  1. ive known 2 greyhound bitches the first was never raced and was as good a hunting dog on open ground as any. the second an exracer that was given the time to become a normal dog before she was hunted she was mostly used over the ferrets and was exerlent for the task . both these bitches were breed to deerhounds and produced exerlent off spring. however if you haver the open ground they are quite good but they do have thin skin and light bone. in the early days of the colony they wetre breed to deerhound and some times smooth collie this produced a dog suited for the large game and harsh scrub
  2. as we know you use dogs to hunt foxes if its caught its dead . if its not its un harmed theres know half way weather hound, terrier or long dog.
  3. Well said stevemac ,your obviously a hounds man like myself ,love my bloodhound and the few beagles we run but can see that having the harrier in some part that we are allowed to hunt will be a advantage You use hounds yourself ???? Hi aussiesamba I was a houndsman for a long time but not any more scince my situation changed . I still have a very large soft spot for scenthounds and love to watch and listen to them work. foxhounds were my hound of choise but have hunted beagles and bassets as well. good luck with your harriers hope they prove just right for you.
  4. no coyotee hunter they are not allowed to catch the deer just drive it to the guns. simular to the way it is done in europe. the samba are hunted by droping the hounds on a freash scent or wallow letting work it up i so doing pushing the deer to a line of hunters that have been planted in various vantage points to despatch the deer. most of this is done in very mountainous rugged terain the drive and athletic ability was fantastic the bloodhounds and beagles not as good though a lot has been done to breed them more for the purpose the harier is seen a compromise betwween the 2.
  5. Mate I feed dry food mostly for convence sake busy life and all that. How ever I make sure they get goodbones a couple of times a week and not that I hunt rabbit or hare much but they always get it when I do sure the bone keeps the teeth in good order and cheap as chips from the butcher.
  6. fell hounds have been used on the samba and other packs however they were caught up in the foxhound ban, It was beleived by the authorites that the slower breeds ie bloodhound and beagle would not be able to catch and maul the deer. Foxhounds had been breed for the task for many years and were exerlent, unfortunately a pack was a little too good and caught a deer in front of the wrong people this went to the papers which bought on the ban. The regulations have now been relaxed to the point where some other breeds have been allowed harier being one of them. Truth be known all the deer houndsma
  7. All the above comments above while being a little harsh are true and to the point. all dogs are pack animals and every pack needs a leaded and if you do not make it you the dog will make it them. At the moment the dog isnt conditioned to the cold and acts like a pussy when out so you will let it back in trhe warm theres only one way to get conditioned to the cold and thats to be out in it. So man up take control of the situation get it a warm kennel and stick the dog out side .after a week or two you can give it a small treat if you want and let it back in for a short while half hour maybe. it
  8. Hi Gleninnes nice pup you have there . By the way is your handle Gleninnes because thats where your living.
  9. No point in giving a dog anti biotics when it doesn't need them ... I'd get some Manuka honey on it , ive seen first hand what it can do (on a person) it's bloody good stuff wound looks in flamed and swollen to me most likly why stiches pulled they wont hurt either. Ive the honey do ok as well but remember we developed antibiodics because we wanted a better job than the old remides could do. the seceret which is no seceret at is to make sure you give a full cause and dont be a tight arse.
  10. If you want to persist with this lamp then you will have to change the distance the element is from the lense the black spot will be caused by the shape of the reflector. varring the hight of the element can change the the shape and sharpness of the light thrown . myself though Id go with a gree torch I have one of there head lamps and very happy.
  11. Get him on some anti biodics and just keep washing down with salty water than and some bedadene ie iodine. nasty wound and a hack job on the stiches.
  12. Always get a chuckle when Poms start talking about pig hunting. I grew up with it and still go every now on the My son just walked back in from a weekend catching pigs here in aus we use just about any type of dog or x . theres those that like there meat heads and some big dogs do well but usually knock up to quick. theres those that like smaller dogs like bully cattle dogs but they can be to slow in some areas. we use bully staghound types the same dogs I catch foxes with all season. One out on big pigs is for blokes with little dicks and need the dog to prove there manhood a pigs got 2 ears
  13. We hunt rabbits hares foxes and feral pigs with the same dogs we blend the breeds to let us do that theres 4 in my yard that do the job. As was said different strokes for different folks.
  14. Hmm pur breed they are mostly to big for most game yet they have a great nose and breed down in size are very handy in a pigdog. Many a foxdog over her also have got wolfhound in their blood I have a bitch that is 29 to the shoulder her make up is Sire kangaroodog(old line of wolfhound xgreyhound x deerhound dam deerhoundxgreyhound she is she is a good strong dog good speed and plenty of nose for anything we hunt.
  15. ant chance the owner is the problem not the dog?
  16. to answer the question on dog agression with this x Ive run my dogs with Ausmicks dogs and there was never any trouble between them in the feild or on the truck in the box. they are the real deal when they come to bigger game agreed if I only had rats and rabbits to hunt Id be looking at whippet xs. Horses for courses. Ive also owned pur ridgebacks for 33yrs I would only continplate some that I have owned for a x just like any other breed. Maybe bull xs work more oftern because bulldogs are agressive and dumb enough to stick there head in anywhere. thankfully ridgebacks just dont look tough en
  17. Ty I get this ever now and then as I pay the morgage I have no trouble replying that she can pack he bags when ever she likes. They soon lose the fight out of their argument when they realise you do give shit if the stay or go.
  18. well back to the topic CP I have a 29" stag catches rabits to feral pigs, 28.5 catches rabbits to feral pigs , 27.5" deerhound /greyhound takes rats to feral pigs, 24" stag x bitch takes rabbits to feral pigs and a 21" whippet takes rats to fox and will swing of a pig with help so about the only difference I can see the small dogs do little things a little easier and the bigger dogs do big things a lot easier.
  19. Slugs like damp dark conditions about oppisite that any dog would like light dry warm conditions would end the infestation.
  20. Well our season as it is will be drawing to a close soon Ive been carting my jack russell pup around with me all season as I fox hunt with my staghounds hes been ragging dead foxes for a while now, but just of late he has been entering briars and thickets hes 9mnths old now and while not doing a lot on the foxes hes doing enough to drag the stag dog in which pushes the foxes out.
  21. tough enough not to hard for a good dog though.
  22. depends oftern on avaible gane for them same as any other preditor out western nsw the dont get much bigger that the average tom. I do know some are big enough in other areas to become lamb killers and are a fare trophy. I had the pleasure of staying with nick and his familly last easter we hunted some of the properties he has permission on.
  23. different to any pig hunt ive been on. Them big greyhound x types might be worth having but the hoard of little dogs not sure why you would need them for unless they were doing the flushing from the cover and turned up in the end. The only time things go to shit when we pig hunt is if there are to many dogs pigs only got 2 ears you only need one dog for each.
  24. I have a bull stag bitch I'd love to put an airedale or foxhound over . She is an unbreakable little bitch that loves to hunt and catch a fox she lacks a little push in the real thick cover and perhaps a bit of pace out in the open relying on her drive to get a job done. perhaps a foxhoundxgreyhoud would suit her better. I've owned foxhounds and had a love/hate relationship with them, these foxhound lurchers seem just the go for the thick massive swamps we hunt.
