  1. That wasn't exactly made clear in your original post, Corky This all reminds me of Jasper Carrott: 'Only one way to deal with an unidentified predator......blow it's bloody head off!'
  2. Yes, mate I am for real. And as far as the biology goes, I DO know what I'm talking about. The Potato Famine was a disaster caused by a biological phenomenon, compounded by (understandable) ignorance, and sheer bloody callousness and uncaring. So there's no argument there.
  3. You'll be head high in them if you grow foxgloves. I've got some pure white wild ones in my garden, that I collected from my Dad's allottment near Sheffield.
  4. From a biological point of view, the Potato Famine could have been largely avoided if the Blight damaged potatoes had been left in the ground. Potato Blight kills off the leaves. It damages the tubers slightly, but what caused the problems was the farmers (quite understandably) digging up the tubers and clamping them. They then rotted. If they'd have been left, most would have survived, and although the yield would have been less, and there would have been problems, it wouldn't have been anywhere near as bad as it was. Sorry to go off at a tangent.
  5. Depends whether it was a feral ferret or a polecat. Impossible to tell. Even more impossible if you don't even see what it is you're shooting It's not so much about what was shot, as about responsible shooting, isn't it?
  6. Point taken. But you also have a problem with hedgehogs, which aren't a problem in my part of the world. I've not seen any evidence that feral ferret colonies are any worse than polecat populations here. Which is where I was thinking of when I made the comment.
  7. The time I'm thinking of was far longer ago than 1000 years ago. Seems to me that the Clan system was simply the formalisation of the sort of social system that was rather prevalent in prehistory. That of mutually supportive extended families. Ie a 'tribal' system. Only difference between Scotland and the rest of the British Isles seems to be that the Scots held onto it rather longer.
  8. Glad to hear you say that. My objection to the shooting of the animal in this thread isn't that it was shot. If it was positively identified as a mink then that's the best thing to do with it. It was the fact that the shooter didn't have a clue what it was, but shot it anyway. Hence my comment about 'amateur' being a good name for Corky. As far as I'm aware, polecats (pure or hybrids) don't pose the problem to local wildlife that mink do. And you can't generally tell a hybrid from pure polecat just by looking at it.
  9. I'm going back a bit further than that, Tom. Just how far back does the Clan system go?
  10. chase the bunny,do you hunt? C'mon Caz. Answer the man's question
  11. This all assumes that all Scots are a homogeneous entity. They aren't. The Lowland Scots are different from the Highland Scots, and both are different from those that come from the north east of Scotland who are more Scandinavian in origin and culture. Not as mongrel as the English though, I'll grant that.
  12. Are you for real this is a hunting forum what do you think we all do every time we hunt? I'm with meerihunter on this one. If I saw a Saluki worrying sheep I'd shoot it without a second thought.
  13. Do they give shotgun licences out with cornflakes nowadays? 'amateur' is just about right in my opinion.
  14. It's not just on the 'anti' threads. There's a sizeable minority here, mostly kids, but a few adults as well, for whom violence, verbal or physical is the only solution they've got for anything that annoys/frustrates them. Maybe they haven't got the brains to think of any other solution, maybe it's just trying to be the (virtual) hard man. Either way it makes hunters as a whole look like knuckle-draggers and does the site no favours.
  15. It'a what us old buggers do, mate.... Repeat ourselves
  16. True. It's been said many times on here by the mods that people need to think before they post, but still it happens, the and the 'pre-ban' nonsense. Still, it's much easier to blame someone else than your own stupidity, is it not?
  17. You're right there. Sub Q is the method not the content. You can still have the content I described for sub Q though, and that's what the conversation was about.
  18. I think it depends on the problem with the ferret and the ability of the owner to kill it efficiently and painlessly. In a 'kicking' scenario there's not an issue. You just do it. if it's a long-term debilitating illness with no quality of life then it's the vets for me. I also think there's a difference between 'being alive' and 'being conscious'. I strongly suspect that a ferret with it's skull split open, if alive would be unconscious till death.
  19. If you want a plum tomato, good for cooking and sauces, try RomaVF
  20. I'd confirm that they do better in poor soil. Don't expect the sort of germination rates that you get in commercial seed. Wild flower seeds can take up to 6-7 years to sprout. Old gardening saying: 'One year's seed, seven year's weed'
  21. Angling. Weight training. Taking the piss out of arseholes.....
  22. Shouldn't you be called 'jockoleeds' then?
  23. Sub cutaneous injections (sub-Q to those who like to be flash ) are sugar and salts in sterile solution. There's nothing magic about them, or expensive. £50 is outrageous. I only paid that for an out of hours consultation and steroid injection for a ferret I stood on one Saturday night....
  24. Not a clue mate. Sounds bloody expensive though. The electrolyte itself is relatively cheap.
