  1. Having never seen one up close, they do look like awesome beasts, I'm amazed a dog could pull one singlehanded, must of been a sight to see and some amazing sport. I envy you guys!!!
  2. I only ever saw Roe run during the day and only one a month so not exactly a test for a dog (you couldn't get much more in the freezer!) cracking quarry for the chase but once caught they didn't exactly put up much of a fight? so the dog just needed to be fast enough to catch and anchor down until you got there. Did Fallow/Sika/Red fight back or just keep trying to pull away from the dog? I'd guess for deer of this size you would of needed a dog with a bit of brains (collie x) to pull or knock them over so they can't move off again or just with the weight (deerhoundX) to anchor it? It's a
  3. Some stunning photos Mag, Unusual to see an all white ferret with black eyes.
  4. Would you consider a swap for a proven working Bitch??? she is a bit marked up but has worked for most of her life so knows her job well, many a time weve found her prey dead under her. I Just need some fresh blood to liven the old girls up! Your welcome to a trial first!
  5. I hope you can get out working it regularly or your going to end up with a headache! A lot of people say their too much for most earth work and their all work, no play so you won't get a moments peace from it! I'm sure some of the guys in Europe can give you a heads up on them. Pats are usually game enough surely?? why would you need to cross it to a Jaqd? Can I ask how much it's costing you? even if the dog was free it must still cost a fair bit for transport, quarantine etc. All the best with the dog.
  6. Thank you Dave, I usually take the cap off once in the fields then it doesn't go back on again until I'm ready to leave. It's a metal screw thread type so makes a fair noise when being screwed on or off, so just isn't practical to use it during a lamping session.
  7. If the Gardai refuse to get involved then return the favour to the gun club when they park up and Give out far worse than you get, most can give it out when they don't expect it back. Mind you I thought the Gardai were pretty hot on firearms offences? shooting a car window out is pretty serious. If the Farmers taking the dogs though I'd guess the guys didn't have permission to run on that land??? so they should of known the risk of running their dogs.
  8. I'd like to see Harry Hill split them up!
  9. I guessed it would damage the tube. Like I said it is a hassle sometimes getting it in your pocket out of the way then getting the lamp on but better safe than sorry. Thank you John, All the best Luke.
  10. I'm currently using a cheapy Bresser Nightvision monocule from Lidl's when out with the dog to spot Rabbits at a distance rather than lamping the field. At the moment I use it to spot a Rabbit then turn it off and put it in my pocket before turning the lamp on(as you can guess this takes a little while). When I turn it off you can still see through it for a few minutes before it dims and then goes black. I know strong light source's will damage the tube inside but is this only whilst it's turned on? can I turn it off then immiediatly turn the Lamp on? or am I best putting it in my pocket away
  11. 30 to the Gallon!!! christ, I only get about 26 mpg in my Volvo!!!
  12. Cracking read, thank you for sharing it. Sounds like the girls enjoy as much as you? your a lucky fella to be able to get out with your daughters, most wouldn't even consider going let alone doing the coup de grace on a toothed animaleven if the dogs have got it pinned! I hope the Truck is fixable and you can get out again soon! All the best Luke.
  13. No worries! Emily is great, she started school this year and is loving it! keeps asking "am I going to school today?" on the weekends, then gets upset when you tell her it's closed! Pups are doing really well, getting the second injection this week coming so will be able to go out into the big wide world! We've still got Titch (The runt). I was hoping to find him a home by now. Maybe I'm being a bit too picky with who they go to but their going to be large, muscular bull breeds so have been looking for responsible owners, that have experience with larger breeds or hunting dogs with high pre
  14. I didn't/don't have experienced guys to learn from, I'm sure it's quicker to learn that way but if you can't get out with others then just get out there with your dog and learn the old fashioned way, by your mistakes/successes. Here's a few tips I've learnt for myself so far or gleaned from reading other members posts on here. I'm still fairly new to Lurchers myself so if I've made any mistakes then hopefully someone will correct me. Windy, raining nights are the best nights to get out - The sound of the rain on the grass seems to cover any small noise's you make and keeps the rabbits
  15. Moon Phase Calender I usually go out every Sunday, moon or no moon but I know some prefer to wait for decent conditions until they get out, so I thought I would post this usefull calender so you can plan your nights out. All the Best Luke.
  16. I've been looking through some of the topics of the Competition and noticed quite a few saying about the fact it was a full moon when they met up, so thought this might make it a bit easier to plan your meets? All the Best Moon Phase Calender
  17. Well done guys, sounds like you made the best of an average night (well average for you, I'd be over the moon to get that many runs on Rabbits! lol) Fair play to you Mally for going out at all! I believe your still recovering from swine flu aren't you??? Congratulations LDR, sounds like Bruce is doing you proud again and good luck in the next round. All the best guys, Luke
  18. So am I! he was definately the looker of the Litter and I thought as he was the smallest and lightest, he would of been the first to go. I'll be advertising in the paper this week.
  19. Pups are doing really well (I've still got the Runt) Their turning into right cheeky little pups and trying to chew everything! I now just give them a rabbit leg each to keep them quiet! Tia's now got boobs like an 80yr old but still lets them try and feed, we've got to keep pulling them off. Their both proving fast learners and are sitting and recalling straight away now and are also learning to wait for their food. A few pics I took last week. their a bit blurry as I had to use my Camera phone (they just won't stay still long enough!) The Runt or 'Titch' as were calling him now. (Whos
  20. Sorry it took me so long to get a pic of them, I kept forgetting whenever I was round there. I believe they might be for Whippets? they seem too small for a Lurcher/Greyhound. he has two of these, although the second has lost the cord from inside. He also has two Hunting whips, he's dated them to about 1910-1930 by the Silver stamp marks on the handles. Sorry their not great photo's (camera phone)
  21. Have you considered a FAC rated air rifle? for the ranges your talking about I would of thought it would be ideal. No matter how quiet a Rimfire, it will never beat an air rifle for noise levels and with a decent moderator on they really are whisper quiet. As already stated the most noise comes from the bullet strike, so an airrifle (even FAC rated) will make much less noise hitting it's target. My first time out with a Rimmy I was actually surprised at the noise they make, I had been told how quiet they were but actually their louder than you think. All the best with your decision L
  22. You thinking what I'm thinking! I feel a holiday coming on!
  23. I almost had a Husky cross Bullmastiff! christ knows what that would of turned out like! she was nowhere near her season but still seemed to stand for him! dirty little tart!
  24. You would of thought a Deerhound would wear a whippet like a willy warmer!!!
  25. I think your missing the point, it WAS tried and it failed. To many numpty's posting naughty photo's. It used to have a few cracking Bull breeds on there, with stories and photo's of some proper fit, working Bull breeds, but then kids started posting photo's of their fat Staffs and Am bulls working quarry. It was a good section and will be sorely missed but there's not a hope in hell of it coming back. Stabs used to be the Mod for the section so he knows what he's on about. He can't be on 24/7 deleting inapropriate posts. ATB
