Seeing as im usually last to try anything new, finally went and ordered a couple of yankee traplines!Banged them in on a good run, checked the next day,and hey presto !,old moley was nailed.First time too,(im slightly chuffed, ho-ho)I will try them out a few more times though, before i order anymore,in case it was just beginners luck !Initial impressions are it seems like a good wee trap, with a humane kill to boot.Goodness me, im still learning after all this time !

Seeing as im well up north, and over the past few days in particular, the dreaded midges are once again on the attack.Im partial to a bit of moleing after tea, this time of year.I forgot my midge head net the other evening,(and boy did i pay the price ! ) and got eaten alive !! he-he.Got the hell outa there, and ran home.Never been so glad to get back in the motor. Is it true you boys further down south, dont suffer this problem to the same extent ?

Trap performance of the trapline mole trap
earth-thrower replied to earth-thrower's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Cheers guys, and thanks for the tips, about situations where these traps can be applied. My brother who is in the states, sent me some No-mol traps, must have been about ten year ago now.I remember trying them out a couple of times, just for the novelty, and they did catch.I felt it was quite a strong trap, considering the design of it.I didnt set it according to the instructions though,i remember bunging just one in on a feed run, gambling on the mole coming out to feed or work, rather than returning back.I never anchored them with the canes either,i just replaced the cut out turf, back on top. -
Mole traps filled with soil
earth-thrower replied to Plank's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
All molecatchers have experienced this sort of thing at one time or another.(and not just with duffus traps ! LOL)You learn how to avoid this sort of outcome,or at least keep it to an absolute minimum.Im pretty sure also that others have offered advice on this query before,so my advice would be to SEARCH for previous posts. -
Yes Chalkwarren i agree. When the molecatcher engages in conversation about the mole and its habits with an interested customer, they then have a better understanding of what to expect, at the end of a mole trapping programme. It also makes for a better working relationship, this ensures you will be contacted again (without hesitation), if your services are required in the future.

Really, mines are over sixteen now, and i still wouldnt be comfortable with them handling a barrel or talpex ! LOL.Clearing the moles on the STONY ground Im currently on at the moment, aint no ' doddle ' either.

there was no need to dispatch her so she was let to run, I would have done the same in similar circumstances.
-
Did you release or dispatch the fox ?

talpa or talpax any preference?
earth-thrower replied to tegater's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
" I run several hundred Talpa traps " 'Stop showing me up' ,Chalkwarren ! well seeing ,im still a foot soldier mind.he-he-he.Seriously though,i also share your enthusiasm for this 'Style' of trap.Funny ,as im replying to you,im starting to feel 'nostalgic' about my old Fenn scissors as well ! LOL. -
talpa or talpax any preference?
earth-thrower replied to tegater's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I use the Talpex (genuine).I havent tried the 'Talpa',but i understand from others, that it can also be effective against moles.Ive learned since handling the talpex, that it has a stronger spring than any other mole trap,i have used. This is no bad thing, because if you place them CORRECTLY in a mole run,its then a swift demise for old moley.I also taught myself how to set the trap itself, with the minimum of effort.(this is easier said than done, when you first handle one!) Im also grateful to a wise old owl who goes by the name of ' ROLFE ' . His method of installing the trap, produces great resul -

Er, um... a combination of too much sun,and a few shandys for me yesterday.Look at the result ! LOL -
Just look at the amount of interest the 'Molecatchers Prices' topic has attracted.Goodness me.Shouldnt be too surprised though, its probably the 'Molecatchers registers' (how to become a professional molecatcher in a day !) growing army of EXPERTS, all having a gander. he-he.In fact, me old mums now interested in the moles.I will send her down,(with the fee) for the top notch training.LOL,im sure theyll be there ,welcoming her with open arms.I will sharpen the end of her walking stick, with me penknife, that will do her for a mole dibber.Best of all,she will come back more QUALIFIED than me.Ill t

Interesting all this,Ive noticed too many members seem to have a 'chip on their shoulder'.( and i include myself as one !)Surprisingly, even one or two of the more experienced and respected countrymen.(not sure why this is)Whats more important however, is how you conduct yourself on here.I think replying with criticism or defending yourself, can be acceptable, but its not respectful to include personal insults, along with it.(Im not dumb enough,or naive to take anything on here too personally anyway.)As for R.docks and Rolfe,to be fair i think youve BOTH made valid points during the course of th

Ive been at it longer, and i also learned about a trap i hadnt tried before, from a certain gents posts on the subject. ( I now use this type regularly,I thanked him for it too ! lol )

earth-thrower replied to earth-thrower's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I will have to check my old traps, but i dont think the spring rusted. It wasnt a heavy rust on the main parts either,so it didnt really affect the trap action.overall ,i think they are worth trying, especially for someone new to the game.I remember years ago doing my first big farm with these traps alone ! -

Not a bad idea mate,as youve expressed, these traps are prone to rust after a while. -

I should also add, that a mole catching friend recently disclosed to me,that you can 'adjust' these traps. He discussed how to do this over the phone. It would be interesting to see how this improves the capture rate!( I wish i was smart enough to think of this at the time ! LOL)Time for an experiment??? -

Now i may be wrong, but i felt at the time the spring maybe wasnt strong enough, and some moles escaped, but feel free to enlighten me if you disagree.
