Obviously its a bit of a wild statement.......what i mean apart from a great work ethic and dedication theres nothing you need to be born with( natural talent ) to make a great cyclist.......yes i feel pretty much anyone with the correct mindset and physical capability could reach the top of that sport....but the reality is that win at all costs mentality is very rare. Tomo would you accept barefoot beech football as an olympic sport ?........neither would i so for that reason i dont accept beech volleyball but yes id accept normal volleyball as a sport........sailing surely is reliant on the elements/weather as much as the boat itself............im sure its great fun and challenging.....but not a sport for me.

I like your views on this subject i totally agree as regards genetics hence,Phil Taylor was born a darts player.....Cavendish wasnt necessarily born a cyclist....no matter how hard Phil Taylor worked if he wasnt born with that talent he wouldnt of reached the top.....Cavendish could reach the top regardless of talent and thats my sticky point about cycling. Yes people are running faster,jumping higher etc.......but not because a new type of sythetic kevlar or some other material has been developed ....swimmers are going faster due to physical improvements in sports science/nutrition etc etc.

Id go as far as to say half of the sports we see at the Olympics next year are not really sports.......beech volleyball,sailing,bmx,mountain biking as a few examples................and the best one of all, Equestrian Dressage....what the f**k has that got to do with sport

Fitness is only one quality or requirement within sport............look at Phil Taylor,in my opinion if you accept darts as a sport we have the most succesful sportsman in world sport !.......ever !....nobody could ever doubt the will to win,technique,skill or competetive spirit of Phil Taylor and for me it takes more requirements to be a darts world champion than it does to be a cycling world champion.......i think

errrr now let me think.....a cyclist today will be doing faster times than a cyclist of 30 years ago....due to todays technology......hence the entire " sport " is governed by events nothing to do with sport ie technological research....... obviously im being a bit facetious about it ( thats a good word for me im pretty sure it does exist )..................i have respect and admiration for any athlete who reaches the top of their game....though i do think theres different levels of pureness with sports.

Well yes it was said somewhat tongue in cheek I look at the qualities a sportsman needs to be succesful......of which theres loads.....if a sport only needs 1 or 2 of them i fail to see how they can be classed as pure as a sport that needs them all.................basically cycling is something virtually any human being could become the best at with enough work put in......that theory doesnt apply to sports which require natural flair or ability.........darts requires no physical fitness but you couldnt suddenly decide one day your going to be the best at it without a huge amount of talent/s

Id say darts or archery is a lesser sport no way could they be regarded as sports in the pureness of footie/boxing/rugby etc

Throwing a rolled up paper ball into a bin is a competetive activity if its against an opponent...............but its still not a sport.

Tomo running or swimming is not relying on hi tech equipment.......i accept cycling is a sport of sorts but not a pure sport. Theres plenty of things thats classed as sport that isnt strictly sport......... For me pure sport in its highest form requires every quality a competitor needs from skill to natural ability to fitness and endurance......id class footie,boxing,rugby,cricket,athletics as examples of pure sports....................cycling,motor racing,horse racing etc all as lesser sports.......then things like archery ....which although an olympic sport..........i dont know what that

Im sure theres plenty of skill in motorbike racing but i wouldnt really call that a pure sport either........exactly what is the skill to riding a bike anyway.....riding it fast for a long distance is impressive in itself but skillful

Couldnt agree more......ive had the conversation many times East London and Liverpool have a lot in common and are very similar areas.......apart from the fact we have a better football team of course You could add Alan Rudkin,Joey Singleton,Holligan to that list................didnt Dick Tiger live in Liverpool as well.

No cant deny the boys done good and deserves everything he gets................not that i know much about cycling............but for me,a proper sport must require skill as well as fitness...............would it be too harsh to say anyone could be a cyclist if they had the determination and drive...............in other words it doesnt take any skills you were born with to be a cyclist...........id actually say darts is more of a sport than cycling it takes natural skill ! ....................... im not sure if ive convinced myself or not

Well doesnt that sum it up then......Bethnal Green is not a town or a city its a small little district among the 5% most deprived areas in the uk.......yet it has still produced more British European and World champions in 1 street than the whole of Hartlepool !.......
