What Caliber to use to learn to shoot big game ?
dicehorn replied to ST111's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Perhaps so that we can get a better idea of what to say if you can tell us what game you plan to shoot - plains game or dangerous game like the 375 suggests?? -
Shauny - 1st up I don't reload 243 but 3 other calibres I have looked up this load and 40g of H4350 in a 95gn head should not make you nervous. Someone else who reloads 243 should be along to give an opinion - all I will say is that bullet heads around this weight are quite hard to get right accuracy wise and stability wise - most people I know who reload this calibre settle for heads in the 's not the 90's. And a Welshman to confuse us all !!! I have a Tikka M595 in .17 rem - never knew it as a magnum. Mine has fired many hundreds of shots - the secret of barrel life is in the cleaning whether I fire one or ten shots. This little gun regularly drops foxes well out past 200 yards. I will admit it was a b****r to find the right load for it Peter

Personally if you value your hearing long term - my advice is stay away from ALL moulded ear defenders - Its not your ear hole that needs protecting but the bit behind the ear. Only bins can protect your hearing properly Proof of what I am saying is this- How many top flight clay shooters wear moulded ear defenders??? You see, they are better informed than we are to the dangers of sudden loud bangs I rest my case Peter

Jamie, I'm thinking of the .17 Rem Fireball, Remington Seven in camo with a 20" barrel and I was hoping that the RFB would replace the .17HMR but if I'm only going to get 2,000 rounds through it before it needs rebarreling then it will have to be rebarreled every year ! Not what I was hoping for ! I have a Tikka M595 in 17 Rem it has had well over 1000 rounds through it and still groups sub .25 at 100 yds. A lot of 17 rem users are putting moly bullets through them which increases barrel life. According to the American forums the new 17 rem barrels have now overcome the barrel burn

.22-250 load and general questions.
dicehorn replied to TOMY,HMR's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
I would like to know where you get Lapua in 22.250 please -
I use night vision when I am involved with a difficult fox. However, from the picture you are painting regarding these foxes, it would appear you are developing a regular pattern with first getting through the gate and then switching on the lamp - equally the foxes are developing a pattern - hear gate, see light - run for cover. I would suggest without night vision you consider getting into the field earlier than usual (on foot) find a place down wind with a good bullet stop and take it from there sitting over shooting sticks or off the bipod. I would finally say this - there is la

That would also be my conclusion bearing in mind the blood on it's nose.

AFAIK the answer is no in England but the rifle must have a minimum muzzle energy of 1,700 foot pounds is a legal requirement. However in Scotland For roe deer, where the bullet must weigh at least 50 grains AND have a minimum muzzle velocity of 2,450 feet per second AND a minimum muzzle energy of 1,000 foot pounds may be used - this opens the door for calibres such as 223 and 22.250. For all deer of any other species - the bullet must weigh at least 100 grains AND have a minimum muzzle velocity of 2,450 feet per second AND a minimum muzzle energy of 1,750 foot pounds.

Try this and click on your preferred bullet weight http://stevespages.com/224_8.html

Looking at a couple of my reference books relating to the .223, I see that your load is about half way to the max for a 55g which is fine - more powder = more velocity but does not always mean more accuracy With due respect, your rifle at 120 yds is capable of producing sub 1" quite easily. Not many years ago I was under the impression that it was necessary to seat the bullet within a few thou of the lands. I took on a Blaser in 22.250 using 55g Nosler and with this idea of keeping near the lands, I had quite a job getting any reasonable groups. I therefore shortened the length of the

Does anybody have Shotgun informing forms
dicehorn replied to sureshot's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Hi If you go to http://www.devon-cornwall.police.uk/v3/pdfstore/transfer.pdf This is for Devon & Cornwall, however if you print it off and then simply amend the address to your police issuing force. HTH Peter -
Hi Tone You are in need of a good reloading manual that is for sure! There are many manuals out there however most are produced by powder or bullet manufacturers and so are biased towards their own stuff. The best book I reckon is called The ABC's of Reloading and you can read about it and buy it here http://www.play.com/Books/Books/-/215/272/...earchtype=genre With regard to measuring the bullet length, as someone has already said, you will need a Comparator (this measures from the all important ogive and not from the tip which is an unreliable way of measuring). Good tale there FD. The right sort of buck to take out. I used the call last Friday knowing there was a good buck to take out in the area I was in. Unfortunately I had two does trot over to me followed by the master buck - I thought I was outside of his territory. He is easily a bronze - hopefully if he is still about next season he will be a silver. I have seen him grow up from a spiker and he has a very noticeable scar on the top of his back leg - when I first saw it four years ago it was flapping open as a result with an encounter with a lurcher Shall be very tempted next season to

What is needed for pigeon hunting
dicehorn replied to shaneo95's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
Hi As already said Gun, cartridges, decoy plastic pigeons a hide. The most important other thing you will need is knowledge. Your best bet really is to invite someone who is experienced at this - that person will teach you more in a day than what you will learn (generally the hard way) being out 10 times on your own. Failing phoning a friend. plan the day you intend to go, then the day before just go there with a pair of binos and study which way the birds are flighting in and to what part of the field they are favouring - no point going and setting up in a place that is convenien -
Is your Lee neck sizer new or second hand? If it is second hand - that could be your problem - the neck expander ball could have worn down well below the manufacturer's specification Personally I have always steered well away from Lee reloading kit, but I do know that some of their stuff is OK. I have always used either Redding or RCBS stuff and never had a problem There are some that crimp their cases, however, I feel that with the right equipment there is no need to carry out that procedure. Have you a friend nearby who reloads 223 - using his neck die could narrow your probl

Hi If you are going for deer (mainly) fox and Boar then yes. Other may suggest .270 for all 3 animals - personally having shot both the 308 would get my vote It was once difficult to get fox written on your certificate for deer AND fox with a calibre such as 308, but that is now all changing. As stated don't shoot them - they may be worth keeping as they may have a monetary value. Also don't throw away the box no matter what condition as this also may have a value - Don't repair it with cello tape either as that will make it totally worthless If you can put up a photo of the case and head stamp, a collector friend of mine would be able to give you a rough valuation. Having said that, Holland & Holland cases tend not to make great money as it was a very popular cartridge/gun company. The money in cartridges is in the small towns/villages where the local hardware store had c

Hi SS In your original post you said 'RBSS has been taken over by Ray Ward Gunsmiths'. My point was that Wards had only taken over the shop at RBSS, - not the Shooting School
-
RBSS has been taken over by Ray Ward Gunsmiths. And, yes, the Litt's name is set to continue. It will be something like Litts within Sportsman or similar. The shooting ground has been bought by them too and is open for business now with Andrew the old manager carrying on there. The shop in Newport should be opening up in about a fortnight. The shop may move from there if the lease is up, however. As for finances, the figure is somewhere in the mind bogglingly staggering region of £52m. Regards SS Well I had heard that Wards have taken over the shop vacated by Litts an

Friday evening stalk/lamp.

Lovely colour to the antlers - also a good read Peter -
Dicehorn Help me out with these 5 Deer species, I'm confused as we have at least 6 in the wild! There are suggestions of other small populations of escapees as well ...... So which 5 do the BDS promote the welfare of??? Sorry Deks slip of the finger - tis 6 not counting also the red/sika hybrids Peter
-
They have been on my Favourites page for a few years - if there is any change to deer laws etc , these people are generally the first to get it onto their web page - which is more than I can say for the BDS and BASC Those fallow look like they were in tip top condition. Peter

Went out a couple of evenings ago to film some deer on one of my patches - no the rut has not started here yet. In one 25 acre field with woodland on 3 sides I counted 13 roe and amongst them were 5 bucks - nothing very striking the best two being small 6 pointers. As they were about 130 yards away I called them and two came running up the hill to within 30 yards then both quickly veered off when they got my scent. Having heard the call and then scenting me that will be the last time I will be able to try that with these particular two deer this season. Peter.
