Everything else you said was spot on. This is the first time I have heard of either GWPs or DDs being difficult to get to ground scent. Perhaps you inverted the terms?? I have had DDs for a dozen years. Hunted and trained with many DDs and a few GWPs (among many other breeds) here in the USA. All that I have seen have had no problem with air or ground scent. If anything they prefer tracking over air scenting. Do the GWPs in the UK have a lot of Pointer in them? The AKC GSPs, and no few GWPs, in the States do. That might explain a preference to air scenting or a lack of ground tracking.
  3. Good they're keepin the traditions alive. I go out with my DD, he trails n trees as well and retrieves a whole lot better.
  4. Underbody coating for cars in a spray can encases the nest. Let it dry and then knock it down or set it on fire, dealers choice!
  5. Jazzed just reading about it, woot! thanks for taking the time to share your pics n experiences! ATB
  6. pile on, more the merrier!! ATB from this side of the pond.
  7. Wouldn't start him on coons. Get him some experience on milder fur such as rabbit or possums. Then try live trapping coons and start him on young-of-the-year. FWIW. ATB
  8. Stunning. Simply amazing, wow. ATB -John
  9. Nice pup! Possums are a great intro to fur, gets their confidence up. Looks like Kansas fur season (which includes possums) is Mid-November to the end of January. I'm from Wisconsin, so just going by what's on the web there. In WI: year round open season, no bag limit on possums.
  10. We always use 'Mineral Oil'. Enough to coat the ear canal when you massage it. Usually 10 days or so, but keep it up until you haven't seen mites for several days. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mineral_oil
  11. That's exactly why the last 1/3 to 1/2 of a working dogs tail should be docked. I've seen it in the cattails where it looked like someone had walked along with a can of red spray paint in each hand. Followed the blood trail to find a worried owner trying to wrap his shirt around the dog's tail. I cleaned it, put Styptic powder, gauze, vet wrap and Duct tape on it for him. Silly for being afield so unprepared, but it seemed like he had never even considered the possibility before. Guess we all get caught with our pants down the first time.
  12. Drahthaars do all that and more. I wonder if a cross with a good working Deerhound or Staghound would make a better yote and hog dog. Would we then lose too many of the other qualities? How cold of a nose do you need? My DD will do 3 day old tracks on wounded game, but only hot trails unwounded. Fine for me, most all my hunting is on relatively small Public areas. (Relative to what I'd want for cold nosed hounds.)
  13. I hear ya Pops. Too many have stood by for too long watching our rights dwindle. In Wisconsin we can't "disturb a burrow, nest or den" of any species at any time, ever. What kinda cr*p is that?!!! Dog did his job, now I can't do right by him: flush the quarry or dispatch it and let him proudly carry it as his reward for a job well done? It's what he lives for, for feck's sake! Soooo Bogus! I've watched the hunting regs go from 25 pages in my youth to six 50 page booklets of regs now. In NoDak, its all on one 8-1/2 x 11" sheet and they even have room for some maps! Not only can't use th
  14. Sorry to hear about your buddies dogs Mosby. I've been on the bank shuckin boots n coat a few times. Consider myself fortunate he's always sorted things out on his own.
  15. Not to start an argument with ya Tim, but both dogs are long on enthusiasm and short on technique. One had the coon by the foreleg and cheek most of the time and the other never let go of the butt. Like you said, only one minute, but that minute wasn't real promising. Keep in mind it's you that chose to showcase that particular minute. I'm all for varmit control, do it myself. Very unfortunate, but Hastings is right. In the current climate we shouldn't be giving the anti's ammo.
