  1. Yes that's old Ruby, taken when she was young Ruby in the early 90's.
  2. Fair play to you Meerihunter, you deserve nothing but success for all the time, effort and expense you've invested in the project.
  3. Light, perigrine in a stoop and spine tailed swift in level flight.
  4. Feck the anti's do you not have XXL?
  5. Going by the breeding it must have been bred by my old mucker from sunny Glasgow?
  6. This guy can hold an audience spellbound all night with no band and no electronic distortion, just a beat up old accustic. Eric Clapton, Les Paul, Joe Satriani and the legendary Chet Atkins have all been quoted as calling him the best they've seen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&feature=related&hl=en-GB&v=hOw6gCPDEQ8
  7. It must be great to live in a free country......over here we have only memories!
  8. For the benefit of anyone who may be unfamiliar with the comparative sizes of adult hares and baby leverets...... Bearing in mind that the Harris Hawk is generally bigger and considerably stronger than the European Buzzard, and apologies to whoever posted these pics on the web.....I saved them a long time ago.
  9. I think the birds that Americans call buzzards are the ones we in Europe call vultures, which are much heavier. Our buzzards are like a scaled down version of your Redtail......but with smaller talons, less attitude. Ive flown both redtails and harris hawks at rabbits and never had one take off with an adult rabbit aboard. And both these birds are way stronger than a buzzard.
  10. I always carried a bottle of water with Betacel dissolved into it at the rate of one teaspoonful of powder per 1/2 litre. No need to add glucose as it's already in there in the correct proportion along with potassium, calcium et al, as designed to be the proper electrolyte balance for greyhounds.
  11. That's a type of cement that sets to keep the toe rigid but it needs the ligament to be intact to hold it in place. I had a saluki greyhound bitch in the early 90's that knocked up a toe in her hind nearside foot. the ligament had snapped and every time she put pressure on it turning, the unsupported joint would over flex and pop out through the skin. Vet couldn't cement it as it was more or less punctured, would have just ran out before setting. Gerry S. is your man. He's back practicing again in Lurgan. Or Jones in Newry is a very good greyhound vet. P.S. I think I hunted with your dad a
  12. There's a pond in a local forest where we walk the pups and last weekend as we approached it the surfaced was bubbling with frogs (trying to get out of sight from us). When we went for a closer look the whole place was awash with spawn as was a smaller pond that it drains into. Great to see after the winter we've just had.
  13. Here's a link to a study carried out by researchers at Queens University Belfast that tends to support my thoughts on the above http://www.ni-environment.gov.uk/irishharegeneticsreport.pdf
  14. The land we were on was varied Whin. There was heather, where the hares provided no challenge, there were rushy grass areas where they ran better, and then the blackened burn off areas where they were at their best. The Irish hare is a different subspecies and much more of a challenge. They don't occur in anything like the numbers but that may be due to the lack of managed grouse moors over here. It used to be thought that these two offshoots of the arctic hare where the same species. The Irish hare very rarely turns white. In over 40 years I've only ever killed one pure white one and a handf
  15. I remember someone telling me many years ago about a visit he had made to a well known dog man in New Mexico. They were sat talking dogs in the guys mobile home when a shot rang out outside. The yank rolled across the floor and pulled a rifle out from under a sofa and threw it to his guest shouting, "cover me", and dived out the front door firing as he went.....! I could never be sure whether he had set the whole episode up to impress his visitor, or ....was it I who was being spun a yarn? If it was true then I can see why they feel the need to carry.
  16. It helps to remember the amount caught when the likes of Chalkey, Tommy Murray, Eddie Common and a load of others are congratulating you because your homebred sapling has caught more on the day than any of theirs, lol. Plus when you live in Northern Ireland and don't get the opportunity too often, (that was Willows one and only 4 hours excursion after whities), those times stand out. I'll always be grateful for the generosity of my friends from the mainland who have been so generous with their permission over the years.
  17. Goldie, my saluki bitch with pups by Max, (Smokey x Dancer) Willow and Bucko Willow at 14 months Willow in her first season taking 11 out of 11 whiteys Bigliks your dad was there that day, he may remember one spectacular, over the body pick-up which she made right in front of him.
  18. Might you be referring to the Magic bitch that Bigliks dad owned? She was by Kippers Cruiser out of a first cross bitch called Amber. Her littermates included Smokey and Elsie, ( one of the millenium six )
  19. Irish hares certainly can breed all year round although the spring and summer is most common. In the early 's I caught one on boxing day with two fully developed leverets inside which were still wriggling as I took the dead mother off my dog. I opened her up and reared the youngsters until they were the size of adult rabbits and then released them.
  20. There are going to be a lot of propaganda broadcasts in the run-up to the election. You don't think the timing is coincidence surely? Remember folks, half the lies they tell you aren't true
  21. I think you're right JD, just googled one very similar. Therefore I was right...I was mistaken!
  22. I thought at first that was a kudu, but I kudu been mistaken......
  23. This is the first cross Wheaten/grhound that I would recommend to anyone over here....an out and out fox slayer. Clever in the field and will jump anything. He even took a few hares when he was younger.
