I keep my dogs in leather collars all the time .. one reason i do it is because i have no other place to hang there id discs which i thought was a requirement

may be tape it up or tape over the slit well you could try it see if you can still hear the bell

I don't see why a bell cant be a useful addition with a collared up ferret .. only obvious things I can see rendering it useless is it becoming clogged up with dirt & not working properly

I can only speak on what I am witnessing up here but if you are lucky enough to see them rutting .. be very careful ... I witnessed a group of 4 hind's trample a dog on Wednesday last week .. they were relentless .. I have never witnessed anything like it before .. so choose your location carefully & they also have a knack of springing up anywhere .. I am this year treading very carefully as I have already heard a stag calling in the last week but not seen him as yet

click the link on my sig the BADA one .. it tells you everything you need to know about ticks & tick borne diseases the problem with ticks is if there not removed correctly & there infected they basically regurgitate right back into the host .. so if people get into the habit of removing them correctly from animals .. they will also do the same to themselves .. or other people BADA sell tick pickers as well so get them from there website as there a registered charity if you want to know just how devastating it can be to live with a tick borne disease ... look up the
