Jobs You Can Never Get Away From
earth-thrower replied to LuckOrJudgement's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Does this work well for you? If I was the customer would think perhaps you are not very good or trying to rip me off as you charge every visit, so would be in your interest not to catch quickly? Best thing I ever did. I tell them it will be the initial visit plus one possibly two more visits 99% of the time. Im a molecatcher turned pesty and very good at catching moles and the customer is virtually always over the moon. Ive seen pestys turned molecatchers though that couldnt catch a cold never mind a mole, they couldnt do it. As for being in my interest not to catch quickly, no. Im no -

I believe anyone who thinks you can ALWAYS charge, what you want ?,..or EVEN what you need to charge, to make it worthwhile,...but, the customer declines ? (in some cases ),...with 'mole catching' ?? ,....im afraid, will be in for a 'rude awakening' ! lol -

Well, im the opposite,...the "Garden jobs", can certainly be more 'lucrative' ,...but personally, im less keen on these types of jobs, as time goes on. I can spend alot of time having 'dialogue', answering customers questions, etc (& ones 'standing over you',..while you work, irritates me a little, too). Not to mention the dogs, children, etc,....who always seem too have the run of the place, (even while laying traps, when youve specified otherwise ? ),.....nah, i still prefer 'wandering' the larger areas, in pursuit of old 'moley' ! (although it doesnt get any easier, year after year ? -
Those' types' who want to 'do it themselves' , annoy me,....i dont entertain them, & wont try & show them. (thats just me , though) Get some farmers, also, phoning for advice,...who do theyre own moles,....but they want to try & 'pick your brains', for any tips on dealing with some 'difficult' ones ?,.......or they want to know how to set & install, a new type of trap ! (they wouldnt give you a job, though !) ,....what do they think it is ? lol
-
Just thinking,.. you get that 'Lady Molecatcher' in, for him ,.....tell her you want a good 'cut' of the money ? ,...cause it seems, she will 'charge' THAT MUCH for doing it ! ha ha ha ha

"cant think that anyone of a decent nature called in to catch the moles for work...,would try and take your permission",........................yes, i agree
-
Why do you feel obliged ? (if its not, your thing ?) Is it permission, or paid work ? I would definitely recommend you pass it on, if your not keen,.....(theres PLENTY mole catchers, nowadays) & he has too PAY , if he wants it done right !

The latest 'offer' from the BTMR, & i quote - " The British Mole catchers Register is now offering on-site training for UK sports venues who may be struggling to deal with moles and molehills across their pitches and courses,....blah,.....blah,.....Get in touch with us now about how we can train your grounds-keeping team and maintenance staff in the best ways to clear moles from your pitches, fields & fairways ! ",...........Question - How is this 'advertisement', gonna benefit, your 'subscription' paying members, then, exactly ?? ,............ Answer - its NOT !,.....cause its in

Aye, for what seems like 'field' work ! lol,.....(maybe she thought it might just be the one, there ! ),....dont blame her for not quoting 'cheap',.....but, not at the thought of her telling potential clients, that the rest of us must be 'corrupt', if anothers price is more competitive ?,....its just unnecessary, and can give a 'bad impression', generally ?

Read a recent article, about 'mole catchers', ,... concerning this 'female mole catcher', & couldnt believe the 'cheek' of it, frankly !,................heres the paragraphs,........." Standing by the front door of a farmhouse in Norfolk, Chapman patiently waits for her first customer of the day to go inside to discuss pricing with his partner. She has assessed his field and intends to charge him £50 per mole, if he is willing to take her up on the offer. The customer sheepishly returns to decline her request, saying he'll have to check with his wife and that he will look elsewhere for a

I seen a 'hen' blackie, a couple o weeks ago , in a local park,.....'pied' do you call it ? (white patches, with speckling, she had ?),....first one, for a good few year,...only ever saw the odd 'cock' bird before, with a bit o white, too,...never a hen

Old Style, Mole Trap, Catching Well
earth-thrower replied to earth-thrower's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I wouldnt have thought, beforehand,.. the moles would have readily, entered a plastic 'hollow cylinder',type trap, (in particular) so easily ?,.....but there, you go,...(its been proven),......these old style, ones, are ok, for the 'novelty' value,.....but for regular, commercial trapping,... im afraid, its hard too beat , your modern 'metal' type, of whatever preference. ? (for various reasons, i suppose ?) -

No mate, i aquired one, as a gift,........(lucky, i think),...& then i commisioned, a very 'talented' lad, who works with wood,..too make me another (was expensive enough, though, for his time !),....this lads in his early, twenties,..& has worked with some, top 'wood carvers', 'turners', etc, from an early age....hes very good (with a workshop, with EVERYTHING you would need, for 'wood working', etc),........i do have a 'plastic' (gas pipe) one, which ive yet , too try ? (although, its documented, they work !) -

A capture, in this wooden barrel trap,.....(don't want a 'suckling' sow, though !)?,......& It was a female, but not nursing, thankfully,. -
Aye Phil,... this very 'dry' spring, has drawn them, too that spot,.... ? could be doing, with a 'bit' o rain now, in these parts ? ( 'doe' moles are just about ready too drop, their young now, where i am),.....if this 'lack o rain' is gonna continue, into summer, its not gonna help the moles (as far as 'disperal' & ultimately survival, of young uns, are concerned ?)

Got a surprise, when the farmer phoned, saying there was 'molehills',all over a silage field,i did a month ago.(only caught two, there,at the time) thing is,it was a damp field,... but plenty 'field drains',there,....with alot of those 'depressions'(sink holes),indicating this. When I walked it,i found about eight or nine,of these, with a 'string' of molehills, coming out, each one !

Molecatcher Of The Year?
earth-thrower replied to trappa's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Sorry, may not have made it clear. I am not doing the farm as such. The moles, he says, are located around his takeoff runway in a field and garden. The farm which is sheep is not being touched Well, making an 'educated' guess, here ,.....you SHOULD have enough traps, for this situation ,.....& if you can get him to agree, to the £50, per visit ?,....you COULD be ok, here ?,......(as long as your 'capture rate', is good enough, though ? ),....good luck, if it goes ahead ? (keep us posted ! lol) -
Molecatcher Of The Year?
earth-thrower replied to trappa's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Aye, its an individual, thing,.....i take my time, & i get better results ?,....(it makes sense, of course, too try & 'speed' up the trap setting, in commercial situations ?,..but i dont try,...im set in my ways, now,.. ) But, im fully aware, that SOME folk, can 'whack in', an impressive amount ? ,.....& good luck to them, too.
