  1. HI there, if the majority of your shots are say 70-200m them i think the 8x56 would be fine, I have a 6x42 on my .17 HMR and though it does obscure some of the target (rabbit head) i can still make an accurate shot, you have to take slightly more time over it. Though a variable scope is nice to have it's not absolutely necessary though with rabbit shooting at a small target, the extra mag would help, up until the USMC changed their Day sniper scope to the S&B they use now, I think they were still using a fixed 10X scope! so i would say if you don't want to spend the earth but still want qu
  2. I asked this question in the deer section a few days ago- general consensus is no. you can shoot as others have said CWD and Muntjac with a .22 cf, bullet weight must be at least 50gn and making 1000 ft/lbs, i reckon the Remington core lokt ultra bonded or nosler partition would be good choices, in 62 and 60gn respectively but no, i think there was discussion a few years back on whether .223 should be allowed for roe and again the decision was no DB
  3. I would choose a Schmidt & Bender 3-12x50 or the Swarovski 3-12x50, expensive, yes, but IMO the best you can buy I have a S&B 6x42 and it's just amazing, the light transmission and clarity, sharpness.... European glass is the way to go... DB
  4. bugger- Sako's clever marketing ploy- I guess like mauser and blaser only making their own mounts available... though if it was cost effective, i suppose you could have the taper machined out by a gunsmith so they were parralel... but i reckon it would cost more to do that than just buy the rings themselves...
  5. Oh brilliant! i'll go have a look see and reply! I may be gone some time! DB
  6. there are loads of deer suitable bullets for the .223, remington make a 62gn i thing core lokt ultra bonded, nosler make a 60gn partition, and a few others, I can't remember them all off the top of my head...
  7. there's a General Lisence issued by the seretary of state each year, to shoot the pest species, but I think game birds are covered under that when their open seasons are,
  8. Hi all, would these rings made by Warne HERE fit a Sako 85, I assume they would as they're made to fit the Tikka, and considering Tikka are made by sako I guess they'd fit... Cheers DB
  9. I really wouldn't take advice on reloading from a forum, not that the guys on here would try and write anything wrong, but what may be safe in one rifle may be dangerous in another, i'd do an internet search and find a varget reloading manual and work loads up that way... DB
  10. HI all, i'm just wondering if any of you know who undertakes work on new Sako rifles like duracoating and bedding into synth stocks I've tried border barrels and rimfire magic (south yorkshire shooting supplies) and neither of them seem to do any of that.... plus, do you know if you can just buy a barreled action or do you have to buy the whole rifle? Cheers DB
  11. definitely go for them! i'm saving up for a pair of 8x40s ATM but i had a look through some swaro scopes at the CLA a couple of years back, and they're just astounding... absoulutely amazing clarity, sharpness and brightness
  12. those kind of comments make me so angry, these people clearly have no idea that without management, the deer populations would be far larger, poorer quality and be in much worse health.... i wish people would see the benefits not just the harmless defenseless bambi side DB
  13. What an annoying post give more details like why its annoying, how much more annoying it should be. Please in future think before you get annoyed. Im sorry? I gave my reasons in my first post, because there was no information, it's like someone else said, what's the best car? the best car for what? it was a non specific question with no real answer. why make a useless comment designed to shit stir? DB
  14. sure accidents can happen, we take calculated risks every day! statistically, i reckon in all honesty that we are far more likley to be injured in a car accident than from shooting, but unless the safety blocks the firing pin or cams it out of alignment, there isn't any difference as it will only be blocking the trigger, like with many airguns... DB
  15. what an annoying thread, give more details like what are you going to use it for, how much do you want to spend, please in future think before you post. DB
  16. Hi all, I wonder, have any of you come across synthetic stocks for the Anschuts 1500 (.17 HMR) series of rifles? or do you know whether the stocks made my McMillan HERE (at the bottom of the page) can be inletted for the longer 1500 rifles? Cheers DB
  17. oh no neither, i'm just interested, I only shoot .17HMR and Shotgun ATM
  18. really what is the issue here? you don't like having the safety off for unloading right? you don't have your finger in the trigger guard whilst operating the bolt? you're not riding on a test track for tank suspension? so there's no jolting, manufacturers design their rifles to fire when the trigger is pulled! so just point it in a safe direction, likley as not you'll either be at a range or in the field, so downrange or at a bank, or hill away from people so it's completely safe! if you think the rifle could discharge with the safety off on it's own then you should take it to the gunsho to
  19. AS far as i know there is no difference between red and blue tipped ammo, rumor has it that the blue tips are from the .17HM2 calibre, presumably they didn't sell as much of it as they expected and had a bunch of 17gn bullet heads lying about so they decided to put them on .17HMR! zero@ 100m and shoot to 120m, I clean my rifle after every outing, as it's the same as a CF rifle, with a copper jacket so there'll be residues of copper in the barrel what will degrade accuracy, use a copper solvent which doubles as a powder solvent, i use Pro Shot Copper Solvent IV, and that works fine
  20. I've heard conflicting info regarding carbide does, some say you don't have to lube them, some say you do and that they are only scratch resistant... so which is it it? or is it both depending on the circumstance? Cheers DB
  21. Hi all, I was just wondering, as I suspect you guys are probably better connected than me, is there any likelihood of the laws being changed in England to allow the use of .22CF for roe deer? Cheers DB
  22. cheers guys! I guess for the average mortal it isn't worth the expense... @ AB TAC, nice to have someone on board who really knows their field!! Cheers DB
  23. Hi there, you will probably be best off with dropping the rifle into a free floated and properly bedded synthetic stock from someone like Bell & Carlson H-S Precision or McMillan as the flimsy factory stock isn't free floated with the weight of the barrel, here's a review on the Snipers Hide website where they do just that and it makes quite an improvement, I'd suggest you try that first and then go from there! Cheers DB
  24. Cheers, would a blueprinted action cost much more than a factory one? and is it possible to blueprint an action with the barrel on it, as well as re-crowning, or would the barrel and action need to be separated?, so for competition shooters, there is a benefit, but what kind of improvement are we talking about here? from 1moa to 1/2 moa? or not that much? Cheers DB
