywhere you can think of like supermarkets, anywhere the general public might see it. These are two unweaned foals from this year who have been stolen from their mothers plus another filly. Imagine your precious and loved little puppy/kitten/foal away from its mother. It doesn't bear thinking about so please help to get everyone on the lookout for these two babes who need their mums desparately. Many, many thanks Pignut If you cannot get the link to work,
  10. IMHO it hasn't started a major argument has it? It has started a discussion and perhaps made folk abit more aware of what is going on behind their backs in the name of the Patterdale terrier.
  11. SJM, don't you be too certain. Where do you think that petition came from? There are alot of pet owners out there who wuv their ickle baby Patterdale who would love to see the poor blighters conform to all the UK Kennel Club have to offer, ie breed standard, recognition and thus status for dog-owners to whom this kind of thing is important. To many it is not about breedlines or workability but the showing world and all the glitz that has to offer. Not everyone hunts or works with theirs - a lot are pets and only that with a huge fluffy bunny fan club.
  12. I would draw your attention to this:- http://www.gopetition.co.uk/petitions/patt...le-terrier.html Scary stuff if you ask me.
  13. Should the Patterdale Terrier be recognised by the UK Kennel Club? What do you think? Considering this breed has so many variations for the specific hunting work required over many years, what happens if the UK Kennel Club get their hands on this breed and require a Breed Standard? Is this right? Also, considering what has happened to many of the recognised breeds, such as the ataxic GSD, what could happen to the Patterdale gene pool? Cheers Pignut
  14. I have known dogs, once thrown in, instantly out of their depth or feet touching the ground, hate water forever more. Won't go near it, in it or by it. I would slowly introduce the dog to water. I would walk him through puddles on a lead. Don't make a big deal of it because he is just walking with you nicely with good manners - all part of an overall training. Then, if he is not tip-toeing through or trying to go round, do the fetch game near a calm quiet pond. Introduce another dog that likes to swim and fetch and off you go! My bitch patt oftens takes herself off for a few laps
  15. Are you wanting him to swim or just be used to puddles and generally getting wet? If you want him to like swimming, although it is up to him, I would start teaching him retrieval games and take another dog who already swims to a loch or pond (they can get abit frightened of the sea and the waves). Just play games, throwing the toy around the place, getting him to bring it back, or letting the other dog bring it back. Make it a fun competition. Then throw the toy into the water and he will see the other dog go in and probably follow and off he will swim, if he likes that sort of thing.
  16. Assuming it is cooked beef mince, about 24g of protein / 100g serving Protein Chart! If it is mincemeat that you put in mince pies, then I would think it would be abit different
  17. Colliex eyes! Good luck with whatever your choices. This lad was not easy to start with but it was discipline and limits he lacked in his life. Once he knew the score, and where he stood in the pack, he was comfortable and settled down to be a great dog.
  18. Thank you. The Arctic Hare is also known as the Mountain Hare.
  19. and he/she let me get so close. My clothes weren't quite the same afterwards after crawling up a boggy hill so he couldn't see or smell me! I felt honoured and thank the gods for a good zoom lens. It was raining btw too. A rare sight these days but it was worth it 100%. These are the shots I dream of.
  20. What about introducing ball throwing games into the dog walk too, getting him to retrieve and bring back. I have just had a major back operation but I take my dogs out, though it is a much slower walk and probably not as long as 2 hours, so I take my hat off to you. My colliexgreyhoundxwhippet lurcher was easy to train to retrieve the ball. So if you are near a hill, you just throw the ball down it and keep walking and the dog will run down, run back up and bring you back the ball. Lots of his energy being used up and being taught a useful skill too. You will also find that once h
  21. I, too, am wondering phantom pregnancy. My bitch (Patt) had her first season and was awful. Her behaviour went back to Step - resentful, disobedient and bad mannered. So I made the decision to get her spayed (other reasons too - demodectic mange as a pup) so she instantly had a phantom pregnancy before the op and was worse. Depressed, miserable, cringeing cur about everything. Check your bitch's teats for milk. See if she is "nesting" - mine had a litter of tissues and took everything to her bed. I think mine ended up having pills to stop the milk and the minute she was out
