Sand ,dos and donts
Squirrel_Basher replied to Squirrel_Basher's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Most of the sandy places here are under a metre deep but some are massive going to 6m deep through sand ,brash and eventually bed rock and you bet your life foxy is under the rock in a fissure but these days id rather walk by and find a place more fitting for my age lol.Deep digs are the playground for the young . Iv'e had sand fall on me as documented many times and it scared the hell out of me .I'e also had a torch go out on me when upside down in a place .Lad dropped in another torch which I missed but i could see the eyes of the quarry from its glow not a foot from my face .Got dragg -

Proper job mate . May there be many more . -
Eddie you probably know this yourself but ill tell you anyway .Buzzards will not consistently take rabbits but all will try at some stage . Some say kites take game birds but they don'.

Following on from another thread and regardless of how the dog met it's end (rip poppy) i just thought id put down a few things ive noticed over the years in the sand we have here, bright yellow to orange through to dark brown. The first and most important rule of all is to dig the hole as wide if not wider as it's deep ,forget straight sides in sand and keep the top back from where your working .I'd rather a come shape in sand any day as long is the bottom is wide enough to work in . We never stand over the dog to dig when nearing the mark ,dig from either side where possible .

Read again Neil ,it does not say every terrier ever died to ground has been human error ,it says every terrier I've seen lost that way gas been from human error .Don' think past you read and well get on fine .I can see why some have jacked the forum tb because it' just a bitch fest . I'e never refrained from putting a dog anywhere in my younger days but I've regretted a few .I've never known a collapse that wasn't human induced by not digging a big enough hole .

In all the years I've been digging I've only ever seen dogs perish through human error and I make no apologies to anyone for this statement.

Neil mate ,it's very blinkered to think Buck and Braey were the only terriermen of that decade to produce a working type that was used to create what followed .The bloke that gifted me my first terrier Norman Dunn from my neck of the woods used to talk of many black type terriers up North as he put it..He was in his 60s then and talked of these men as old boys so putting them his father's age .My own thoughts are that Buck and Braey were the only two to of put pen to paper but just my thoughts .Anyway mate have a good season ATB, FD -
Brightmoor Bred Dog
Squirrel_Basher replied to Coursing mad 24's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
With respect mate ,your probably right but apparently every type or line goes back to them and I don' buy it .I can' see how two men could account for the diversity that followed . -
Brightmoor Bred Dog
Squirrel_Basher replied to Coursing mad 24's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Does anyone know where Bill got his original stuff from and what he bred to to get the type he required .I'd like to think there's a few pockets of the type going strong but again I think it's been absorbed by now . -

Nothing to do with wanting something for nothing mate .There are still loads of lads on here that have never paid a penny for a dog in their lives but have yards of workers the likes to fulfil any workload .Im glad the dogs gone to a decent working home but why the drama to get there .Just gift the dog to a digging lad ,tis simple and more appreciated in the long run .

Seen some of the stuff go in my early years and was impressed .What didn't impress me was the dog aggression ,even though I had sane problems with what I was breeding at the time .Early entering stuff if memory is right and compact workers too.Without getting the full picture I'd say most of the stuff has been absorbed by other breeders and the real deal is pretty much a rarity these days .
