When you have fought 200 fights over a 25 year career against the absolute best from the generations often fighting 2 or 3 fights per month........you tend to lose the odd fight. Its always difficult comparing the different eras,i love speaking to the ol boys who were around during that era and remember Robinson.....ive never heard any of them say Robinson wasnt the best middleweight of all time.
  2. Theoretically Tomo yes....but as we know it doesnt work out like that.......genetically west african blacks tend to dominate in sprinting....east african blacks tend to dominate in long distance running..................likewise with something like weightlifting being dominated by whites.......so to an extent sport is dictated by genetics......but what im getting at with cycling, there is no real genetic reason or skills/talent reason why virtually anyone with the right mindset could not reach the top........ronnie o sullivan trains very little yet continues to be one of the best snooker player
  3. Really.........i sometimes think mummy didnt give you enough attention as a youngster........but im not rude about it am i I say again this " if you compete against somebody its a sport " theory is complete nonsense......i used to have throw the ball in the bucket competitions with my son, thats not a sport either......
  4. Exactly !!......so if thats what can be achieved with little natural skill/talent in sport that requires skill/talent......think how far that same work rate and practise could take somebody in a sport that doesnt require any ..................last i looked riding a bike doesnt require any real skills as such......i accept theres a lot more to it than just riding a bike the way a kid rides round the park.......but its still riding a bike, just quickly and for a long time....................i fail to see the natural born talent thats required to be a top cyclist that doesnt come under the banner
  5. At my age of course not........as a younger man give me a reason why not ?..........what is it that a cyclist has that the rest of the athletic population doesnt have ?

Kevin Finnegan fought Hagler twice and was stopped twice.................he later lost a decision to Sibson and went on record saying Tony Sibson hit him harder than anybody ever had.....said " it was like getting a concrete fence post rammed in your face "....or words to that effect.
  7. Tomo football, rugby, cricket etc etc is played on grass because it gives the truest run of a ball/can be played at the highest level/just plain sensible...............to play any of these sports on a beech for any reason other than having a laugh is pointless in my opinion......same go,s for volleyball......the only difference sand makes is a bit of a hindrance under foot i just cant see the point of it as a competetive sport if its exactly the same sport thats played on a hard court. Plenty of younsters in certain countries grow up playing footie on beeches, they dont make an olympic sport of

You really think Hagler won that fight Tomo......must have had the conversation a hundred times over the years ive never met more than a handful of folk who thought Hagler won......if i remember right i had Leonard winning 9 rounds to 3...or maybe 8 to 4 i forget now......a clear win anyway.......we all see fights different though

Only need to look at the state of the fat b*****d dogs he had and listen to the story his trainer told about the labrador to understand the type Mcllellen was as regards dogs.....similar to the dopey little pakis hanging about on council estates chucking 2 dogs together and then calling it dog matching !

You gotta respect Froch he,s a fighter from the heart i love fighters who put it on the line and dont fear a loss........still needs to take it one step at a time though if he loses the first one the rest will come to nothing........but i admire his attitude to the game.

Now theres something i couldnt disagree on.....at one stage it looked like Hagler would never get past the top contender stage .....ripped off in his first title challenge, craftily crept up on by Leonard............ wouldnt say he was the best middleweight of all time though id put Carlos Monzon and Ray Robinson way out in front of Hagler.
  12. Because without a peak conditioned million pound horse......you dont have a sport.............likewise motor racing, without a state of the art million pound car you dont have a sport...... Whereas anyone with a bat and a ball......a football.....2 boxing gloves.....a rugby ball etc etc you still have a sport in its purest form. Its like this business with goal line technology in footie,i dont want it......i agree with uefa in that sport should be the same at every level or you just dilute the sport itself.... Im not saying im right it just suits my way of thinking

Stone me son i didnt have a bet on the fight i just described how i saw Froch winning and how i saw Froch losing.....i didnt pick a winner either way..........whats this lets create an argument out of nothing......i usually bite, but this time i wont ta ta champ.
  14. They,re all out of my hands anyway now i handed them down to my son a few years back............the arse of it is he dont realise the sentimental value they hold they,re just something stuck away with the promise he,ll hand them down to his kids. Have you tried the proper boxing memorabilia shops or auctions i know you would have to pay a bit more but could be worth a try if your just collecting them and dont need to make a profit as such.
  15. Would love to help mate but the ol fella would chop my nuts off.....he made us promise it would be one of them hand down through the generations things....they,ll be worth fortunes when im dead Best of luck in your search.
  16. I feel your pain sir........the " save York Hall " petition went on a long time and only by the skin of our teeth is it still there........many fighters over the years who have fought in the big worldwide venues of Vegas and suchlike have said it still dont compare to the atmosphere on a Thursday night in the York Hall. Seems a hard task holding onto traditions these days sadly.
  17. Yes but its still not man made.......like a lighter front wheel or more aerodynamic hat for instance
  18. Obviously its a bit of a wild statement.......what i mean apart from a great work ethic and dedication theres nothing you need to be born with( natural talent ) to make a great cyclist.......yes i feel pretty much anyone with the correct mindset and physical capability could reach the top of that sport....but the reality is that win at all costs mentality is very rare. You say about putting in as much effort but lacking that vital ingredient......but what is that ingredient ? its not skill/talent.........so all it can really be is either a physical or mental attribute........i mean how much i
  19. ah right ok.....i seemed to have something tucked away in the back of my mind about Tiger being from Liverpool....but couldnt imagine him with a scouse accent
  20. Tomo would you accept barefoot beech football as an olympic sport ?........neither would i so for that reason i dont accept beech volleyball but yes id accept normal volleyball as a sport........sailing surely is reliant on the elements/weather as much as the boat itself............im sure its great fun and challenging.....but not a sport for me.
  21. I like your views on this subject i totally agree as regards genetics hence,Phil Taylor was born a darts player.....Cavendish wasnt necessarily born a cyclist....no matter how hard Phil Taylor worked if he wasnt born with that talent he wouldnt of reached the top.....Cavendish could reach the top regardless of talent and thats my sticky point about cycling. Yes people are running faster, jumping higher etc.......but not because a new type of sythetic kevlar or some other material has been developed ....swimmers are going faster due to physical improvements in sports science/nutrition etc etc.
  22. Id go as far as to say half of the sports we see at the Olympics next year are not really sports.......beech volleyball, sailing, bmx, mountain biking as a few examples................and the best one of all, Equestrian Dressage....what the f**k has that got to do with sport
  23. Fitness is only one quality or requirement within sport............look at Phil Taylor,in my opinion if you accept darts as a sport we have the most succesful sportsman in world sport !.......ever !....nobody could ever doubt the will to win, technique, skill or competetive spirit of Phil Taylor and for me it takes more requirements to be a darts world champion than it does to be a cycling world champion.......i think
  24. errrr now let me think.....a cyclist today will be doing faster times than a cyclist of 30 years ago....due to todays technology......hence the entire " sport " is governed by events nothing to do with sport ie technological research....... obviously im being a bit facetious about it ( thats a good word for me im pretty sure it does exist )..................i have respect and admiration for any athlete who reaches the top of their game....though i do think theres different levels of pureness with sports.
  25. Well yes it was said somewhat tongue in cheek I look at the qualities a sportsman needs to be succesful......of which theres loads.....if a sport only needs 1 or 2 of them i fail to see how they can be classed as pure as a sport that needs them all.................basically cycling is something virtually any human being could become the best at with enough work put in......that theory doesnt apply to sports which require natural flair or ability.........darts requires no physical fitness but you couldnt suddenly decide one day your going to be the best at it without a huge amount of talent/s
