The "Right to Bear Arms," was enshrined in the American Constitution because the founders of the constitution, most notably Jefferson, Washington and Patrick Henry, were implacably opposed to the idea of a standing army. They considered that it was far better to have a self trained militia available for national defence. Since the same people were pushing West and needed guns for self-defence against the Native Americans who objected to the genocidal behaviour of the Europeans, the whole thing worked out rather well, at least for the invaders.
