A question for you mate.......conflicts since WW2 that we and the Americans have been involved with (not counting Vietnam as that was a long conflict ) have been on the whole small scale and micro managed. You have to adhere to every rule and law because the conflict just isn’t large enough for anyone to get lost in the general melee......all eyes are on you all the time. There’s a massive development near where I used to live called Chafford Hundred........they built really lovely houses there, blinding houses and it was a nice little community. THEN.......Newham began shipping its population out with a mortgage handout to the tune of 25% so that it could sell the land to developers. The place is a piss hole now, the locals call it “Chaffrica” 10 years was all it took......10 years and that area and the surrounding areas just went down the toilet. they are building another 24 thousand......10 years of that and another 24 thousand on the way

Some stories translate better to audio or film........and some never translate well to other media. All quiet on the western front is a classic case.......the book pisses all over the cinematic version. Lord Of the rings is another, you could not possibly hope to do a literary work so vast and complicated justice on film......they just wouldn’t have the budget for it. I think you read what resonates with you, if a book don’t grab me in the first 3 or 4 pages I won’t persist. It has to take flight off of the page and let me see, hear and feel it in my mind or I can’t read it. Steven King is a prime example, probably the worlds best selling author and no doubt technically a master of his craft......but I couldn’t read one of his books if you paid me and god knows I have tried to get past page 3 !! No, fair one....I wasn’t there so it only an opinion from afar and not very informed. I will say this though, the acts you mention are little different to burning phosphorous melting through a child’s back imho.......point being, we can all as humans be obscenely savage if we can make a justifiable excuse to our selves. As I say, I don’t in the least bit condone it but I can understand how a people can get to a point of savagery...........has always happened and always will.

Out of interest, I wonder what any of the fathers of those girls systematically gang raped in the north of England would do if you stuck the communities their abusers come from in a field and gave them an arsenal of weapons and carte Blanche to do as they wish ??
