  1. As far as im aware guys, 'proctors' latest barrel traps have been modified.Apparently ' Jeff Nicholls ' was consulted, and had an input in the slight design changes. You can read about this on the ' proctor site ' (news section),and i think the info may also be available on ' the guild of molecatchers ' site.
  2. think about it,?? the length of the trap dont matter,, its the distance between between trigger and hoop that matters !! but yes two inches smaller and a bit narrower be good Doesnt have to be narrower for me,and a shorter trap would be much preferable.Interesting point about the distance between trigger and loop, and i think traps are now available, where the manufacturer has tried to address this.
  3. Steve and Logan, I agree that the Duffus can be a very effective trap for moles, but ive felt for a long time now, that if a manufacturer could reduce the length of this type of trap, this would be beneficial.I admit to having no idea whether this would be possible!
  4. Thanks boys for the response,Paulus i didnt even realise(he he).Im interested Bry,any chance you could provide a photo?Seems theres quite a choice nowadays.
  5. Hello all, Can anyone tell me who supplies a decent mole dibber? My old one has shortened a bit over the years, and wore out to such an extent, its now pointed at the end.I do prefer one with an enlarged tip at the end.
  6. Tell you what, i soon learned off the resident gardener he had, that i was only called as a last resort. The guy told me straight his boss expected him to do the mole catching. He had some traps, but admitted he only ever caught the odd one.Problem was the mole activity had increased to such an extent on the lawns ,that they had to call a mole man in.(His lordship must have assumed that i was going to have as much success as the gardener ! )Although i cleared the lawn of moles,i knew they would be back again sooner or later,as the lawns were bordered by woodland.I never got called back, but a cou
  7. I well remember years ago, turning up for a'lord of the manor',to sort out some moles in his lawn. The FIRST thing he said to me was, "Let me just inform you now,if you only manage to catch one mole, then im afraid you will never be asked back here" I thought to myself ,what a cheeky c..t.I had to bite my tongue,as i wanted to give him a mouthful and walk off.I then quickly decided to myself "no, Ill show you" Anyway,a day or so later had the moles and presented them to him,(much to his surprise, going by his expression !)to which he replied " Oh, youve done really well !"
  8. Just started using the talpex (genuine) this season. Its an effective trap alright, but a bit costly.I wonder who currently supplies these at the best price ? Cant be any fun for anybody who has to order a large quantity !
  9. Hello again mate,I was once loaned a book (you may have heard of it)titled 'Fenland molecatcher'by Arthur Randell. At the end of one of the chapters,i remember him describing how he gets letters from people, asking the best ways of ridding their gardens of moles. He tells them to put a couple of bits of carbide in the runs.Id never heard of it before either, and im still not sure what it really is!
  10. Thinking about it the other day,i remembered how i first got into mole catching. It was an advert placed by a welsh mole catcher in the old Shooting News( now the Countrymans weekly)offering his booklet " The A to Z of mole catching " I sent away for it,and what a fascinating insight into the world of mole trapping it was.(I read it that much it eventually fell apart!)I SLOWLY took it from there, and when i EVENTUALLY caught my first mole,i was well and truly hooked. This was all more than 20 years ago.Anyone else want to reminisce?
  11. Trying to finish a couple of farms off at the moment, played a bit of cat and mouse, what with them spreading manure, fertiliser, and then rolling the silage fields.Couple of traps got wrecked with the tractor.Your right about it being to dry, doesnt help matters.
  12. Yes R.Docks , Im aware of that and your absolutely right.( didnt think most members on here would be that interested in the detail, just kept it simple, although you probably put it better than i could !)and you also make several interesting points Foxy09. cheers.
  13. When the use of strychnine hydrochloride for mole control in the uk finally came under review,i knew this was the first real chance in years to be rid of it.Myself along with a FEW others campaigned hard to try and ensure this outcome.Who then, would have realised that the use of monstrous explosive devices in the form of burrow blasters, would be permitted here in the uk for destroying mole tunnel systems, unbelievable!Im also a bit taken aback at the current LEVEL of interest in traditional mole trapping, what with every tom, dick and harry wanting to become a molecatcher!A certain organisatio
  14. On the odd occasion, i've had the misfortune of discovering a mole caught by it's forelimb, in my duffus traps.Anyone else experienced this ?
  15. Cheer's for the replies,so you don't need to alter the hook then ?
  16. I've heard that flatpack's barrel traps don't require any adjusting. Can anyone confirm this ? thanks.
  17. Fair point, I considered this and after checking the area out during the day, returned later in the evening, about 9 o'clock, all quiet so set the traps.I returned early morning the next day about 7.15 am,had a mole and lifted the traps.
  18. Trying to deal with a small area of mole activity, which is roughly in the centre of a park/playing field.Only one fresh hill being put up,rest of them flat and stale.Managed to set a couple of traps in tunnels that seemed old and not well used, anyway picked up a mole the following day.Problem solved (or so i thought)less than a week later another mole, which also is only putting up one or two hills.Im thinking the moles are coming from deep, maybe travelling along old field drains.Id appreciate any thoughts or comments on this one , Thanks.
  19. Hello , Can anyone recommend a good pair of knee pads ? one's that dont slip or move around the knees too much , and preferably waterproof. Cheer's .
  20. Hi all , I would be interested to know when other molecatchers stop trapping agricultural land , or do any try and trap all year round ? Just curious , Thanks.
