  1. John I think you are right, we compared it to a skull in our local shop, a bronze medal and this was quite a bit larger. We did discuss it but we kind of dont "get" the medal idea. Our thoughts are why give us a medal when the deer did all the hard work growing the antlers, ok i guess this is a slightly thought process but we are happy enough. All we did was point and press! And as i said, his big brother is still out there! We have seen 4 or 5 with similar heads, and it is interesting that they are very much larger and more advanced re velvet than the bucks on our higher ground inlan
  2. Out stalking with a pal 3 weeks ago at our ground on Deeside we spotted a few good bucks. We wanted to harvest one and the plan was for me to do the stalk, spot then watch the deer and then stay back and guide my pal in to the shot. We take turns and it works well for us. The smaller of a pair of bucks presented a shot and it was taken, about 125 mtr out with a 100gn .243, with the beast going down cleanly, and it turned out to be a cracker! It was a cracking head and we decided to have a go at keeping more than a photo and the antlers. This was only my second attempt but i think i
  3. As the little cylinder fills, the gas in it compresses and heats up, adiabatic compression if i remember correctly. The quicker it is filled the hotter it will get. As the gas inside the cylinder cools it will contract and you will loose pressure, hence it is best to fill it slowly. If you are filling from a scuba cylinder as the gas flows the big cylinder will get colder, as it looses pressure and the gas is effectivly expanding. if you are filling from a pump both get hot due to friction and the pressure drop is increased. simple physics, dont worry about it, just do it slowly
  4. We should always use clean comp. air in our pcp's However for the purposes of discussion: Other basically inert gases will have different properties and will certainly effect the way a pcp operates. CO2 is ok but very temperature dependant, much more so than other gases because of the way it is stored. It boils off from liquid to gas to produce the pressure and this rate of boiling depends on ambient temperature. Gases such as Argon, have larger molecules and are heavier than air, when breathed as argonox make you sound like Barry white as they move more slowly through the voice box. T
  5. Nitrogen is an inert gas and as said before makes up 79% of air. Never consider using oxygen or acetylene to fill a pcp, it will explode. It may possibly explode when filling. It will cetainly explode eventually when firing. The explosion happens because oxygen lowers the auto ignition of everything it is in contact with. All it needs to ignite is heat and fuel. The fuel is present in the seals and lubricants in your gun and then the heat is added during compression, eg when you fill your gun or fire it. When you then pressurise the gas, you further lower the auto ignition temperature of the
  6. That could easily have been me. I was out with a nice chap from south england, with his teanage son and little lad, who was in charge of the biscuits! we had a cracking flight, and i got the birds i wanted, so all good. I was tempted to go out again in the next week or so, but think i will wait a while, and finish of the buck season first. D
  7. I go out with ian Gill of North east shooting breaks a couple of times during the season, and my experiences have always been good. Good price, good laugh, not involved in slagging off everyone else and safe. I had my first day of the season last week, and we had a cracker, just north of strathbeg, and birds were moving in huge numbers. I actually found it difficult when a large number of tightly packed birds come in, my instinct was just to shoot into the middle, and not target birds! Once i calmed down ( only my second season on the geese) and got rid of the new season nerves i had a great f
  8. I use North East Shooting Breaks, and always been happy with the service. I book him regularly for his deer stalking http://www.northeastshootingbreaks.co.uk/ or 07807777568 The owner is Ian Gill, real nice and genuine chap. Not sure what he has available for this year, but he is certainly worth contacting.
  9. Sorry but you are a little expensive for a out of test cylinder there. In Aberdeen I sell used cylinders with a new test for £75 and old uns for £15. New 3ltrs go for £ - 90, new 12 ltr are only £150 with full test. With "surface use only" stencilled on this is 5 years. The one you have there looks like a 9ltr ex fire service one. In test these get £45, out of test, I am sorry but are almost worthless. I paid £2.50 each for 300 of these a few years ago! The details on the neck are vital, and need to be readable to be able to be filled, eg working pressure and test date. I recommend
