  1. johns right, the most usable ammount of light to the human eye is 7mm this is why 6x42, 8x56 etc are good because you divide the objective by the mag and in both these cases you get the magic 7mm exit pupil, as you crank up the mag on a variable scope you make the exit pupil smaller and you start to lose clarity and light. hope this helps. i use an 8x56 schmidt by the way great scope no muckin about with mag. alan. Thats very interesting to know, does this apply to day time shooting also or would there be enough light availible in this situation,or is it the case that by dividing the obj
  2. Cheers for all the imput lads, much appreciated it would seem a lot of it is down to personal choice, but with no real high mag, 12 being the max and 6 to 8 the most commonly used, ill be setting mine at about 9,happy medium.any more veiws or opinions would greatfully received.

  6. Alrght BIG TOE,by the start of the season your pup will be 9 months old, bring it along to get use to the other dogs and the smells and sounds, get it used to traveling the tubes after an experienced dog has checked their is nothing at home, its all part of the learning process, let him lookon as the other dogs do the work,he may want to join in but id hold off till he gets to about 12 to 14 months old,let him have look but dont give him to much to soon as they can be easily ruined. If he is keen by around 14+ months try him on his own in a handy earth.Alot of young terriers have been ruined by la
  7. The fact that the young dog is traveling and finding game is a good start,He mabe just hasnt realised what he is meant to do in this situation,I wouldnt be writtng him off at this early stage.I would run him on with an experienced dog in a handy earth for a dig or two just to shw him what he is meant to do.Then try him on his own in an easy earth if he keeps comming away then this is the form he will always have and he no longer deserves a place in your kennels
  8. That has all the halmarks of a size 9 boot mate,

  11. Went for a walk today with the semi auto and my little russell bitch. Was workin her in some heavy cover and gorse bushes,The bitch worked well and bolted plenty of rabbits,I was on my own and dont you just know it most of the rabbits bolted on the opposite side of the hedges, however i managed to bag 9.She also bolted a fox, and was hot on its heals so i could'nt get a safe shot at it so had to let it run for another day.An enjoyable day,and as for the fox in the words of Arnie'ILL BE BACK'
  12. I was recently faced with this dilema,a local sheep farmer asked me to deal with a fox he deemed to be troublesome, and asked me if i could sort it out. What was i to do?say no and offend him,he might think i was only shooting foxes to suit my self when it suited me,or oblige him and help him out with his problem. So this is what i decided to do,i walked the ground loking for the earth which i found under a clump of gorse bushes, it was obvious there was cubs at home.I decided the most humane thing to do was try and shoot the vixen first and then deal with the cubs by shooting them or failing th

  16. SMASHER. i have vx-iii.4.5-14-50 with the duplex reticle i looked at the varmint but as deker stated you will lose it against a dark background.this scope has been on my 17hmr and i found it more than adequate for rabitts to 150 yds.it really shines in low light so i switched it to my 17 rem/tikka- lilja barrel i have a night vision unit [archer] on it and use it for day shooting, was out last sunday shooting bunnies and range finding and hitting them out to 260 yds the scope does it,.i would say the sight picture is so good and with the side parallax you get your moneys worth.i would say the
  17. I am going to biy a new scope from the states, thinking of a leopold vx111 6-18-50 to go on my 17 hmr,for rabbits, magpies etc.out to about 150 yards, which are small targets at that distance, also the ocasional fox on the lamp.what i was wondering is which rectical would best suit.I was thinking of a fine rectical as a head shot for a rabbit at distance is a pretty small target.Would you agree with this choice or if not what would you recommend
