  2. countrymansweekly might be what you are looking for. Countrymans Weekly ............ If your serious about your dogs and sport, EDRD .......
  3. If yours are collie greyhound there'll be no limit to what you can teach them. All game should be brought back live to hand, injured or not (assuming thats what you want them to do). Never, if at all possible, train a sapling to retreive in the company of other dogs as it can lead to bad habits, a circling around you on return from the retreive being one, being afraid of the other dog snatching at his prize being another and making it hard mouthed, again, another term used in gundog circles, and an undesirable trait in both. A lot is common to training of all working dogs, seems like your
  4. A lurcher is a very intelligent animal,or can be in the right hands; it's not realised by a lot of people that work them, and are more than able to work to whistle, possibly better than a lot of gundogs due to pastoral breeding in their make up, however, lurchers and longdogs are two different sorts. Although they can look very similar, and run like the wind in pursuit of prey, quite often thats where the similarity ends. Longdogs are a mix of sighthound breeds, i.e Greyhound X Whippet or Saluki X Greyhound( or a host of other mixes), there is no pastoral breeding in a true longdogs make up,
  5. Bet that first chick took some catching Jasper
  6. Hi Holland As with gundogs, retreiving will be a vital part of the dogs future, especially so if you intend rabbiting with them, same principles apply as with your gundogs, train seperately at all times, use a dummy, perhaps with a rabbitt skin on to get them retreiving to hand as you would a gundog, exactly the same. The more work you put in to their discipline and training now, the more rewards you'll reap with them later in life. Artic was right to say that they are still , in my opinion also, a bit young to start running hard on a lamp, although some do, and with some of the lighter
  7. Try shaking a half full box of matches, that'll bring them in
  8. Warrens - they are bombproof, got twenty or so myself. And they lay lots of nice sized eggs, mostly one a day each, but less when moulting etc. They wont take any notice of your dogs once they get used to them, and if they're in a pen as well, Bobs your uncle and Fanny's your Aunt. Good luck and enjoy. WAB
  9. It's this weekend coming folks. Phone the Secretary if you want any details, weather is promising to be set fair . Enjoy.
  10. About the same pace as a trotting horse in harness, a fast trot, without breaking into a canter, for the majority of it, then after a mile or two when theire muscles have warmed up a bit, speed it up for a mile , then back down, I find 12 MPH is ample as warming up speed, obviously depends on the leg length of your dog. But it does get them in good nick, not as good as coursing something obviously, but a very good back up. Keep an eye on the feet though, to much on roads can sometimes cause splits etc in the pads. Obviously, as has been stated, the best way, time permitting is to get your
  11. The last time I asked about an open ticket to our firearms Dept, I was tol"Theres no such thing ", but when my ticket came back it was worded in such a way that left it open im my opinion. "To where the licence holder has permission from the Chief constable for that area, and also from the person / s who own the ground or sporting shooting rights, that he(the licence holder) deems the ground suitable", not quoted verbattum, but along those lines. Now that sounds pretty open to me but the Firearms Dept said, "No such thing", By the way have had a FAC for 25 years, perhaps it's their way of u

  15. A terrier that wants to scrap with other dogs is no use to man nor beast, no matterr how good they may be at their work, theres enough good terriers out there that dont have that trait. The best working terriers I have ever seen have been the most humble, non aggressive dogs you could ever wish to see, but demons at their work. Sometimes it may be a socialising problem, tru enough, but also it can sometimes rear it's ugly head in certain strains of terrier. A fighter will completely f@ck up the balance in your kennells, also you might find in the fullness of time that you'll end up going ou
  16. I know this show is advertised in various magazines, but not all of us take magazines do we. Thought I might put it up for all to look at, it's a cracking show, in the lakelands of Wales. Many classes for terriers, lurchers and Hounds. Also Bull cross class and qualifiers for various other shows and competitions. If you think your dog has what it takes in the show ring and you like a dabble, take it there and see some more like minded people. It's a great day out in classic scenery and among other "salt of the earth" working dog people. Please dont ask me for any more details as I have

  19. sam looks a nic e dog, just a few questions is he ok with kids ? does he wine when he has not got your attention like a bull terrier ? has he been cut or is he still a full dog ? I would have a good home for him he would run with a Lurcher and they would have pups next year. if he is suitableI would be willing to give you £50 if that is ok ? give me a call if you can on 07850 530730 Might be an idea to wait and see if he's good enough to breed out of before you go ahead with it mate. Theres enough on the dog carrousel as it is without any more being added. Hope you get a good hom
