  1. Dont rush your pup into anything. As has been said, if you can go out with some experienced SENSIBLE lads, that would be the best thing. Has your Grandad got a mate who will take you under his wing? Main thing is dont overface your pup. 8 months is early enough for rats.
  2. Had a begging letter from the rspca with a freepost address You would think they would have learnt after all the bricks etc that they received last time they did a freepost address!! Here it is in case any generous person wants to send them some sort of donation Tony Woodley FREEPOST SN1457 MELKSHAM SN12 7BR
  3. Excellent pics L&A. Its no wonder Trilby's face looks like it does Believe it or not, couldn't find a single bite on Bristle. She may not have done quite as much as some of the others but she was getting well in there. If you were to get an off road wheelchair when you get your knee done later this week you could come out on sunday
  4. Very good day for a number of reasons. Doing the keeper a good turn so hopefully we'll be able to go back next year! Getting L and A's pup going. By the end of the day she was hunting like an old stager! Killed a few rats herself and was marking and digging by the middle of the afternoon. For a 7 month old pup on only her 2nd outing, she did very well. Watching Water Badger doing his 200 yard rat coursing, without a dog! Tyla and I were in fits! Hopefully LandA was taking pictures. WB has so much enthusiasm and introduced some new phrases into the field sports vocabulary! Was a ha
  5. That solid tubing looks just the right size for that bit of flexible plastic pipe I got for you. Its long enough so the plastic pipe wont melt.
  6. http://s1178.photobucket.com/albums/x372/blackstaff2/Ratting%20March%202/?albumview=slideshow If you wade through all these pics you will see Blackstaff's staff bitch. Not my favourite breed but she is a good allrounder.
  7. I agree with what you're saying Tyla. Dont know if anything can be done but it makes me reluctant to answer posts by people I dont know, or know of. For example, I know about the wormer that can be fatal to collies (ivermectin) but none of the fuckwits want to take any notice of a grumpy old shit shoveller so why should i bother replying to a post when I just know some argumentative little scrote is going to tell me I dont know what I'm talking about.
  8. Good write up L and A. Next time we'll try to go to a field with no sheep shit type distractions. Pup did really well for her 1st time out. Has she smashed her way thro' the plastic yet Blackstaff, was that the whole 517 pics you took? Bloody good pics mind. Can you email me the hare ones please? Lizzie has quite recovered from the full body charge by Dolly. Payback for Midge flattening Pearl I suppose Enjoyable morning all round I thought. The keeper wants us back next week if you can make it
  9. Could have done with Billy and his offer of piggy backs to look after the older generation!! On a serious note, dont know what was different about today, but the buggers were bolting. Made for a good day, even if the poor old bugger was having to hobble round the field to get the deduns away from Ollie Keepers wife was delighted at our efforts so we are welcome back next week
  10. They are made in China now and although not quite the same they still do the biz. I bought my first one when the only alternative was wax cotton. Got comments like "Forgot to take your dressing gown off then" (I had a blue n black check bush shirt) Shut every bugger up one very wet shoot day when I was the only dry person at the end of the day! Yes, they do get heavy when wet but you will stay warm, even in a wet swannie. Body heat stops wet coming through but lean against something, or take it off, and the wet will come through. I was told to always shake it well when you take it of
  11. Tyla did the write up because he likes doing it and he does it better than me Hoping to go again on sunday if you and Bill are up for it. The dog bus wouldnt have got there last sunday Would have been fun watching you try tho
  12. As you say, its frustrating that with so many rats, the buggers refuse to bolt. Next time we go we ought to kidnap Bill to carry the rat bucket for us!! Thats if Blackstaff cries off again of course
  13. Ask Blackstaff. His bitch works well. (Didnt see Tyla's post when I put this up)
  14. Providing you have a friendly farmer or shepherd, lambing time is the best time for stockbreaking. Ewes are very protective of their lambs and pup or young dog learns very quickly that sheep are a no no.
  15. Very good account of scottish deerhounds running red stags in the book Beth by Ernest Lewis. Might be fiction but he did his research. Excellent book, well worth the reading.
  16. Good pics Blackstaff. You do get carried away when you get going with the heavyweight camera dont you Tyla, your blue hat is in my kitchen. Did think about putting it on ebay but then thought I probably wouldnt get any bids on it. Can make sunday if you want to have another go but only the morning as I'm working.
  17. Spoke to a keeper friend other day about ratting. Yes, we got rats he said. Went to have a look, holes and runs everywhere. Was only allowed to take a couple of people with me so couldn't take the whole team. Tyla, Blackstaff, his boy Bill and myself with 6 terriers made up the crew. Arrived, saw the holes, saw the runs and thought" faark, this is gonna be a BIG day" Huh, yeah right! Smoker worked fine, rats would not bolt! Thought well tis a bit exposed here on the track, try in the maize plot! Good idea but didnt work out, the buggers would not bolt. Reduced to digging where the terrier
  18. Gonna have to give Bill the number for childline! You were hanging him by his feet down holes last week as well. Its just not on
  19. Cant see the one you're after but they may be able to get it for you. http://www.heinnie.com/Knives/Cold-Steel-Knives/c-1-92-127/
