Matt Your concern is very valid - but I think the answer is 'yes' we should be having this discussion. Many people not professionally connected with pest control do not become aware of changes in the law as much as perhaps the legislators imagine. That's where professional pesters like yourself add a lot of value. The opening question is a good one; 'Is it legal ?' The answer is still 'yes' but in much more controlled circumstances than used to be the case. That has been made very clear early on by rank and file members of the forum. Good news in my view that people are aware

Effectively 'paper'. the wasps chew up wood to make it.

Danielt Anyone with DONATOR status can post in this section, regardless of when they donated, as long as they are still 'current'. However there are some threads that started by non-donators before that rule was in place. If excessive bumping gets them deleted then they won't be able to 'RE LIST' because they now need donator status. Unless the donate in which case they will be OK

Up to now I have been easing you into this gently and just deleting some of the sly bumps rather than knocking out the whole topic. However you've all had over a week to get used to the rules for this section so I'm not prepared to waste anymore time handholding. From now on any breach of the rules and the topic will just disappear - which would be a particular shame if you're not a 'donator' an ineligible to relist. Fair warning.

welcome aboard.

I've got a good mind to close this thread down. Right now.

Are you sure ? I thought Blackbirds did use boxes; granted open fronted like robins though, not the 'hole in the front' variety http://www.dietecuk.com/garden-birds/nest-.../prod_2663.html
-
Thanks for all the replies - I shall stick to tit and sparrow boxes then, Oh and maybe a blackbird one
-
Well that might explain why I can't find any info then.

I'm just about to make some more boxes and as we've just started to get a pair of goldfinches visit the garden regularly it would be nice to make one they will use. I can find guidlines for entrance size for most birds but not goldies. Anyone know ?

Well I have a hunch that they don't go for eggs that much during winter, but lets get down to brass tacks. Are they coming to have a look but not going in ? or just not paying attention. If its the latter then get a slice of clean bright white bread, cut it into 1cm squares and scatter that around the trap on the floor. I find that helps to get them interested. Add a broken egg to the nest; one broken, one whole.

You mentioned your baiting, have you read this in the FAQs ? http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=37477

Unfortunately, like many aspects of the law, it is open to interpretation which then gets hammered out in case law.

well that's an interesting and potentially controversial question I have a 'principle' view and a 'personal' on this. The principle for me is that I don't mind how big a shoot is provided that it's safe, well managed and the shot game is treated and used as food. Shooting a large number of pheasant is no different to commercial harvesting of any other crop. On a personal note however I don't particularly enjoy large shoots, particularly as a beater. I like the amiable banter and slightly 'dads army' feel of a small shoot. The large ones I have been too are strict, tight and blo

well done that man let everyone have a read then I'll make your post a 'pinned'

Roller - is that something you could consider posting as an FAQ ? might be useful to a lot of people
-
Well that was the point really. There was some debate on here a while ago about night shooting in general but noone could find anything on the DEFRA site which gave any clear guidance. I think that this particular bit only applies to Scotland and as far as I know England and Wales is ok - but then as I say I can't find very much. I'm pretty sure England and Wales are OK for rats and rabbits but it would be nice to find something definitive.

click on your name as it appears here in you post. the last one of the rop down list is 'members posts'

They're fairly simple to make once you have a model to work from I did an article on making one too http://www.thehuntinglife.com/html/section...abbit-trap.html

Now funny you should ask that ..... http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=37477

How is you larsen coming on Kb ?

so is that right john a bucket covered is an artificial Well that's where lawyers make their money My opinion is that so long as the trap was covered, so that access was reasonably limited to the size and habit of the intended quarry you would be fine. For the purpose of this 'law' a tunnel can be any covered space with restricted access. Dictionary defn of tunnel includes: A passage through or under a barrier. But don't quote me if it goes to court edited to add: The law doesn't appear to give any heed to foul catches or otherwise.

Well I just stumbled over this for Scotland Amendment of Agriculture (Scotland) Act, 1948, as to spring traps The following sections shall be substituted for section fifty of theAgriculture (Scotland) Act, 1948 (which regulates the use of firearms and spring traps for the purpose of killing hares or rabbits):— 50 Prohibition of night shooting, and use of spring traps (1)Subject to the provisions of this ssection, a person shall be guiltyof an offence under this subsection if— (a)between the expiration of the first hour after sunset and thecommencement of the last hour before s

The 2007 variation on the Spring Trap Approvals order (LINK) states 'The trap must be set in a natural or artificial tunnel which is suitable for minimising the chances of injuring or killing non-target species whilst not compromising the capture and killing of target species' when referreing to Solway mk4 and 6 traps. Now I can't find an online copy of the 1995 order which covers Fenns by name, but they are broadly the same I believe.
