    If I were considering my first shotgun for general shooting then I would be seriously considering a 12 bore. The margin for error is larger, the ammunition choice is larger, the quarry species it will happily take is broader and the range of guns is much better. I disagree that the small bores, .410, 28 etc are not capable of killing anything other than ground game, it is down to the capability of the person holding it. However, for a newbie to shotgunning, a 12 will give you far more confidence.

    Chris, When you mentioned to the Firearms Department about fitting the cabinet did you tell them you are fitting it inside a garage? Or are they aware that it was your intention? Only reason I ask is that they can be very fussy when it comes to cabinets being installed in outbuildings and not to an internal load bearing wall of a house.

When I fired a few at my pattern target, when I managed to hit it at 30 yards, it was going straight through 4" of hardwood. I've messed about with a box before. I bought them for knocking crows nests out with and found them f*****g useless compared to even an ounce of No.6 as the pellets just wiz straight through the nests without really departing any energy to give the necessary 'punch'.     Is that right? I was under the impression that "X" bore solid slug can be entered on to an FAC. Hey, all this talk of large bore stuff is a bit worrying............ B53hunt; trust me large bore shotgun ammo is not very effective at all, little bit like trying to hit a goose with a .410 seems like a good idea, just don't work very well. Many years ago, a friend and I had a load of SG cartridges given to us, we set up a 50gal steel drum at 60 yards and shot 10 rounds at it, we hit the drum once. If you NEED big bore stuff, do the job properly and apply for an FAC, buy a couple of high seats

    Well you can get solid slugs (one lump of lead, normally rifled) but they can only be purchased using an FAC as they are FAC rated ammunition and have to be fired through an FAC Shotgun. With shot, the largest commercially produced is called "LG" or Large Game, which in a 36gr load is 5 lumps of lead. LG is rarely seen, SG, the next step down, which is 9 lumps is commonly found in most gun shops. Neither have any sort of pattern and i've found to be utterly useless unless you happen to be standing next to the thing you're shooting. As for weight, the heaviest i've seen commerciall

    I've used a number of AAA shells through different guns, but there is one thing to remember when using both heavy loads and large shot. Heavily choking a gun is all well and good until it becomes overly choked for the weight of the shot which will result in the pattern being "blown" i.e. not enough pellets in the kill zone because they have been distorted whilst going through the choke and don't fly properly. I have patterned a few AAA's and found that anything over 36gr loads would be "blown" if fired through full choke, so the Express 50gr 3" shells in AAA would not deliver the best

    Had a strange year around here or all things fruit. Blackberries have been patchy with some areas laden with them, others are just bare. Sloes seem to be abundant everywhere which isn't such a bad thing The only orchard we have on the shoot has been decimated by a cow invasion so no apples or pears this year. Looks like just the sloe gin for me this year.
