ratchermans first trip with the wires
snareman replied to woodga's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
moley you c@@t after all them nice wires i gave you ill have to have a nip over to your end that way ill be able to raid your shed next time you using those wires yet or are they just for show and you forgot a reciept when you need a hand just shout thanks moley for the warning , he was just wearing nothing but the apron was he, no wonder he was asking me to go down for a bit of snaring. -
duckwing is right the hoops are to near the pipe , you dont need nails or wire hammered into pole to guide the animal , as the diam. of the pole itself will suffice, as the squirrel will run dead centre along the surface of the pole right into the snare loop. the set up looks fine otherwise, but i think you should invite me, colin , and duckwing, down to sample all those succulent variety of nuts your feeding them, as all the squirrels will be coming from the neighbouring county also. take care .

ditchy, i would have left them hanging in the shed , imagine carrying a dozen of those just to catch a rabbit or two. just the look of it frightens me never mind a bagfull.

we could certainly do with a good strong humane rabbit trap micky, ones that have quality springs that will last a good few years , also to be able to by spare springs , when replacement is needed , like the american tappers can do , as these spring traps weaken after a few years and are not humane . the price we have to pay for traps over here is ridiculous , the american traps are quality and very reasonably priced, same with all their realtree stuff, gun, and ammo , here we are robbed to death , a thousand rounds of .222 ammo , 170 dollars = 85 quid , in UK 20 rounds about 15 quid, a thous

there was a guy showing the head keeper a few weeks ago trying one out, and he must have put to much gas into the burrow , when it was ignited he burned his jacket hands and singed his eyebrows , the head keeper phoned me to tell me about it as he had a good laugh about it , it seems a bit extreme to kill a few rabbits , the old ferret would have been better ,

yes there are many top quality snarers and trappers out there in US and CANADA i know as i have been going out there for 40 years , but they have their share of dumplings just like we have over here , but they are not any better at open trail snaring than the guys over here , and they certainly can,t snare rabbits in the professional manner that we can , as we are top of the tree at the pegged rabbit snaring. a woodland style rabbit snare would have suited them better than tying up with twine and trying to bush the snare in , and once again they have this donkey mentality setting with a tiny

steady m.t. get in the queue, the big fella is busy at the moment with mine , as woodga is keeping all his ash pegs to himself , greedy rascal. -

Modified Rate Trap - in action
snareman replied to Holdaway's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
holdaway, check that your pan is clearing the chin bar properly , and that the wood chin bar is not swelling with the wet weather , also check that the pan is clearing the sides of the mesh tunnel , so that it falls freely , and also what duck wing suggested , i spray all mine green , and what the hell the manufacturer made a bright yellow pan for beats me . i put the bait at the back of the spring to one side so that a rat or squirrel can,t reach in and take the bait , which can also happen in very rare occasions with the kania, therefore they are forced to go in and under the mesh to get th -

if you carry on like that ian, we will all soon have to go to the zoo to see one , ha ha. -
120-2 , yes the kill time was under four mins. i sent a fenn mark v1 out to canada , a few years back , it was said not to be strong enough to comply with stringent canadian trap law , as canada leads the world in humane trapping , they have a 120 size bodygrip trap out called an LDL with seriously powerfull springs to kill marten , i have one in my shed , the trappers voiced concern about the power of this little trap , as it could be a danger when setting in freezing conditions if it fired onto fingers or thumbs , but the killing time of the animal came first , seemingly before trapper saf

the steel wire does not go into the stops far enough , and pull of at times , i lost 8 foxes trying them, but resnared 6 of them in my own snares , was speaking to a keeper and he will not set them on the hill where red deer are as the same problems occur , the loops are to small on some of them , and they advertise a 33 inch loop now , big deal , and charge extra money . these snares can be made cheap as the hard steel bowden cable is half the price of aircraft cable . the steel eyes rust like hell, at the game fair a keeper said to me watch this , he put his foot into the loop of one of thes

what the hell do i need a bloody old trap for when ive got 2000 pegged wires, at my finger tips, talk sense laddie , but bring the pegs up, -
Well you must be really old then,i`m not a kid and don`t like being called one, and crayfish don`t suffer when you drop then straight into boiling water. GOD, designed the system , every day in life some creature or bird dies for another to live , nature is totally ruthless , any sign of weakness results in starvation and death when predators kill , and birds of prey kill they are anything but humane, they act on natural instinct , man on the other hand has the power to think , form solutions, and reason , therefore we as trappers try to be as humane as possible, the problem is the weak na

aye these geordie lads are worth of watching , see what he went away with from my hut the last time he was up here , woodga, and duckwing are far worse than peg and gun , and i thought he was bad , -
stubby, the big cheese don,t match up to the victor for quality and power, and the kill bar is weaker , you need to pull the sring prongs at the back , out straight and hammer in a couple panel pins in at the outside of each prong to keep them from sliding inwards into a V shape , your chin bar should be a half inch high , and pointed , not flat , chin bars can be made from galv. wire in the shape of a goal post , or a small length of any right angled metal, on the whole , i wouldn,t buy those big cheese , ive had them and in my opinion they are crap , as ditchy says phone the girl from kill

you seem to get this fat discolouration , due to the various types of herbage eaten also in severe hard winter weather when they are stripping alot of tree bark , hawthorne , ash , oak , and wild bushes, these harwoods have a lot of tannin in the bark .

its the same with the snaring M.T. the info up on this site can bring them up to frying speed very quickly, but they don,t have the years of real grounding behind them, the miles, the trial and error , thunder and lightning, rain running out your ass, sleet, frost , freezing hands , etc. we have had them on here before , a days course and they are instant experts , but for all the numpties there are , the genuine ones keep at as they are keen to learn. and the more people who learn to do it properly and more humanely the better.

I like a rabbit that has been feeding on mangles or sugar beet the meat tastes sweeter somehow.Years ago my grandpa told me never eat a rabbit that feeds on bracken ,because they will be bitter, wise advise , as eating bracken causes tumours in cattle and sheep .
-
woodga, i only eat rabbits from areas where pesticides are not used , woodland, estabiished grazing, or from the top of the surrounding bings, when snaring rabbits one time along a motorway banking where they fed along the roadside , there intestines seemed to be very dark and leathery looking , to much lead pollution along these roadsides due to the thousands of vehicles passing everyday.

thats how you are hardly catching any, because you are using shop bought snares , how many times have people been told on this site that these type of snares are pure shite, thats why woodga is getting big catches because he is using his own professionally made snares ,
