Sanctions have impacts at both ends of trade. They tend to be designed to impact one party more than the other, obviously. But none are harmless to all except the target. Still, it's probably better than setting about killing each other. Ha This really is one of the most globally unstable times we have seen for probably 40 years or more. The effects will be felt from top to bottom.

This is a reply to Wilf too, on the topic of Dresden. Dresden was controversial back even then, it was the reason bomber command was the black sheep of the military for so long afterwards. It was equivalent to a nuclear strike, it was strategic and massive and was unmistakeably intended to literally wipe out a chunk of German civilisation. But, I'd just caveat that with the fact that it was a different time. A time before the modern rules of war. A time when the enemy were the civilians of the other side. I actually think your arguments of EU/NATO expansion quite reasonable and hard to counter. I really don't think there needs to be anymore justification than that. I still think it's wrong and the West should counter but life's just nuanced like that.

I think you've found a crumb and reckon it's a smoking gun. The conspiracy claimed that Putin invaded Ukraine to strike and destroy 'biolabs' that were developing some sort of weapon right? I'm not at all surprised there are labs in Ukraine that are researching pathogens. As far as I'm aware, that's all that is actually proven? If Putin's objective was to strike Ukrainian labs developing biological weapons then he would've just said so. If he knew they existed then he would've absolutely broadcast it load and far.

Interesting! There are new upgraded F-16 variants still in development for tender so it's possible a deal could be struck for a new Polish batch of these, perhaps even with some manufacturing in Poland to sweeten it even more. Normally in such deals second hand stuff would be offered to fill the gap. I'm sure the yanks could find a couple squadrons of used F-16s to hand over, even the national guard have them!

Oooooooo interesting! Has it been verified? I know that EU mouthpiece went off script and then they had to backtrack but have they found a way to get it done? I think a lot of it had to do with what deal the Poles got for replacements and the US were likely the only player able to make that happen.

Tactically they are operating at night and at low altitude. That says two things to me, firstly they are scared of being seen by the radars of Ukrainian air defence missile systems so are flying low below the radar horizon. Unfortunately flying low puts them in range of the less capable but more easily hidden and dispersed stingers. Stingers don't use radar, they need the operator to visually target the aircraft, hence flying at night. The RAF have now deployed fifth generation stealth fighters to Eastern Europe. F-35s are a major chess piece, especially in an offensive strike capacity. Also, our escort warships seem to be operating at a heightened readiness with air defence missile tube covers off. They can shoot straight through the covers but I guess it saves replacing them?

I don't know what level of authority they are imposing on the people of Kherson. It's reported that they are in talks with the city government on how to maintain order and the troops can move without resistance through the city. I think it's recognised now by all sides as under occupation. There are unverified reports of soldiers raping women. I said to expect that so not surprised to be hearing it but equally such reports would be a powerful motivator for those still fighting and those in Kherson who may be beginning an insurgency.
