  4. I put a deposit on a .223 cz exclusive today,it has a twist rate of 1:12,it will be used for lamping foxes mainly, was just wondering what ammo would be best suited for this particular twist rate, light, medium or heavy load,as ageneral rule do you choose the slowest twist rate for the heaviest bullet you are going to shoot,or would most factory ammo shoot ok through it
  5. I have just received my new leupold vx111 4.5-14-50 from the states, and very impressed with it so far,m going to put it on my .17hmr,im going to use the mounts i already had on it,they are double locking mounts, whats the best way to go about setting it up,should i keep the front and rear mount as far apart on the tube as possible to make it more sturdy,or is there any guidelines that i should adhere to.I have got some great advice off you lads lately and realy appreciate it,cheers again, smasher
  6. Does this mean that a quicker twist rate is better because you have more bullet choice,

  9. Can a hungagian s&b be got with a higher magnification or do they only do the fixed power ones
  10. Just a quick question to the lads who regularly shoot foxes out to 200yards and beyond on the lamp, what mag do you set your scope at,or do you crank it up for these shoots,i know the clarity of the scope has a lot to do with it,but they do seem a small target at 200-300 yards at 8x,and going over the 8x you start to loose some of the clarity, just trying to educate myself a bit, cheers in advance for your replies
  11. was talkin to the people at b&F said it would be ready for the start of next season,it will do the same job but is half the size

Im considering getting a 223 for lamping foxes, what make would you lads recommend for the job,i had a tikka inmind or maybe a cz,something that gives good tight groups, another possibility is a 243 using some of the lighter loads what are your veiws on this and which of the two calibers would you say is better suited for the job?
  13. A friend of mine is going to the states this week and i have asked him to bring me back a scope,I was thinking about a leupold vx111 4.5-14-50,its to go on a 17hmr mainly for rabbits and also the odd fox on the lamp,im also looking into getting a 223 for lamping foxes so it might end up on that,i was thinking about a duplex retical as it seems a safe bet,i would be interested in getting some opinions from you lads,do you think this is a good choice of scope or would you recommend another,
  14. Out today with Big toe of here'the ground we were working today was way up inthe hills,so plenty of snow about.we arrived at 8 and the veiw was breath taking,We had to hike a mile or so to the earth we were doing today as the roads were impassable,it was hard work for the dogs just getting there as the snow was 6-8 inches deep, when we reached the earth we entered the old russell dog smasher and it was down to bussiness,we got a mark of 1.3 and set to work, the first foot or so was handy, then we hit roots, then stone followed by real compact clay,it was like iron,we broke the graft on the way dow
  15. its always hard putting a dog that has served you well into retirement, good workas always
  16. Give me the B&f any day, saves all that goin around bet over tryin to get a mark, walkin in zig zags and through brambles tryin to locate the dog,but i always bring a mark 1 along as back up
  17. I sure hope so,because like yourself i have also bred a litter of pups this way, which are all with myself and people i know and dig with so i will know exactly how they turn out, what i had planed was to put the original dog to a good proven bitch and then one of there offspring back to one of the father/daughter pups i have recently breed, thus keeping things tight,
  18. Any one who says they have never had to drop a second hole,is either a liar or hasnt been in the game very long, however if it happens on a regular occurance to the same dog, then there's a problem. The best of dogs, even while glued up can still get dragged about a bit, especialylike was said earlier if it happens to be mid tube. For me a 100% dog is a dog that 'FINDS AND STAYS TILL DUG,simple as
  19. if only they could talk, they could tell some stories,a real vetran,
  20. nice pics mate,is that the same dog you had 8 hour dig with a while back,1 or 2 digs more this season and that will see us finished up,then its out scouting for a few new earths for next season.
  21. hav'nt posted in a while so heres one from this weekend,a new earth on some new ground on the side of a steep bank, was out with joe cash of here,we entered the old russell dog at the top of the bank,it was a one hole affair, left him for a while, then tried the bandf whch was reading 3.6,so we climbed down the bank and got a mark of 1.8,into the bank,we took the side off the bank and then we had to go downwards at a mark of 1.1,we got to the dog after about 2 hrs working his game well, lifted dog and released game for another day.we then had to knock the top of the bank into the hole to backfill
  22. what mag do the lads that shoot foxes at 200-300 yards on the lamp have there sight at,or do they crank it up for theese shots?
  23. the red dog's still doin the bussiness for you, nice sturdy little terrier,ps.hows his nose comming along, remember you saying it was giving him a bit of jip
  24. Did you ever breed any pups from him,to carry on his legacy,he's a tidy lookin dog that has served you well over the years by the sound of things, and the memories he's given you will stay with you for a life time.
  25. This is one of my veterns,he is 12-13 years old,had a lot of digs with him over the years,he is nuttal/cowan on the bitches side back to border cross on the dogs side,he has been dug to 3 times this season at this ripe old age,on one of those digs when we got to him and lifted him he keeled over on his side and had to be revived, after a tense minute or 2 he came back to himself,we let the game run and the dog wanted in to the stop end again so let him have a look and he was on again, got to the dog lifted him and let game off, another memorable day was digging to him with 4 backed up in a stop e
