  1. The pup is eight months and already bigger than the other lab. He's doing well I'm taking it slowly with him I think he'll make the grade.
  2. No mate a nice sharp spade a bit of hacking and a bit of swearing soon get through. How would you know you don't dig, actually your drink tea till some one shouts I'm breaking through then you run over grab the spade and insist on pics.
  3. I wasn't on about trial dogs as I don't rate them for working either dogging in or a shoot day they rely on there handlers to much and cant work on there own.
  4. If you work a dog flat out every day as hard as the dog can work eventually something will give in the dog. Either the dog will pick up an injury or just burn him self out, all dogs will work through pain and exhaustion just because they love doing the job they were born for but it's a responsible owner that assess the dogs and rests it when required. If you have a working dog you have to slowly increase the dogs stamina and that doesn't include walking as walking and working are very different for the dog. Anyway just my thoughts.
  5. All I would say is please don't believe that piece of paper you get from the kennel club is any guarantee that your dog is a cocker or springer when it could well be a sprocker I hope not I thought I had two labs lol
  6. I really don't see why people are obsessed just lately with crossing breeds. Gundogs are being crossed sprockers, springadors, labradoodle etc but why? Just pick one of the pure breeds that suits the time of shooting you do. If these crosses were any good surely they would have been done years ago. Don't even get started on pet dogs look in the local paper and every possible combination of dog is being crossed and the charging stupid money to match the dogs stupid breed name they radomly came up with. Sorry if it seems like a rant but it is, I wish people would stick to breeding two of the
  7. terrier beagle cocker thats a very ramdom mix, put it to a lurch and you have every possible hunting scenario covered with that dog.
  8. I don't mean to be funny but your dog won't walk to heel, it's chews birds before giving them to you, and you said any commands will fall on deaf ears when he is sent on a runner, should you really be picking up with him? Sound like he needs to do a good dose of basic training.
  9. The problem is most probably not the colour its the owner. Most Guns put the gun and dog away on Feb 1 then come the season they whistle the long forgotten dog and expect it to work perfectly.
  10. If it's gun shy it's no good, simple as that.
  11. Well we start shooting in 6 days, and whilst doggin in this morning one of the labs has gone lame on his front leg. No thorns in it or cuts, can't feel any heat in it think he has pulled a muscle or sprained something. Not a good time of year for it to happen just hope it heals in time then on light duties.
  12. I'm not 100% sure, but I think if you spread it flat and scrap the skin with a blade until all fat and soft tissue is removed then should dry soft.
  13. Just sampling some blackberry vodka I've made, must say it goes down a treat

  15. As long as you dog has a good nose and you trust there judgement. Just leave them to find them. Like Lab said trial dogs will struggle were as a good picking up or rough shooting dog will do well.
