Dont use towels mate, they are cotton and much easier for ferrets ro get their claws stuck in the threads. Fleece is much better, i dont throw them away either, wash them every week. Just make sure you shake them before you put them in. And put washer on rinse afterwards or you will smell like a ferret lol

How's everyones ferrets coping in the weather
joe14 replied to pmatty77's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Mine are fine, they are all like polar bears, theyve got loads of fleece blankets in their bed box's, newspapers on the bottom, aswell as vet bed.. The buggers are probs warmer than me. -
 Merry Christmas to everyone on the forum! Hope you all have a good en!

Got enough hutch's there mate haha. Sure someone will have it mate, I would get some ply, give it a good coat of varnish and stick it on the bottom and stick some legs onnit. Or you could just give it a good coat of paint (nowt looks wrong with it there like) and stick it on ebay for collection. Or ask your local ferret rescue if they want it,

Need to have a run about also, burn some energy off. No point just taking him out of an hutch to handle he will want to be down and ferreting about first.

Thats why i said cat milk. Its lactose reduced mate. Give him lots of raw meat to pog him up, i find it fills them up more than biscuits. But make sure hes got food all the time.
-
What are you feeding them? Does he get out in a run daily? What i would do is give them cat milk etc, whilst hes lappin it up, stroke him. Put some olive oil on your knuckles (clench your fist so he cant gwt grip). Let him lick that, if he goes to bite shout NO, take your hand away and re offer. He will learn that bitin = no treat. Sit on the floor and feed him tiny bits of meat, let him come to you.DONT hit, tap, flick. No need, positive methods mate. And dont act nervous or pull your hand away if he bites push your hand further in his mouth.

The one that chris has got has got plastic floors so should be fine. Best way to make your hutch's last is paint em, lino the floors abit up the side and use littetrays in them. That way no pee gets to the wood. And keep them covered back and sides with a tarp.

I build my run onto the bottom two doors, put some hooks onto the side so the run can be pulled away from the hutch. I let them in it all day, lock them in the hutch at night. On the top floor of the hutch I made the ramp hole smaller so they had more floor space, dont know about the one you have but mine had big square cut out. Also mate put some bolts on them trays that slide out cos if they come away the ferrets will be out of the bottom. I made the hole for the bed box smaller as its too big for ferrets, keeps them warmer.

They will be bored in there mate, they need to get out for a run about, either round garden, kitchen or shed. You can put an hammock on the top floor, just screw 4 cup hooks and fasten them that way its easy. I built a run onto the bottom of mine, gives em loads more space. Hope this helps.

Nice ferret. And just as i was about to say NO cat food haha. I bloody hate it when people feed that LOL. He doesnt look fat to me. They will put on weight and winter coat at this time of the year its normal. mine are like polar bears.

I would paint it mate, the wood doesnt last two mins if not.

Sad when they go. You get attached to the little buggers. But least he went in his sleep i gues, best way.

No but if you dont want to make one you could just buy avairy panels off ebay.

In summer I give them dry through day and feed them their meat at night when its cooler.. Take any out they havnt eaten next morning. I also use the sticky fly papers around hutch's but you can use net curtains aswell over mesh or proper fly screen, staple it to the frame of the doors. Another thing is to make sure their cleaned regular, I clean mine twice a day in the summer and i dont realy have a problem.

Is this a piss take? Ferrets cant digest fruit, and theyre lactose intolerant (they cant digest the sugar found in normal milk) By feeding foods you have mentioned you are damaging your ferrets digestive system. I give mine raw chicken wings, rabbit, pheasant, mince, livers, eggs, lactofree milk. Aswell as their dry food. Surley folks can afford a bag of dry food or a box of wings. It just makes me wonder lol, i have about 20kg of dry in the garage and one tray in the freezer full of raw meat. You will probs notice when feeding the bread and milk etc they have diahrea which realy

Glad the ferret is ok. One of my old ferrets as got a tumour i knew what it was but still took him to vet for my peice of mind. Nothing they can do, just make sure hes comfortable whilst hes here, hes nearly 10.

Ive always hand fed my bitey ones little buts of raw mear every morning. But you cant expect to hold ferrets still for ages without them wriggling or scratching they are ferrets not guinea pigs. They will come to you if you sit on the floor and play with them they will learn to trust you more.
-
Ban ferret muzzles i hate the f*****g idea.
-
Get them spayed and theyre sorted for life. Much cheaper in long run also.
-
They will eat more in winter, give them chicken wings, cheap fatty mince. Dont be skinny with the food either as they do tend to eat much more. You can also give them mill (whole lactofree milk) which is good for putting abit of weight on them.

Forgot to add best to handle her when shes had a belly full of meat andshes full up. She also needs torun energy off,sit on the floor and let her come to you, give her small bits of meat.
-
Its not the bloody ferrets fault it doesnt know not to bite, blame the twat that bred it and obviously havnt spent much time with them. Do not flick or hit her. She needs to think of hands as positive, give her cat milk and stroke her whilst shes lappin it up. Let her lick olive oil off your knuckles, clench your fist, if she goes to bite shout no and gently push your finger into her mouth. Re offer again eventually she will learn that biting = no treat.
