    I think legally it has to be 8 weeks. This aside if its feeding well by its self then possibly earlier. One issue about taking a pup earlier than this is that its still learning social skills with its litter mates at this age. If taken away early it misses some of this stage and can lead to problems later on regarding interaction with other dogs.

    Always thought chicks weren't very nutritional but then went on Neil Forbes bird of prey day and guess what they are better than I thought. No they wount put weight on like rat/quail/pidgeon/phessie but if you feed enough of them they will put weight on your bird. Now its dropping cold overnight there will be lots of birds that start to go lower than expected - lets hope not too low. My male gos is really packing the food away now just to hold his weight when only a few weeks ago the same amount would have had him far to high the next day.     my experience with accipiters is limited but when at correct weight they chase instinctively. go back to basics and carcass b the perch and let her feed and then try dragged again. How come you went with a parent reared spar mate? Brave choice wit such tight weight control. regards ian

    Hello there carcass feeding will show her that they are food but u may want to try putting the carcass on a line and throwing it over a branch. Get a mate to slowly bounce up and down abit so she takes it in the air. That way she used to stuff thats flying. Where abouts in shropshire r u Regards ian

    So what weight is he now when you are flying him?? If you were flying at 1.3 before the moult then at 1.8 it is possible that he isn't ready yet at that weight. Harris's are often thought of as lazy because they fly to their owners at weights which are far higher than their hunting weight. Please dont just drop his weight because I have posted this though. Sorry dont know your level of experiance. Have you felt his keel and do you know how? Have you hunted a harris before? Do you know any one who can assess the birds condition for you? If you know all this then sorry for questions.

    Hello there. have you felt his keel - is he sharp? Harris's are very good at looking like they r on weight but they rnt. Please note I am not advising dropping his weight as so many other factors can have a bearing but it is worth checking the keel. You say that he takes the lure but does he hit a rabbit carcass? Even the way the carcass moves is different to the real thing. Rabbits run and jump whereas lures and carcass's just slither. My female had me pulling my hair out as she just sat and watched the real thing but wouldnt hit carcass's. eventually she found one she liked and too

    Phessies have lots of loose feathers so are able to break away very effectively. The more he hits the more he will learn. Smaller males are more agile and faster so you are compensated for the fact that he doesn't have more weight to pin them down. Yes it will be frustrating when they get away but this stage woun't last for ever and his kills will soon go up. regards Ian

    Until this season I was using a Sporting Lucas Terrier with mine. My friend also used a Parsons Russel with his. It was a few years old when he got his first bird and we were worried how it would react to the birds but they settled down fine. regards, Ian

    Have you trieda training line and then take her to an area where there will be scent. That way when she is scenting around you can prevent her taking off from a distance and recall her. Keep at it and she should learn that you are still in control even at a distance away from her and to control herself. regards, ian

    Sometimes it does take a while for the penny to drop. My current female did the same thing. She would take the dummy and carcasse's all day long without hesitation but lost count of the rabbits she watched go past and never moved. I had her weight up and down and it made no difference. Thought about giving up on her loads of times but kept plugging away and eventually found one she liked the look of and bang. Never looked back. regards ian

    Saw this once with my friends gos. He started to smash the bones up to make sure it ate them and soon saw them come back. Just because its eating quail doesn't mean it isn't picking the meat off the bone and leaving the rest. Start with a good quality supplement and when you pull her you can then ensure she is eating bone. It may take a while because the talon will have to grow out with full vitiamin content. regards, ian
