  1. About 7-8 years ago I was walking my wee dogs along the canal footpath. I came across 2 "lads" (ie brats) shooting at newly hatched ducklings across the cut with air rifles. I took the guns away from them and said that I was going to leave the guns at the police station. One of these little scumbags started mouthing off about "My dad . . ." Yer know the crack. I said that for a start his dad was well out of order letting him out with the gun unsupervised. Then it was illegal to shoot at baby ducklings. It is also illegal to shoot across a canal. If his dad wanted to collect the guns he was wel
  2. Agreed. In 2008 there were 2,538 people killed as a result of car accidents, so if they are going to ban anything then rifles/shotguns should not be topf of the list !! don,t want to put a spanner in the works like but all people seem to be bothered about on here is whats going to happen in future about licences.for f**k sake some folk here in whitehaven are getting or have had some devastating news.give some f****n respect........... You are right. There are loved ones dead. I apologise for my first reaction. We should share the grief of those who are left. Then, and only then, can
  3. We should be getting together NOW to get over the message that we aren't all loonies. If some nutter uses a car to kill people, does society ban private ownership of cars? We really need to be on the case with this. Ric
  4. What the . . . What the? It's bad enough pulling such a suicidally dumb trick but filming it? What a cunning stunt. Ric
  5. Likeable guy who knows one end of a gun from t'other. Has a slightly dodgy relationship with his ferrets, but who's perfect?

  6. As said, ask. If you never ask a girl to go to bed you'll die a virgin! Ric
  7. Have I got this right? You altered your head on a grindstone? And your accuracy suffered? Well f**k my boots. Ric
  8. Snipers blasting foxes on golf courses. Ric.
  9. The poor, the old, kids in care, the disabled. And you ain't seen nuffin yet. Osborne has a £4.2 million trust find to live on. Ric
  10. Aaron - Sorry if I gave offence. (I have managed to resist the temptation to say "Nothing latent about it" . . .!) I did say that the 5.56 was ideal for the fighting in 'Nam, for Belfast, Iraq and similar comparatively close combat. The article I read said that the 5.56 in general, and especially fired from the short barrelled M4, had been found to lack long range accuracy and lethality. It is outgunned by the old AK47 in 7.62 x 39. The British Army has 400 Sharpshooter rifles in 7.62 x 51, and the US Army is planning to designate 9 men in each infantry company as specialists with M110 rifles
  11. Apparently the American Army is testing that big rotary shotgun for use in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. If it works there, it will be deployed along the Mexican border. No more wetbacks any more . . . Just don't forget SGS. Me and Sundance are on our way. Butch
  12. You noticed! Actually John, we are both right. Honey bees are vitally important but so are beedle bums. Giro - will do. Ric
  13. John - DON'T SHOUT!.You are of course correct about the importance of honey bees, and yes they do indeed pollinate clover. But don't fall for the numbers argument. Despite their small numbers beedle bums play a very important role in the natural economy and if they were to die out the effects would be very serious for agriculture. It is the "knock-on effect," or as the Americans called it in the '60s the domino effect. Oh pooh. I am starting to come on like an eco-freak anti. Ric
  14. Paul - Thanks for that! Ironic ain't it. The British round was 7mm/.280". Now the Americans are taking up a round that is virtually the same. Ho hum. Larf? Or cry? Ric
  15. I've been asked to put this up, so here goes. Bumble bees, or beedle bums as I like to call them, are threatened by loss of their food plants due to monoculture agriculture and over use of sprays. The only plants which can fix nitrogen in the soil are the legumes, peas and beans, and clover. Yet all plants need nitrogen in the soil. The only insects which pollinate legumes are bumble bees. So we get no bumbles = no legumes = no plant growth = no crops = a lot of very hungry people. There were 16 species of bumbles in the UK. We have managed to drive one species extinct and they are all thr
  16. Honey bees are threatened by the varroa mite. They seem to be developing resistance to them so fingers crossed they may get through this. Beedle bums, as I used to call them, are threatened by general loss of their food plants. They are a "Keystone" species. I'm not going to get into all the details here, but basically if bumble bees die off we won't be far behind them. If you want the sordid details, pm me. Meantime keep planting the clover. Ric
  17. Ah come on pal. We're Brits! you expect efficiency? Dream on! Mind, I still reckon that the 7mm/.280 we entered for the first NATO trials would have been the dogs dodgy bits. Make a great hunting round as well with fragmenting bullets . . . Yeah, and if my grandma had balls she'd be me grandad. Ric
  18. Well . . . OK but! The 7.62x51 NATO round had a probability of 90% for a one round knockdown. The 5.56 requires 3 rounds to give the same probability of a knockdown. So a soldier carrying twice as many rounds of 5.56 as his oppo with 7.62 has 2/3rd the chance of a knockdown. Maths looks a bit dodgy to me. Anyway, there are other issues here. The M4 is a short barrelled version of the M16. As such, it has a maximum effective range of 300m. As I said above, the SA80 retains the longer barrel and has a maximum effective range of 450m. Nonetheless and eventhestill it seems to me that the 5.56
  19. According to the Times today the American forces are seriously considering replacing the 5.56 with a heavier round for long range combat. If you know about ballistic capability, it is soon clear that the M4 rifle has too short a barrel to allow full burning of the charge before the bullet exits the barrel. The SA80 bull-pup is inherently so short that it does not need a short barrel to fit inside an APC, so remains lethal to 450m. Mind you, the Taliban are still using .303 Lee-Enfields as long range sniper rifles. What goes around comes around! Ric.
  20. Seems a bit odd to me. You can burn an "enemy soldier" to death with napalm. You can disembowel him with a rifle grenade. You can tear him to bits with your tank tracks. You can smear him all over the landscape with a 60mm mortar. But you are not allowed to shoot him with a round designed to give a clean kill. Err . . . I have problems here. Anyway, back to my main point, 5.56 looks a bit underpowered for modern warfare. I reckon the 7.62x51 is on the way back. Bets anyone? Ric
  21. Did anyone else see the article about the US forces getting fed up with the 5.56? Apparently, in Afghanistan the US military are finding that the 5.56 round fired from the M4 rifle is pretty well useless as a military round. The M4 is a short barrelled version of the M16, and it has a maximum lethal range of 200 metres. Ironically, the British LA , with a longer barrel, is still up to the mark at 400-500m. Mind, the Brits always have at least one man in a squad with a 7.62 gimpy, and new troops are being equipped with a new 7.62 rifle. I have to laugh at this. In the first trials for a standa
  22. Just what I was thinking! PM your address, I'll stick a few in the post to you. If they work for you I can let you have 5,000 no problemo. No charge except postage, they're just gathering dust. Ric
  23. Rexel 73 any use? 9mm. I have loads. Ric
  24. The rules say "Flocking pigeons or corvids" damaging crops. Of course, the fuzz only follow the rules whan they feel like it . . . Ric
  25. You have used the best available method to achieve a humane dispatch. You are completely legal, and morally untouchable. If there had been someone available with a .243 then the responsible authorities would have contacted that person. In East Sussex, where I live, if you are allowed a variation for deer you are expected to be available for humane dispatch in the event of an animal being unjured in a road accident. Ric
