Had a call from a mate at the weekend asking me to take my border pup over to a farm for some ratting. We were working a chicken shed thats 30 yards long and on skids so it can be towed around. There was 5 of us working 4 dogs, two border/pats one border/laky and my border. Well the plan was to drag it on to clean ground and let the terriers nail any that were bolting, farm had told us there are hundreds of rats in the shed. The tractors pulled the shed 100 yards across the field and only 10 bolted, so we thought it was the usual "I've got millions of rats" when there is only a dozen or so.

Just a thought but I would have them lightly clipped just to slow down there straying, just till they regard the pen as home. Just an idea but there are people on here with a lot more experience than me. -

Whats wrong with them being in a kennel for a long period compared to a house? Peopple have some stupid ideas that a house is a better place for a dog to be left, why is it better do they watch telly or pop on the laptop to check THL. In a kennel or a house a dog for 90% of the time sleeps. All a dog needs is a warm draught free and safe place to retire and relax to inbetween periods of exercise/training or working, he doesn't care if its in kennel or house. It's amazing when people say he will be bored on his own, as long as there are excerised and mentally stimulated regulary i.e th

As stated above I absolutley hate cats, lets look at the facts. An anti will lobby all day against killing magpies, crows, jay, rooks, jackdaws, foxes, badgers, stoats etc yet they own a cat or two that will most probably kill more sonf=g birds than all of the above. I ask people on the foot paths to keep there dogs under tight control or on a lead to save ground nesting birds, cats do what they like. If my dogs were to go next door and shit all over the neighbours garden then they would be straight round but its ok for there cats to come over and do it on mine, which is only at ni

Mine kennel is dry and draught proof, bedding is thick straw in winter and vet bed in summer. I do have a heat lamp as said before for injured dogs and pups. End of the day there animals with a coat for a reason there built to live outside, just as long as its dry and no drafts then its fine. People think there doing the dogs a favour keeping them warm but they won't get a good coat on them and will feel the cold more whilst out working, especially if there wet waiting for the next drive to start etc.

Got a few around the centre of the shoot, just to feed whats left. Wasn't inpressed with the flying ability of the black necks we had so not really to bothered if we get any wild broods from them.

Why is it people especially in this part of the forum, get obsessed with the breeding of there terriers. If they work well for you and your happy with the dog why should it matter who the sire and dam are. Obviously if the sire and dam are proven workers then breed but everyone argues on here that these lines are the best and this blokes line is shit and he is a bull shitter etc. Alot of people on here seem to spend more time bitching on the internet rather than getting out.
