  1. All the cylinders are the same, they have the same BS number (steel or alloy) and as such are the same regardless of the valve. If a cylinder can be used underwater then it can be subjected to the more regular scuba testing schedule. if it has surface use only marked on it, then the filling center can happily fill them subject to the surface only testing regulations or can choose to not fill them if not satisfied that it is safe to do so. The gauge will help with this, but unless the testing requirements have changed since i owned a scuba center a coupe of years ago, then the gauge on the valv
  2. I was at a fishing board AGM with the wildlife crime officer there, to give a talk. He told us that the effort going onto stopping poaching was going to dramatically increase, those poaching were often also involved in other illegal activities and this was an easy route in to get them and their properties searched. It appears to be slowly working, as he had a number of examples where a simple poaching crime lead to prosecutions for other activities. He also told us that there are now 3 (i think) specialist PF's in Scotland just for wildlife crimes, and it was their job to increase the num
  3. I have two very distinct rabbiting grounds, one where we can shoot all day out to 70 yards and get good results with CZ.22 and CCI subs, and another where we have to shoot 90 to 130 yards and use the HMR there. The 70 yard bit has a great warren at 105 yards however and to save taking two rifles we regularly take good numbers off a mound, rifle on a bipod, with the .22. I have balistic turrets on the scope, and spent a good bit of time practicing and setting a second zero point for 105 with the .22. We have found the rifle more than capable if properly set up. Ok, we do miss from time to t
  4. The rabbits always seem scarce at this time of year i find. It is bloody cold most years at this time in NE scotland, and they alway lie low. I was out stalking last week however and the ground was moving with rabbits on one hill, so they are still there. I dont think we should worry too much about them, they bounce back quickly. I also dont think it matters if it guns, dogs, snares or ferreters that take them, you can oly take them once and it matters not a jot them method of hunting, it wee take the last one there will be none left.
  5. I have had a couple of trips out of Peterhead recently, stubble fields inland. Plenty of geese about but real timid, it is just too warm and they are getting plenty food, so not keen to come into deeks. We had just 4 for a good few thousand turning to the deeks and then veering off, and this appears to be the story for the whole NE corner, birds just not coming to the deeks. It needs to be colder and far windier for good sport. The duck splashes would appear to be better, with good numbers on all the ones i work.
  6. I still have my 70's, 80's and 90's cars - that are my daily drivers! I have a 78 1500 triumph spitfire, currently in the garage undergoing a rolling restoration for next summer. A couple of welds required and a lick of paint but nothing serious (i hope) My Winter, shooting and fishing car is an 89 Defender 200TDI 110 station wagon - a great truck regularly up to the top of the mountains stalking and at the grouse. I really like it and often use it as my daily driver. And my "nice" car is a xj8 3.2 Jag, a bit thirsty but a nice way to get about. It is old but near perfect and well
  7. There is plenty of free stalking about, in some areas. I dont pay for any of my stalking (well £25 a year is my share of one bit) and we manage a small surplus of deer. If we take 10 a year we are doing well and quite happy. The problem is this can be destroyed in a couple of evenings. I hear a lot about "real" dogmen. I would hope that they would respect others ground and if they poach they take one for the pot and leave no evidence. We are sure that we are actually being poached by rifle, and the good thing about this is if they get caught just once they lose everything. Sad but true
  8. i know my ground is getting poached. I could not care less about the one for the pot boys, this has gone on forever, care not a jot about a lad with an air rifle, i guess we all started this way, but adults shooting deer at night and selling them is not on. i lease it and know some locals are poaching - selling deer cheap. they are shooting with night vision. We have put up IR cameras, so we can see what they see, we have given out night vision to a couple of local friends who are on the ground more than us, so when they see their vehical they can see what is being done and most imp
  9. i have found the advice given here very interesting, i am in a similar situation. I have been shooting for years, but have never worked a dog. I have a pal, a gun dog trainer with a lab pup with my name on it. He is holding it for me whilst i battle with the decision over taking a dog, or leaving it a year or so. We already have a dog as a house pet, an elderly english bull terrier and i have had dogs all my life, but never a working one. I am looking for an all rounder, a pet, a dog to locate shot deer, retreave game and also to flush game. I am told that as a jack of all trades a lab is
  10. I did a lot of research and SACS was the best deal for me. From my point of view it seems you pay them and then if you are out, as long as you are not competing, you are covered. I met a few of them at the game fair and they were honest real folks, interested in what i did. On the BASCS site, i felt to be honest they were looking over my shoulder to see if anyone important was passing.I was a BASC member for years, never called or claimed, so the deal with SACS was fine. we have a wee syndicate and get another healthy discount for this. For the price of a carryout meal for 2 it is exce
  11. The Diver Dave wader team had another red letter day out this week. We try to take a day clear of work once a month and go fishing or stalking together, and after successful outings to the Dee and Spey we were looking for another fishing venue. After repairing a couple of pairs of waders for Ghillie and goose guide John Lewis we were invited to join him on the Ythan Estuary, an area I probably had not fished for 30 years. Bob and Iain are keen sea trout anglers, I am more of a salmon angler so I suppose it was a fair compromise. The plan was to meet at the Newburgh Bridge at 0630, and catch th
  12. With respect to our friends in Southern Ireland, the politics and conflict problems i do not fully understand, as they were at their worst before i was about, those that choose to live in this land, as opposed to all the alternatives out there, should respect what is here, our traditions and beliefs. I am not saying that others cannot have other beliefs, but that mine are no more wrong than theirs. No belief from centuries ago is provabable either way so lets simply let each other believe anything or nothing and not preach at each other. Wars have been started over what may or may not have hap
  13. I had a 21lb rainbow pellet pig at Loch Insch in aberdeenshire. It fought slowly and not particularly hard, but just lumberd about for some 15 minutes. It was shaped more like a carp than a wild trout but was quite huge, my biggest by miles. Loch insch used to have lots of monsters, and getting a double was quite normal, we would get one every couple of trips. I saw a fish of 28lb caught, and if i remember correctly the fishery record was over 30lb. I dont fish for pellet pigs anymore, i prefer salmon now - my biggest is strangely -------------21lb! However that fish fought like a
  14. As a footnote to my stalking trip i decided to mount the trophy and it has been in my freezer since last year. I ordered a form, eyes, ears and a couple of bits and pieces a couple of weeks ago and spent a very pleasant sunday preping the hide and form. I mounted it the next day and have been tweaking it since then. it is finally ready and today i proudly put on the dining room wall, along with a 10 pointer and medal buck. However, i think enough is enough and understanding Mrs diver suggests her patience will not stand another! I know it is not perfect but i did it myself and am happ
  15. Before i retired from diving, my company supplied the safety divers for both Petrofac (RGIT) and Falc Nutec. I dived there myself from time to time when we could not get divers or they did not have valid certs. Many of my friends are still instructors or divers there. It is a scary thing for non or poor swimmers, but as long as you believe you will be ok, trust your instructors and understand you are underwater for a few short seconds then you will be fine. You are only 18 inches down! Escape holding your breath once the unit stops moving takes less time than reading this post. It is a co
  16. I am no expert in these things, but i think any appeal or intervention by shooting body such as BASC will take a few months, and in the end if you were to go down that route you could just piss them off. They are human and will be sticking to their own force / company rules, even if they do not believe them to be correct or fair themselves as individuals. With all the recent firearm offences in the press they will be making sure that every grant is fully checked out, so that nothing can come back at the force. If they have said that you should apply in 8 months plus time, then i would do j
  17. i use the opinel's as well, they are cheap and sharp knives. I also have a couple of the wee opinel saws, for butchering deer and for sawing off the odd branch on the track through my shooting ground to stop it scoring the landy more than necessary! I have one or two in the landy, one in each shooting jacket and a couple in my shooting rucksack, bought over they years for under £10 each if i remember correctly. I regularly loose them, only to find them in a differrent jacket or in the larder, hence i have so many. I also tend to buy them when i am buying lots of other bits and pieces
  18. My stalking pal has a chinese bushnell on his 243. He has had it for i think 2 years now and has never had a single problem with it, it is every bit as good as my scopes including a really good bushnell. I guess replicas, like replica watches have come quite a way i the last few years.
  19. I am involved with the River Dee and Don Trusts in Aberdeenshire, and on the Don Board. The Boards employ bailiffs and the trust employs biologists. Quite regularly we also employ helpers for spacific projects. I am also involved in the angling industry, i used to be involved in the diving industry, though retired from this almost 3 years ago now, selling up before the recession, and now i fix anglers waders to dive suit standards, so they last properly. It just pays for my shooting and fishing, and the odd pint!
  20. I was out stalking yesterday, hopless in the deep crunchy snow but great to see what is on the ground. We were able to identify the usual roe and red deer tracks, which is great to see, and we also saw the usual mountain hare and rabbit on the low ground. We saw fox tracks, showing the claw marks as usual, and following their usual routs and tracks, and we are quite used to these, but we also saw tracks that were slightly larger but without visible claw marks. Would these have been wild cat tracks? We do have wildcat in the area, though only very occassionally see them but these tracks wer
  21. sorry if i have missed something, but why did the police take the gun? I have very occassionally met the police when i have been out, and they have never even given the guns a second look, last time we met them they had blocked my landy in, and we thought that they had done this for some reason. I called the helpline and told them that their car had blocked me in and that i was now back at my car. It turned out they had parked there knowing we were shooting (they heard the shots)but on a totally un related matter. They were most appologetic for blocking us in, saying it was the only place
  22. many Thanks for that. I thought it would work, and will mess about with it more soon. I guess the scope on minimum mag and the NV just focused could be the answer. the NV has a wee IR light but i also have a IR cover for my lamp so this may work well. t will be a deal of messing about but will be fun trying i guess. The lamp on the landy roof is a 3-400mtr light and the filter works excellently. I know it will be a struggle to get everything set right but that is part of the fun! By the way, what does &nbsp mean. I am sure it will be obvious when explaned but as an old chap i am no
  23. I am planning fitting a Yucon night vision NMVT 3x42 to my bushnel scope on my CZ 22, as an experiment. I have a bit of rubber tube and have managed to get it to attach the two together, and by turning the whole NV unit i can get the crosshairs clearly into vision. I cannot test it properly at the moment as it is too light with all the snow on the ground, but will this set up work? The rubber tube is solid enough to make the whole unit stable and it is comfortable in use. In a darkened garage it works but nothing is in focus as the whole set up will not allow focus at such short ranges.
  24. I agree with all that has been said about chest shots not stopping rabbits quickly. When i did a lot of air gun shooting i discovered that the only effective way of stopping them everytime was head shots. Now with a .22 RF i still find that rabbits bounce about and often make it back to the burrow after chest shots, there are times when only a chest shot is possible. Now, as i get older and no longer need to shoot something every time i take a gun out i make sure i only hear shoot rabbits, it has so many advantages. I also use CCI segments, which i find absolutly superb, though expensive.
