  1. Hancock may not work all his dogs but he gets plenty of feedback from the people that have bought pups from him.His Greyhounds are usually ex track dogs and his original collies have all been purchased from generations of proven workers. To be honest if you mated anything to a sighthound it would work given the chance to do so.
  2. Not this boring old knock Hancock shit again, you lot should get out and work your dogs more. If you want a genuine collie cross that is what the breeder says it is then theres nothing wrong with buying from Hancock,it will be what he says it is. If you pick up your pup @ 8 weeks then the socialising etc is up to you.The Beardie crosses have better, tougher feet, skin etc than the straight Border crosses. Its all down to the person on the other end of the lead, don't knock them until you have tried one.
  3. You can put a small dog in a big hole but you can't put a big dog in a small hole, thats my rule of thumb.I was told that by an old hunt terrierman years ago and it certainly stands true.I have seen far too many big dogs that just can't get to their fox.
  4. DITTO Shamo each to their own and good hunting to you As you said what suits one man won't always suit another.I have seen good and bad of all breeds over the years.Personally as a terrierman I admire any terrier that does the job regardless of its breed, strain, colour etc.I think a lot of people knock certain dogs just because of their name/breed,but all that matters to me is that they do their job to ground. P.S. I know you didn't say the offer still stands.I was saying that the offer to show you the bitch work still stands.(sorry my poor english).
  5. Shamo you tell me,the offer still stands,The Plummer is not mine it's a mates. You asked to see one work and my mate has offered but you declined saying that you have taken people out with Plummers from this thread but they just wanted a day out on your land.Who were they?
  6. I pm'd Shamo and offerd to show him my mates old bitch work but he has declined the offer.I hope that you don't mind me posting this Shamo,I'm not putting it up to stir you up just to put the record straight in defence of the good Plummers that I have seen to ground.
  7. Rabbit catcher I think the pic tells the story and I can assure you that it is a genuine post.I will tell my mate that you said he looks well worked lol. To be honest I don't like to post too much about our goings on,I just think it pays to keep a bit conservative,we have nothing to prove to anyone. I'm just saying that all the Plummers that have been local to me and some not so local, that I have seen work have all made very good earth dogs on fox.I don't want to be involved in any of the pathetic slanging matches about Plummers or Hancock dogs.Years ago people were slagging off Plummer terr
  8. Rabbit catcher I don't understand your reply
  9. I hope she recovers quickly for you Jack I have one recuperating myself, its an occupational hazard.
  10. Posting for a mate.Went up to a keepers place a week or so back and dug this game bird thief with my mates old Plummer bitch. We dug to her at a good 10 foot. This bitch is about 10 1/2 years of age and is still 100% reliable on fox.I have seen this bitch and her mother find in earths that other terriers have failed in on the day. These two bitches are/were as good as any earth dog on fox.If you get a Plummer from the right lineage and enter it correctly it will do the job as good as any other terrier.
  11. I have seen the pure Wheatens on the job there is nothing to come near them, they have all the qualities that I would like in a lurcher. They have the will to win, good coat, body, stamina excellent conformation, good tight feet and above all courage and intelligence. I have always been amazed at the intelligence level and how quick the Wheaten lurchers pick things up. Cheers Staffy.
  12. The 3/4 that I was talking about was back in 97.I won't be parting with the first cross, like I said he hasn't opened up at all,I just heard a slight whine when he was right up on it and it was jinking. The main thing is that he caught it so will give him confidence.I will be holding him off until he matures. He is showing a lot of promise marking earths and ragging other dead, shot quarry. The prey drive of these pups has to be seen to be believed. He chases birds has dived into a river after duck and killed a squirrel that a young terrier caught.
  13. Staffy the pups looking great. You say that all three have taken rabbits on the lamp and ferreting. What age did he start them off?and have any of them opened up. I once had a 3/4 Greyhound 1/4 Wheaten.I started him off at about 10 1/2 months he had taken 35 rabbits 1 hare 4 deer and 12 foxes. Then for no explainable reason started to open up when run on fox and deer. This was several years ago.I let him go to a good home. I now have a 7 month old first cross Wheaten greyhound. We did take him ferreting over Christmas and let him have a run which he caught after a good course. But just before h
  14. I don't have a 1stx but a mate of mine does and it is a very good dog.It catches a lot of its rabbits using its brains it does a lot of stalking down the beam, thus saving energy.Thats what collies x's do.In my experience any dog with any amount of collie in its makeup soon starts doing this. I do however own a 3/8 5/8 and this I feel is the better x.You have more speed than the 1stx,more stamina than the 3/4,also keeping the iron hard feet etc.You really get the best of both worlds. In my experience all collie x's with time start to decide if they can or can't catch that rabbit sat near the
  15. Koru A 3/8x5/8 has 1/8 more greyhound so on paper should be a tad faster than a 1stx.Dare I say it and I really can't be bothered to get into this age old arguement, but Hancock breeds the most level litters of 3/8 5/8 that I know of because he uses a reverse 3/4 bred stud dog to a greyhound. Therefore taking away the gamble of litter wastage. If you put a 1st x to a 3/4 to produce 3/8 5/8's you end up with a gamble as the litter will be very uneven. In my opinion I would go for a 3/8 5/8 as it is in between a 1stx and a 3/4.You get a very nice robust type of dog that will get good at whatever
  16. I personally keep all mine seperate.I have always gone by a simple little rule, kennel three bury one.
  17. I used to own a 3/4 Greyhound 1/4 Wheaten several years back.He stood around about 24 to the shoulder but I think he was quite small for a 3/4.I can honestly say that he was one of the most tractable lurchers that I have owned you would only need to show him something once or twice where quarry was concerned and he wouldn't forget it.He would also take all legal quarry.I find the Wheaten crosses to be a very intelligent cross that gives their all, very good on the lamp. Keep us posted if your mate gets his pup.
  18. He's coming along nicely Elmer, your doing a grand job with him. Oh and nice camera work
  19. All the pups in the litter were nearly identical, all black the colour of the dam and all broken coated, but getting rougher as they're growing. The sire was a working Wheaten dog brought over from Ireland, and the dam a good coursing Greyhound that has won several stakes. As the Wheaten crosses are more popular of late with a few litters appearing for sale there must be several people with Wheaten crosses now,so come on don't be shy lets see some pics of these cracking little beasts.
  20. Heres a few shots of his brother, and I thought you knew how to post pics lol.
  21. Grubygrafter,I thought we may see Ozzy on here, how is he coming on?Has he bumped into anything sharp yet.............?
  22. Sorry to hear of your loss JD,it's always the ones that give 110%.Chin up mate.
  23. Great thread, there must be more people with Wheaten crosses now,due to the amount of pups been bred in the last year or so.Can we see more pics etc. Ozzy is looking good has he bumped into anything sharp yet?
