  1. what i would do is; when you give him his food, get someone a couple of rooms away (doors shut) to bang some pots and pans together, you stay with your dog and if he gets scared, stop banging and let him eat and then do it quieter untill he ignores it(few days)and then start getting closer and louder. if this dont work pm me and ill run you through a few other ideas. matt
  2. true, but i think he means the older style hunting terriers; kerry blue, irish etc. in think its because the kc have ruined them.
  3. IMO its not what's in the dogs breeding, but how it performs. if its a good worker and you can give the pups good homes go for it!
  4. so southern english country, what breed would excel? probably most hunting would be in woodlands etc.
  5. i wouldn't use this cross personaly, 1/2 staff would make it too slow, especially as its only 1/4 running dog-IMO. and try to buy from working strain
  6. surely thats due to training though?
  7. so pretty much any dog can be used then? obviously if trained right. would any of you boarhunters consider other breeds? deerhounds etc
  8. not a chance of me hunting em with my current dogs, maybe someday... ive had one sighting, no pic - obvious reasons!! it was about 30mins away from where i live, didnt see much of it, its was a dull pinkish grey colour with speckles of black and grey, absolutely massive. havent seen one again and this was about 2 years ago. love to see some of our aussie and american buddies over and trying it!!!
  9. couldn't you get the brains from a tougher breed? maybe one also bred to hunt? im a thickshit as far as boar hunting is concerned :11: i think russian boar are larger, but then the ones ive seen over here were pretty feckin hefty too!!!
  10. does your ridgex hold or bay?
  11. someone on here had one, said it would take all hooved quarry.
  12. beautiful dog mate so would you say a purebred is too slow for fox etc?
  13. fair point kiwi, is there any particular reason you use boxerxlabs?
  14. i know that mate, he was taking the piss, and so was i above i know a bloke thats hunted ridge's for 20 odd years, like everything i think getting from working stock is the most important thing, his take foxes, deer, pigs and other quarry it would mainly be used on fox and other animals that size and above, also be used as a guard dog, i havent found any other dogs that are able to do this. anyone got any other ideas? btw, they are softmouthed. matt
  15. how does he hunt them? trailing and then running them down?
  16. seems abit of a dumb question i know, but i was reading through some dog books awhile ago and under the history of loads of dogs, it says they were used to hunt boar. so why arent these dogs used today? just to give you an idea of the breeds, the book said that all these were used to hunt boar; weimaraner, vizla, pointers, ridgebacks, kuvasz, boxer, chien francais aswell as all the dogs used today. does anyone still use these breeds? thanks matt
  17. never had the privilege to work one of these, but from what i hear, they sound like the bees breasts. anyone seen purebreds work? thanks matt
  18. Does anyone on here own or work any guard dog breeds and if so so how do they compare to other crosses in terms of hunting ability, and does anyone own or work livestock guard x's? thanks matt
  19. just checked out some sites on these dogs, if they weren't on the dwa list, im sure loads more people would have them. has anyone on here got any firsthand knowledge on these dogs either crossed or pure bred? thanks in advance, matt
  20. if you haven't already got your pup mate and you'd like to check out another litter of gsp's, pm me and i'll give you the breeders number. brilliant working stock, ive been picking up with her and her dogs for a couple of years now, hers are about as steady as gsp's come!! matt
  21. my aunt lives about 5 minutes walk away from that womans house. she heard the commotion and took her mongrel to have a look. she was well pissed at the journalists, she said it wasnt a bull terrier at all(shes got a 14yr old ebtas well) it looked like a boxerxbullmastiff.
  22. i guess its fair to say i've probably got a pretty bad view on saluki's, having only seen 1(shocker) run, and im biased towards deerhound x's anyway!lol
