  1. extract from a forthcoming best seller Yes the idea is that the baffle is a plane sheet metal and stops the animal getting to the real door. But seriously there are a few existing books you need to buy or at least borrow: - Bateman's "Trapping a Practical Guide", - Carnegie's "Practical Trapping & Conservation" and maybe Haddon-Riddoch's "Rural Reflections". A history of traps this one but some fascinating pictures.
  2. I agree with the comments about under trees. I gave up on eggs in mine today and had a call bird off a mate. Put it in at 12 noon and had two catches by 4pm. Watching them there were 4 gathering in the trees and this one right above the trap in particular.
  3. well I don't know. It might have something to do with all those gulls about - disrupting the behaviour Or might be because it's on the bales ? I've never put one up that high - try it on the floor right up against the bales.
  4. Is that a call bird inside ? or two on the outside ? I can't tell
  5. Wow that's a lot of decoys you've got out there Teejay. How many did you use ?
  6. bloody ridiculous - this is the most we've had all year - and in April
  7. welcome to the site. So that's winter sorted then - what are you going to do for the summer months ?
  8. working your way through the catalogue aren't you mate Well done
  9. Why have you got 2 call birds ? The whole principle of the trap is that the free magpies start a territorial argument with the the one in the box. Surely having 2 there already is just going to confuse all of them ?
  10. Yes that'll be fine. Didn't look that big in the pic but maybe my eyes are going.
  11. Look solid and well made from the pic, but might be a bit on the small side. How big is it ?
  12. DD, I built one from these plans http://www.beautifulbritain.co.uk/htm/wild...ng/bird_box.htm
  13. What precision. Makes our 'photo and tape' rule look quite amateurish.
  14. Here you go - these are the actual design and colour. The bobs are 300mm long and the shoulders are 40mm across. I think I've posted now to everyone who's paid so from here on it's £3.50 per ten and £2 P&P
  15. That's true. In that instance you'd be using the 'serious damage' licence http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/conservat...L%20Gen-L05.pdf Good job on the traps by the way boys
  16. Just for clarity there are several General Licences which allow birds to be trapped or shot. The one most often relating to magpies covers the Protection of Wild Birds. Anyone using a larsen should be familiar with this document; read it, understand it, conform to it and ideally have a copy to hand. http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/conservat...L%20Gen-L08.pdf
  17. Matt recommended a Monarch type - pic below. They have a repeating door which resets after a rat has gone through. I recognise the design you're talking about - with a main treadle release door and a little 'push past' door at the back. I think they're often marketed as 'family' traps but I have no experience of them and I'd be a bit concerned that the back door could be opened from inside.
  18. I have been able to obtain a second copy of this book - brand new. Same deal as before if anyone want's it - £10 all in. I know that someone local to me was interested in a copy last time but I can't remember who
  19. That was the reply from DEFRA and I'm waiting for them to find me a copy of the 1997 amendment on line (I can find '95 and '07 but not '97). I think the ref to 'clones' is as discussed here and the posts following it. I think 'clones' are different to 'copies' in that they are identical
  20. Well here's the answer: Re: your query about the Victor Conibear 120-2 It is approved for the purpose of killing or taking grey quirrels, mink, rabbits, stoats, weasels, rats, mice and other small ground vermin and must be set in a natural or artifical tunnel which is suitable for the purpose. In 1997, the list of traps approved under the Spring Traps Approval Order 1995 was amended to include clones of types approved under the 1995 Order, which included the Victor Conibears. The list of traps approved was amended again in 2007, which included the following for mink against mi
  21. Now come on guys - it's always been pretty civilised in this corner of the forum so lets not start bitching now. It's a good question from someone with limited experience, (I think?) who wants to understand the realities of something before they get involved. I'll tidy up the topic and just leave the factual posts. John
  22. HUMANE: Marked by sympathy, compassion or concern for other humans or for animals. You only have to read the topics on here so see how much effort goes into getting catches right, clean and efficient with minimum suffering. A well placed, up to the job trap can be quicker than many of the humane abattoir practises.
