  1. Only took a few pics of the first lurcher class (bull x) then got fed up cos I couldnt get anywhere near the ring because of all the parked cars Was a gorgeous day, and the show had the makings of a lovely day but was spoiled by some idiot who had an out of control bull mastiff-type dog which was unsupervised and left on an unsubstantial rope lead & broke loose and attacking the dog next to mine in the rough coated dog class Wasn't nice to watch a dog like that aggressive, loose and uncontrolled in that sort of environment with young children about, let alone the damage it did to
  2. fawn bitch, deer x grey, black dog, beardie x grey deer x grey, first cross
  3. wouldn t like to say too much really except that that you need fairly tough resilient dogs to run in places like that. It always looks daunting when you first look at it, but never seems so bad once you are in there working, you get "acclimatised" - some places are hard to stand up, I suppose the dogs must feel the same - when they run in it so regularly it becomes very normal - they were brought up from youngish pups rabbiting places like that nuala learning her trade as a youngster
  4. they werent a pretty sight at the time Martin covered in scrapes and bruises
  5. As I have mentioned previously, we have to continue ferreting at the moment, to make up for lost time, and to carry out some pest control work to keep our permission going; something we really don't want to lose. We arranged to meet with the keeper this morning for him to show us some previously unferreted new ground. mmmmmm nice rabbiting land and yes youve guessed it - our newest running land ah well you can't win em all Despite the land, we had a very good morning, only out for 4 hours and a good tally at the end. All worked well. We had the hobs out today, as now
  6. Thank you. Its a Nikon D90, got it for Christmas, just starting to find my way round it now Yes no dock leaves stealthy, fortunately we dont do many hedgerows
  7. Yes theres still quite a bit about, given that we haven't ferreted it as much in the last few weeks due to the dogs injuries, and we have been doing some previously unferreted areas recently. We also have a few more new bits to go at, though these will be "pest control" jobs as we have to continue quite a bit into the summer - not something I particularly like doing, summer ferreting can be hard work, but have to if we are to keep the permission we have.
  8. We noticed a huge difference last week on the lower ground when we were doing a rabbit control job on some hedgerows near us, lots of baby & half grown rabbits about - have yet to see one up there, mind its been a harder winter than normal
  9. I'm not joking, they were very bad will keep practising though.
  10. Not sure what you mean about stock netting adam? fences they jump, pheasant pens they find a way under or they go round, but no they dont just stop
  11. Ive had a few days off work this week, and have made the most of it with rabbiting and lamping trips organised. We were out lamping last night then back out this morning, to our usual place - a bit of a blustery day today! It was one of those mornings that goes over fast and before we knew it we had a few in the bag - just the way I like it. All went well, ferrets bolting rabbits, and hardly any digs today - totally different to when we were on the lowlands - up here we havent seen any baby rabbits yet. Some more pics from today. I actually tried to video a bit of it, but I think I n
  12. I wouldnt want to run someone elses lurchers on that land, but its different when its your own. Our dogs were brought up running on that type of land from day one, so they've never known any different
  13. Not as warm as it looked, it was quite windy - when the wind died down the sun was nice and warm. Digs weren't too deep, there have been worse ones recently The one, it wasnt so much the thorns but the newly emerging nettles - they really sting this time of year.
  14. We had a rabbit control job on today, the land was all hedgerows so the nets were dusted down, first time they've been out all season Considering the dogs aren't used to working with nets much, or at least they haven't for a long time, they did ok. As you might expect this time of year, there weren't so many bolts, with young around, so not a great deal of action, and quite a lot of digging. Still we ended the morning with with 15 so not a bad few hours work. A few pics, no action shots today, for obvious reasons plenty of this
  15. We were back out yesterday with both lurchers, both of them having had injuries for what has seemed like months. Because our permission is on keepered land, coupled with the fact that the bad weather and injuries have curtailed our ferreting trips this year, we have to keep going a little longer, to keep our permission going. We had a really good day out, it was fine weather, though cold. Both dogs worked really well, with the ferrets doing a good job bolting most of the rabbits, something that isn't guaranteed this time of year. Fortunately only one of the rabbits caught had young ones
  16. Doesnt matter how many you got as long as you enjoyed being out. Looks like the little lad enjoyed himself
  17. You can now buy Chloramphenicol over the counter at the chemist - its good stuff
  18. The were lovely collies, I really liked them, very good natured, unlike some can be (I have one) and they did very well at the ratting. At one point we bolted a couple of rabbits out from under some rubbish - first I thought it was a giant rat off they went on the chase giving it yip all the way
  19. not quite big bald beautiful, the collie was remembering what had bolted there the last time it was there, when a load of rats bolted out of the shed. The farmer had cleaned the shed out the week before we got there and there were no rats in that bit
  20. Good post & pics Shell, would have loved to see you trying to catch the chucks Nice to see Nim getting involved at a young age
  21. We had an invite out this weekend with Nettlerash's son and his girlfriend, to have a mooch about a farm near us. Made a nice change not to set off at dawn to arrive at a reasonable time We were accompanied by his girlfriends two collies and his mate. I was really impressed with the way the collies marked, they had been here themselves previously and certainly knew the ropes. Red remembered this spot from the last time A good mark from red & sky typical, dogs started marking under these tyres and eventually a nest full of young
  22. Nice to see the youngsters getting involved, thats what its all about Looks like you had a good day. Did the russell take a nasty bite?
