Thanks for the news article link. Pretty obvious that they fabricated it to get the police involved. The police found no evidence of anyone being shot..... Really?

.410 Humane Dispatch Pistol, Help Needed.

I have a business and deal with close range dispatch. My FEO suggested that I get one before I end up slotting myself by accident Shooting trapped foxes in cages is bloody dangerous with a .223. -

I hadn't really thought about the cost to be fair. I just want something reliable and that doesn't look like a piece of gas pipe nailed to a plank. -

If only we could get that data on the buggers we need to shoot -
I went out tonight with the intention of putting holes in two particular foxes pelts. On getting to the first farm there were rabbits everywhere. The .17hmr was firmly locked in the cabinet miles away so the .223 had to suffice. Normally I sell rabbits on but as I needed bait the damage was going to be acceptable. The first field yielded twelve rabbits. On shooting the final one I spotted a pair of rather bright eyes not fifty yards away. He didn't even seem to have heard the shot. I lined him up just to see him slip away behind the hedge to our left. The only way to see him now was to pu

Charlie not playing the game.....
firepower replied to firepower's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Nope Sat out from a quarter to four in anticipation. At 4.45 I saw a white flash from the treeline around where I baited up. Then a dark shape came slinking from the same place. Safety came off and I lined up on a poxy feral cat. I gave it until six then took a meander down to find that all the bait had been snaffled earlier. Looks like an earlier start tomorrow or Friday -

One of my farmers called me the other day telling me that there is a fox hanging around his pheasant pens. The farm is arable with dense woodlands containing the pens. After several days and nights trying to connect with the red furred, pointy eared marauder I was drawing a blank. Ok so a new tack was called for and seeing obvious runs on the edges of the woods out came the dry dog food and tuna oil. First lot disappeared on the first night as did the subsequent lots on the following days. Now charlie has been pinned to a particular spot all that remained was to find out what time he is moochi

From a responsible shooters point of view it is always going to be subjective. A short range shot that is going to guarantee a quick death with a .22 is a good shot. There are plenty of idiots who will take long range shots at foxes in the hope that a certain calibre will kill them even though their skill levels are not up to par

Over the years I have seen so many new shooters struggle to zero a rifle so here is one easy way. Firstly if there is any wind, even a slight breeze, get your binoculars out and watch the wildlife, you are in the countryside after all so enjoy it. Once the air is still you can begin. The target is unimportant other than it having a suitable and obviously visible point to aim at. A white background is rather handy too as it allows you to see where the bullet strikes. The rest for the rifle is paramount, it must be rock solid.Wobbling around on the bonnet of your shooting bus w

Wildcat P8 on all of mine apart from a T8 on my .243. It is possible to load subsonic .223 but it is considered a "specialist" round
-
I don't think that there really is a calibre suitable for both unless you are not eating the rabbits. I would suggest .22 / .17hmr for the rabbits and .223 for foxes (personal preference) The latter will kill rabbit at extended ranges but does tend to wreck them

browning a bolt,howa 1500,remmington 700,, 243
firepower replied to tenbob's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I have a Remmy 700 in .308 and it is a reliable rock solid piece of kit. I also have 2 Browning X-Bolts( the successor to the A-Bolt ) in both .223 and .243 they are in stainless with synthetic stocks. Not for everyone, many prefer the blued/wood version but they perform like champs and take abuse that the blued ones would suffer from. Howa I have newer owned so couldn't comment but I am sure that many here can -
I would ask for a .22 lr and a .17hmr and a .223 depending on your Police forces views on .17 for fox. All you need to have is "good cause" with the land you have it should be a forgone conclusion as long as the land is passed for those calibers

Cheers, I don't intend to. Every one that I clatter is one less that the tree huggers will "liberate" into the countryside

In this day and age , Who can afford to pay that kind of money per animal , Are these people millionaires or Billionaires I have been out to people that have been quoted £400 for a night regardless of success. Bear in mind that these are urban foxes for the most part, all townies are rich
