  1. And there's the bit I just don't get you see nothing wrong with killing an animal on ground where it isn't a pest just to keep numbers down?? To me its as bad as those that believe smacking the odd fox will somehow save ground nesting birds they then fail to address any other predator or make environmental change. I guess there will always be those of us that see the bigger picture and there will always be those who just can't or won't. Great statement, well said.
  2. Cheers Matt, sounds a bit quicker,( once i get up to speed,LOL ) I take it they hold ,pretty well ?
  3. I havent done this for years, but this particular farmer ,wants them hanging.(suspect its for a neighbours benefit)Now ,i used to nick the skin with a knife, thread it with string, and then tie it to the fence.Whats a quicker way , without them falling off too soon ?The stretch i plan to use ,will be barbed wire.
  4. Matt, all you did was say how it is.You talk more sense than most. The points you make are valid, and also informative, for anyone whos interested.
  5. I dont believe theres any easy answer,to lessen the workload a bit,in this situation.I admire the guy for taking it on,cause alot of molemen wouldnt contemplate it,without the use of a quad.I know what its like, cause im still a 'foot soldier' myself.LOL.Sounds like theres going to be quite alot of moles, has the ground not been done for a while ?
  6. I can relate to alot of what you say, in your second paragraph.I also like the fenn scissor, and i used it exclusively for a few years.Handy wee trap. What kind of capture rate do you achieve with it?,i usually only averaged about 50%.
  7. To be fair, the club pro and the deputy greenkeeper are running the course at the moment. They wanted it retained, the pro says he still sees it as a priority. Its out of their hands though. As some of you have said, the moles will be back in force.I reckon two or three seasons, and the damage will be back to the same level it was, when i started. Its definately ' sign of the times ' , ' tightening the belt ' sort of stuff.Alot of golf courses are currently struggling financially, round here.
  8. Yes lads, interestingly, the head greenkeeper was off, after the new crowd took over. Not a good sign ! LOL When i first started,he told me they spent between four and five hundred on gas ,over a couple of seasons. But the place was still a mess, with hills.
  9. A new managment company, has taken over the golf course and country club, i did for moles.Theyve currently decided there will be no budget, for any mole control. There will be no " non-essental spending " they said.Particularly annoying, because after a couple of seasons , i had the moles down to minimum numbers, and at a nice managable level.I would have had alot less work for my fee, this time ! LOL
  10. I take my hat off to you LB and others on this thread. Three Talpex and three Flatpack tunnel traps arrived and were set. In one session of laying them I have four moles in the freezer awaiting delivery to a friend for their taxidermy skills. Now it's just a matter of working areas one at a time I guess as the fields are rife with hills. I went up yesterday with a rake and spread all of the hills out so I could see new movement in areas. The fields have molehills on pretty much all four sides. There are two fields in question and they are in turn next to other fields (where I have
  11. Am i right in thinking that the " common redpoll " , can also be called " mealy " ?
  12. Contributers have given you useful advice, with some providing comprehensive replies, offering you real insight, into the realities of the game. You would do well to take it on board.Too bad if you didnt like my response, you seem to get awful angry rather quickly.I now regret trying to answer you at all .
  13. No offence mate, first its you,now its your son! I hope your initial assumptions come to fruition, cause if they dont, you will soon discover, youve been naive about it all.
  14. Well,i certainly dont consider it expensive. Some charge more, and i dont blame them,if they can get it.LOL Some im sure will even charge less, but that doesnt make sense to me commercially.
  15. Oh dear ! didnt intend for that to be underlined.
  16. Im usually around £40 to £60 for a single mole in a garden.Good luck ,cause molemen are ten a penny now,in some areas.Alot of competition, and i believe this may apply ,in your own neck of the woods!
  17. I don't use second rate kit, I like to use the best there is, and its out there if you know what your looking for, as for that red shovel, their for sale in most shops in Skegness Well dont keep us all in suspense now.......LOL
  18. I like them all Matt, well worth doing.Believe it or not, i also recently discovered that one from UK Traps, LOL.Its a handy wee size, that four inch wide head on it.Now that youve revealed some info i wasnt aware of,i will no longer be considering it.
  19. Here ye go earthy, this (rubbish) photo shows the new one I had made alongside one of the older ones. Walter re-shafted the old one for me and did a fine job Matt,is that the same spade from the previous photo (leaning against quad),modified further,or not?
  20. The best I can find at the moment: Thanks Matt, must be nice to own them.I imagine they are not so easy to come by these days, or cheap to purchase, when you do.
  21. I see the changes Matt, and it looks good.
  22. Any chance of a photo or two of your old mole spuds ? LOL
  23. Likewise. Walter is a really nice guy, but I'm not sure where he got his ideas on molecatching from..... If you want a nice little spade for less money, ring him and ask for the 'Matt the Rat' type. Good stuff mate,I could be confident,it would be more suitable.
