ferreting on a sunny but cold winters day
FERRETBOY replied to FERRETBOY's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
it certinly is great weather to be out in moletrapper, all day there was a lovely sun out but with there being of alot of young bunnys already i think we'll have to soon start slowing things down a little.but the land owner wants us to have a look at some other parts so we could be doing a little all year round.yes jultaylor1972 i well enjoyed it as i was once again working saturday .yes chris dad and w.h had a few digs between them with the deepist being 4ft which dad was glad to break through ,top marks for the mrk 3 ferret finder spot on everytime.how the ferrets doing w.h has he started ma -
went ferreting today with my dad and world.hunters ,we intended on ferreting a long hedge row but dad just made sure it was alright with the land owner first whilst me and w.h laid about 7 nets on one side.when dad came back we carried on netting up on the other side of the hedge.we did the hedge in 4 sections breaking it up with the two stop nets.pushing the pegs in was a nightmare but about 40 purse nets were ready for rabbits so my and w.h jills were entered.only minutes and we had a bolt into a purse net, then a rabbit came to the entrance of a hole but turned back on itself down into the

i would use 12mm exterior ply screwed and glued to a 38mm x 22mm frame work or 18mm exterior ply glued and screwed together using no frame work .stay away from mdf mate its no good for hutches especially as it will soak up moisture and swell plus they use famalderide in it and it lets of fumes if not sealed so not very good for the poor old ferret. good hunting rew

me and dad did abit of ferreting today ,the first two warrens we did are in a grass paddock and we decided to see if we could get any bolters for ,fly but it was not to be as these didnt produce anything.the next warren we had one bolt into the stop net but missed two which didnt tangle up well enough because of the amount of twigs and sticks tangled in the 10yrds of webbing .we had a quick bolt into the purse net out of the next warren we ferreted and then the land owner came over for a chat and wants us to see to some more hedge rows but just before he left we had another tangle up in pur

thanks for the reply lads even if they are off topic , but sorry my sister is taken lol.world.hunters we should deffinatley sort something out because like i said in my last thread theres enough to give three or four dogs some real hard work only wish fly was older because i am trying to limit the amount of runs she has with her still being young. Irish lurcher fly,s dam is whippet x greyhound and her sire is 1/2 greyhound x 1/4 whippet x 1/8 collie x 1/8 deerhound breeze and lamper12 ,fly is nearly 11 months , yes frank she is doing very well imo and i couldnt ask for much else from her

went lamping again last night this time my mate tagged along and bramble also joined me and fly.i decided to have a little scan over a hedge on a field i saw a few rabbits the other night ,once again there was 4 or 5 rabbits with one making its way accross the field towards some crop they keep for the pheasants so bramble was put through the hedge and she quickly sighted it ,a nice little course followed and bramble put the first rabbit the bag.the next rabbit i ran both dogs but this one made it to safety.my mate shot a hare and accidently let go of bramble who tried to retrieve it ,it ran o

went lamping just me and fly as my mate couldnt make it ,there was a few bunnys out but most of this land was covered with hares,i started to become annoyed as i was walking out to a red eye squatting in the grass to find it was yet again another hare and im pretty sure you could have gave three dogs some hard graft with the amount of hares there were if it was still legal like.fly still managed to pick up three rabbits and the third being a squatter which she took before it had any chance to move and they were all brought back to about 10ft away.will be back out this wednesday with bramble

im having a little trouble with my pups as there stooles are very white and crumbly like there is to much calcium in there diet and fern deffinatley is finding it hard to pass her pooh like shes constipated.can anyone help as it just isnt right.heres there diet if it helps. they have 1lb of mince chicken in the morning each about 8 -9 oclock then they have 1/2 lb of mince chicken each in the afternoon about 6 ish .with one of the two meals they will have a whole carrot ,apple ,tomato and brockely ,most days that is.the next day is the same but except they have tripe mince instead of chicken.

had another look out on the lamp with fern last night at the same place i took fly the other night next to the train line.still a full moon but the wind was blowing ok for me.first few fields i didnt see any bunnys but plenty of hares, but i wasnt interested with the hares as the pups are still only 10months .so across onto the other side of the train track in front of the farm house ,had a quick scan with the lamp and i spotted a rabbit sqautting so of goes the lamp as i made my way out to it with fern ready on slip. then back on with the lamp and the rabbit starts making a run for it back to

thanks guys .the thing about this place is that theres a public path so they isnt much point going earlier as u still get a few dog walkers and theres the farm house on the other side of the train track.its the place i went with witton and world hunters a few weeks back bushing hares tomo you know the place. frank i was maybe abit eager taking her out so early after the oil incident ,i was abit scared that night with her choking on her tongue and all but shes fine now. good hunting rew

Decided to have a look out last night near a train track, this was the first time i have ever lamped these fields and wasn't really expecting to see much .there wasn't much wind and the sky was pretty light so I was very surprised to see a couple bunnies sitting out. With fly on slip I walked out to the squatting rabbit, it started to move so I slipped fly and straight to it she went and struck but the rabbit, bunny hoped over the top of her and was heading for the train line .she was on it but just didn't commit a strike and the rabbit made it to safety into one of the warrens on the bankin

nice one fezz one is better than none ,i also went out last night and only bagged the one with my dads young bitch fern as fly is recovering after drinking some oil which had come out of one of the drains,it was like she was high then fell and started choking on her tongue ,very scarey but shes fine now after being put on a drip.well done again keepthem coming ,how old are them two youngsters now. good hunting rew

me and dad went fererting again yesterday which was pretty hard going .the weather was perfect and the final bag was 8 in total but we missed five or six due to the hedgerow being pretty thick in most places making netting up impossible.we caught 3 rabbits in purse nets,1 in the stop net,dad dug 2 out ,fly caught 1 which made a run for it but was ampered by the fence and fern took 1 about 6 foot from the hole.we then went to a section of hedge which was really dense ,we netted 4 holes we could get to but dad left one open at the base of a bush because he said he couldnt get to it ,i think he c
