  1. Dont stress, they will pick up bits and bobs as they go through life, my lot had an outbreak of fleas after being clear of them for three years. Spot on soon sorted that lot out. dietomacious earth is the business too.
  2. TOO TRUE You can have the fastest dog, the most committed dog BUT if they are injured they might as well be a shitsu.
  3. Breeding can play a part for sure, as can early entering and then exeperience can play a part. My eldest will now pull up on cover at night on the lamp, but then he had ran full tilt into a lamb creep feeder. In the daytime he knows that that lunge into cover is often successfull and he wont stop.
  4. Nice looking pup you have there fella.
  5. Just a mongrel collie really Loves his ferreting, though flying rabbits can throw him a bit......
  6. You can only catch what is in front of you, 30 or 1,000 is no indication of you more an indication of rabbits in your area. In fact if you have had the permission for a few seasons and you are still getting big numbers, you may find the permission getting shared around.... Like Ideation says get a cur that can mark. I hate it if I cant take a cur along - sometimes you have to eat shit and ferret without a dog to keep hold of good ground (if you dont someone else will). Nothing beats watching a ferreting cur work and saves picking up nets from empty holes
  7. Some stunning examples of collie crosses there, all a credit to their owners.
  8. There are a lot of dogs that go ferreting but not so many actual ferreting dogs. Some dogs just have an kack for it others never get it.
  9. Had a Taffy 3/4 bred that was a very useful dog, he dies a while back at the age of 12. Nowadays I ferret alongside someone with a hancok half cross beardie and that is a tidy little dog.
  10. Get a pup, if it is your first get a bitch (less pushy than a dog) dont get anything with too much collie in as gthey are not an ideal 1st dog. I am collie mad and would suggest a 3/4 frey 1/4 collie bitch. But dont listen to me. Look for a dog you like the look of and one that suits you. Get it as a pup and spend time with it. There is lots of advice on training and you are better off making your mistakes than having to live with someone elses. Good ferreting dogs are treasured and rarely sold. They would be given to someone trusted. Good luck
  11. Something with plenty of collie in it. You cant beat that collie brain for staying focused when nothing is happening but ready when it does. Speed doesn't make a ferreting dog
  12. Ahhh short grass, my dogs look daft lamping the sheep fields here. I would say you want something around 22-24 inch mark, lightly built. Personally I'd go for 3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie but anything along those lines will do you pround. Bitch pup from whippetxgrey put to a half cross collie or bedlington. Good luck with it, the ground you have can be tough going but also some fantastic sport.
  13. What are you aimimng to catch with the pups? That is what you need to be asking. You have a cracking looking bitch that is doing the business on rabbits be in ferreting or lamping. Why would you want to put a deer/grey over it? What will that mating give you? Heigh and speed? Do you need more height? Plus sounds like your bitch is quick enough. Only my opinion but if I wanted to end up with a rough coated rabbiting dog from your bitch I'd either use a bedlington terrier cross or try and find a nice and light built Bearded collie greyhound to use as a stud. I'd go for a straight half cro
  14. Well took the plunge and have picked up a scope, one question.......What mounts have you got yours set on? I bought some Hawke 30mm Highs but still doesnt clear the mag!
  15. Has anyone had any experience with these, if so what are they like??? Saw one at Kelmarsh and it seemed pretty good though eye relief would take some getting used too.
  16. Ask yourself what do you want from the pups, what does the bitch lack or what are her strong points. Look for a stuf dog to match her and compliment her. Also one that will give you the pups that you are after.
  17. The best things are simple, just stick with 3/4 greyhound 1/4 beardie. Get a bitch and it will do everything you want it to and wont lack for anything that you might think you need from another breed.
  18. Stopped a few weeks ago, did go out again as a favour to a farmer and it was as I thought it was going to be - a waste of time. I always say I finish each season when it becomes a chore and not a pleasure. Always seems to be about the same time each year - early march in this part of the world.

  20. I think you might get em for that
  21. All the best with your pup fella. Put the effort in and you'll have a great dog. I've seen plenty of great hancock dogs, so ignore certain replies. There are just as many useless lurchers that are supposedly bred by true lurchermen. If you dont think about what you are breeding and if the owners puts no effort into the pup it has little chance. At least with your pup you know what you are getting.
  22. Can you empty your PM inbox, been trying to send you a pm. Thanks

Still can't get a pm to you.
  24. No worries, like I've alwas said each to their own. All I do is ferret and I like a dog to have a bit of strength to it - I feel they ride the bumps and bangs a but better. I am not fortunate enough to have much pretty ferreting lol anyway not wanting to hijack the thread. My point was get a dog that suits you; afterall you are going to be working closely with it for a long time and ferreting dogs need time (experience) before they are really any good.
  25. not really, depends on various things, my main ferreting dog is 25.5 inches and weighs 31kg and he is an asset ferreting. The bitch I'm bringing on is 24 inches and 24 kilos and she isn't what you'd call stocky
