  1. Now let me think here !! Rich is the river that runs down through Whitby called the Esk ?? ive fished the said river but iam afraid only by rod and line!! If what i was told is right its the only river in the district that takes the Salmon/Trout,,, disregarding i may add the wee burns that run into the sea!!! Ive fond memorys of the area and no doubt i will pay that lovely part of the Country a visit again in the near future ,,,, REGARDS..
  2. Na mate enough fish in the sea for everyone , using 4 1/2" mesh Now then its foolish to try and pull the wool over your Mentors eyes!! them fish in the picture dont come from any ordinary sea!!!
  3. NICE WEE BAG THERE jOE ,, now you would'nt surely be poaching MY SHOTS now would you??
  4. Went out to fish last nights Tide with the Gill Net,, much better result! looks like the run is now on..
  5. The net in the picture is worked on the Beech,, i prefer to work Trammels for River Netting..
  6. Went out with the Gill Net last night to check if the Sea Trout run is on,, as you can see in the picture only four Trout and four Mullet Gilled in the meshes,, who knows what the next tide may yield?
  7. before you spend your hard earned cash!! is it actually HEMP that you are buying ?? these days Hemp twine is a thing off the past!!! i consider myself as a twine Tart LOL..
  8. So rabbits caught in a net in the hours of darkness dont struggle?? !! i give up !! you and yours stick to your rabbit friendly 5" mesh nets!!! ...
  9. watch this space Mate regarding square meshed nets
  10. A 5" full mesh is in no way a killing net for Rabbits,, and i cant see the oldschool of years gone by useing sutch a mesh size,, after all the longnet in the past was the bread earner for a lot of guys, it put food and cash on the table ,, !! personally i cant see the point in setting a net or nets of a 5" mesh for a Bunny or two and i doubt it very much if the longnetters of years gone by would use such a mesh size!!! 4 1/2" mesh max for a good killing net!! depending on the material the net is or has been constructed off!!! then again what the fek do i know ?? iam new to this netting game
  11. Well heres my tuppence worth regarding mesh sizes, imo a 5" mesh is a little to big for a rabbit net,,!! sure it will hold the odd Bunny but that size of mesh would be more suited to a Hare or Two,, Now iam getting personal here on past experience regarding mesh sizes for Rabbits,, You have got to take into consideration the type of twine thats on offer,, I.E. a nice 3ply Hemp twined net will suffice as a 4ply net !!! made up in a 4 1/2 " mesh will kill no problem!! why you may ask ?? becuse there is no stretch in natuarall fibres,,!! know if you want to get into great detail regarding t
  12. Just a few words here to thank Molcatcher and his Family for a great week, the hospitality was second to none,, it was a dam shame that the week went in so quickly.. It was good to see at first hand the basket method being put to use,, very smooth i may add, ,, Molecatcher sure knows his stuff . On the day before our departure we were out setting the mole traps on one of the big Sporting Estates that Molcatcher works when this Gent of a Man handed me a departing gift,, a quality knife boxed and all with the following poem..
  13. Iam with you on that one Crow,, its foolish to penny pinch on be it purse or long nets !! if you need a quality net/ nets , the catch rate and the ease of handling of a hand made net will soon will put the machine nets to the grave!! dont get me wrong the machine made nets have there place in the rabbit catchers bag ,, personally i still use them this day and age but the m/c made nets i have are of good quality compared to the shit thats doing the rounds these days !! long net wise these days machine made nets are cheap and efective!! but the life span on these types of nets are limited to t
  14. What type of netting is it ?? i.e 4z , 6z,, 10z, colour,, ?? ive had a few p.m's from other lads regarding poor quality purse nets and longnets ?? the £££'s come before quality these days iam afraid !! what has happened to good old fashioned gear at a reasonable price ??......
  15. Correct Lamper, it aint a big issue regarding the mesh size,, but if iam knitting a net of a 4" mesh this method will make all your meshes 4"" mesh throughtout the net,, as i said iam a fussy Bugger when it comes to the making and setting of nets,, aint i an old fashioned bugger??? regards
  16. Thats another topic !! watch this space,,
  17. same here,, get your poles out for the boys........
  18. Well Tomo if your a fussy bugger like myself its the neatest way to start of any net,, if you knit on to a ring or a loop of twine the first row of meshes will be of a bigger mesh size due to the clove hitch!!! but hay it aint a big deal!! make your first row of meshes with a board an 1/8 " of an inch smaller than your intended mesh size,,,, I agree with your comment, its a hard one to explain but any netmaker worth his salt should be able to get the jest of which i posted!! as i posted its just another way to start of a net,,, THERES NO SENSE IN KNITTING ON TO A RING, THEN HAVING TO CUT THE
  19. Hopefully this seasons grafter,,,,,,,,,,,
  20. IM AFRAID, I HAD TO POSTPONE TILL NEXT SAT !!!
  21. Thats the best way imo to start of a longnet,, come to think of it any net,, provideing you require the depht of the net at the start...... REGARDS Nice and neat OLT,, theres no need for a ring or a loop of twine to start of a net ,,,,, its another option as you know in the starting off a net be it rabbit or (if you have the balls any type off net )..knot..knot....knot.... Aint it a labour off love regards..
  22. heres another option in starting a net,, make a loop to attach to a hook, and another loop the bridth of your board now take your board and needle and knit a mesh into the loop you made the bredth of your board,, keep nitting mesh for mesh untill you have the depth you require( make a string of meshes 30 long for a net of 15 mesh deep once you have knitted the meshes you require its time to hook the meshes up once you have the meshes on the hook and your finger tye the meshes that you ha
