  1. Just off the top of my head I can say that such coursing men as Chalkie, Tony H, Jim F and the most succesful Forley cup competitor of all Alan S will admit to use treadmills as part of their conditioning. I'm sure Alan would be interested to hear where he went wrong in winning the thing twice and running up once. Where this notion of one hour on the mill and 23 hours in a pen came from I've no idea! Please don't judge us by those poor standards. When I built my aviary and my dog boxes I used a cordless drill to screw in the brackets......would I have been more of a countryman had I used a
  2. http://youtube.com/watch?v=ilYS-Va8oIY They're handy as an optional extra. When I'm at work and the duchess opens their pen they hop up naturally, but when they see me with the leads they know the drill, It's time for the fields.
  3. Having hunted all three types of hares in these Islands I have to say that the Brown hare is the fastest and the one with most stamina. The largest hares I've caught have all been Irish doe hares and the whiteys are good for giving confidence and picking up practice to youngsters. Ten or twelve years ago I pulled an Irish hare from the freezer to take across to the lads who were kindly taking us on their permission in Lincolnshire. They hadn't seen one before. We went on the Forley cup land with a team of good friends and killed double figures. Not a single brown hare was as big as the Irish h
  4. I find that a length of flat nylon tape with a loop for the wrist at one end and a smaller loop stitched back on itself at the other for the trigger fingers works well as it slides out from under the collar with minimum resistance....
  5. Apparently the authorities had already investigated this dog twice last summer and didn't find it to be a pitbull then or they would have been obliged to confiscate it under the dangerous dogs legislation. NOW they're calling it a "pitbull type". Talk about "give a dog a bad name"
  6. Fine set of triceps...........!!
  7. thanks for those Countrylass. Check out the bull section for a reply......to avoid boring the pants off the lurchermen and women
  8. Hi Countrylass, hope you don't mind me introducing myself with a question, but could you tell me anything about the breeding of the red staff in your avitar? I have had staffs myself since 1967 and once had some rather good red dogs and bitches ( my favourite colour in staffs ). Also I'd love to see more pix of yours if possible.
  9. Well mate I've decided to take no chances............just in case I should break my own right wrist, I've been practising with my left one all afternoon......and I ain't spilt a drop yet !!!
  10. ,as it destroys the biotin in the eggs, I think that was a slip of the typing finger, Inan, as it's the enzyme avidin that inhibits the absorbtion of biotin and is destroyed by cooking. Hope everyone is having a great christmas......especially my friend Tommy, who tells me he has joined the ranks of the single handed coursers by breaking his wrist at the pre-christmas knees up.

Here's a niece to your black bitch Top Chalker, bred out of my saluki bitch and Max. Max was a litter brother to your bitch and same markings too. We have some pups here outa Delboy and Clives bitch, (sister to Splodge). Delboy is a brother to your white bitch.
  12. He sure is a gentleman, and it was he who first got me into hawking about ten years ago. And as for the women Boots, I think they all want to mother him but, hey, whatever gets results!! :11:
  13. That's a rip off Frank, twenty odd years ago we used to travel about 10 miles to a hatchery that left out massive vats of freshly killed d.o.c.'s on a monday and thursday morning when they did the culls of all the male birds. They were free to anyone who wanted them and we used to fill two plastic bins on the back of a trailer for dog and ferret feeding. You had to get there before 10:00 a.m. because they were picked up for incineration after that. Years later they began boxing and blast freezing them and you had to pay £5 per box, but the box was as heavy as you would want to be carrying, wi
  14. Sick I understand,dead??? Gastric torsion's a possibility mate.
  15. As far as I am concerned a lurcher is whichever dog can catch what you're hunting single handed, ( unless its a rat of course ) :11:
  16. try a border collie ffs!!! One of the countrys most experienced Harris Hawkers ( Hollinshead ) has been using a border collie for years so whats the beef?
  17. For what it's worth I like to stay well away from extremes, ( well.....unless it's EXTREMELY good at catching ). Somewhere around the middle ground is a size that is "big enough" to be capable of doing the job and still "small enough" to have the agility, athleticism and stamina required to get there. It all depends on what "the job" is. I can think back to two of my own dogs as examples. One was Fly, a whippet/greyhound /Irish terrier mix about 23" which caught hares for fun, would scoop up daytime rabbits in a flash or run the lamp all night long, and never refused a fox. The other was a
  18. Agree with that 100% Kane. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear. The best trained lab will never make a match dog. The cleverest collie will never make a weight pull champion. But the best bred saluki can be the hardest dog in the world to get back on the lead if you miss out the early socialization! :realmad: :realmad: :realmad:
  19. It makes you appreciate the short time we have with our hunters, I feel for you JD
  20. Fashion would only apply in the show ring R&D, I imagine people who actually hunt will keep whichever cross suits their purpose. For example I keep saluki crosses because I hunt hares.......someone who concentrates on foxes is more likely to keep bull or wheaten crosses etc.
  21. Anyone who ever tried to get a tune from a guitar should try to see this guy. Since I was a kid I been a fan of the great Chet Atkins, but Tommy Emmanuel is even better. Check out his website with your speakers on............he does all that with an accoustic guitar and no fancy recording tricks. He's in the uk this year again and you can bet I ain't gonna miss him. Not just a great virtuoso but a fabulous entertainer as well. tommyemmanuel.com
  22. 100% Kye! Why try to reinvent the wheel?
