  1. ok pip, next time you work a harddog try this. first put the bar in, and next your hear to ground. you will hear a lot more with your ear to ground than you will with a bar in the ground. but at the same time you will hear a bayer better with a bar than you would with your ear to the ground. give that a go next time pip.vibration from the bark or bay sends it up to the bar. try it all the best friedrice im fairly sure that pip means putting his ear to the hole that is made by the bar, not having his ear to the bar, when the barhole is directly above the dog you can hear the grunts and b
  2. have to agree with pip on this one, when i was a young lad starting out we had to use the spit to locate the action below as we couldnt afford a locator, invaluable piece of kit IMO, if the box is showing that the terrier has settled in one spot but no sound can be heard then a quick listen through the bar hole will tell you if the dog is "in grips" or just trying to dig or push on, also for finding the tube incase the quarry has dug itself in.i wouldnt go digging without one
  3. TOO YOUNG!!! try her @ 12months or so,or even a bit older if you can wait
  4. theses pair?? well my mate had his only working terrier killed in a kennell fight so i gave him one of them, he has had two digs over him, the one i kept has started to catch on , he travelled the last spot i tryed him in and went to the stuff but only did 15 minutes then got bored and came out so had to dig it with another dog, but hopefully he will come ok
  5. thanks for the comments guys, there were 2 black n tans in the litter, dog and bitch, since you guys seem to like them here is a couple more pics of them.
  6. cheers pickaxe, one of their other half brothers was dug too yesterday, only a 3 ft dig but he done well never made a sound tho, but he might learn the hard way yet, hes 22 months old and that was his 6th dig i think, so hope mine follow on the same way
  7. these are the pups i kept from my bitches litter, the others went to my digging partners. and this is tim, half brother to the puppies, 12 months old a few days ago so might soon give
  8. those pups have some heads on them!!!!
  9. the vast majority of people on this site id say were not digging pre 1973,alot including myself were not even born, so even if there are guys on here who perhaps might have wittnessed this, well they couldnt really talk about it on an open forum could they!! but im pretty sure it has happened! obviously not on a regular basis .but any animal can be killed , if they have their windpipe closed off by strangulation, if brock got himself stuck and a strong powerfull terrier was able to get the right hold this is deffinatly possiable,IMHO
  10. fine looking young dog rio, looks well fit for the job, good luck with him
  11. 9 months is far too young to be worrying about a young dog not showing the signs,my mates bitch wouldnt look at a rat at a year old, at 20 months she had been out on lots of digs and showed no interest, he had nearly given up on her but as he had no other pup to run on at the time he decided to keep trying her. within a month or so she just clicked and started working, she is just 26 months old now but she is working well, has been dug several times now, infact im just home from digging her this evening. its hard to keep them when they arent showing much interest but sometimes it pays off
  12. this doesnt apply to n.ireland, its still legal to hunt here and to dig foxes.
  13. good work possum, looks like those coons get into some tricky places!
  14. if the dog is the best dog available then go for it, as others have said, work comes first, judge the dog on his ability below ground ,i wouldnt worry about him being undershot ,if he does his job what does it matter!! its not show dogs your breeding its workers!! good luck
  15. i have done this recently, father/daughter mating!! i have 7 healthy strong pups, all with good mouths, go for it mate!
  16. dont worry pip any that make the grade will be well tested, you know your self that they dont all make it, im just giving myself better odds by running them all on. as regards to the black n tan i think there must be lakeland in the sire somewhere, they are doulbe bred from him so its deffinatly coming from him. by the way mate no offence taken, as you say they are my kennells my dogs and my time so i will do what i feel is right for me.
  17. between me and my digging partner we are running them all on, so hopefully we should get a few good ones out of them
  18. bit of an update on the pups, they are 5 weeks now, they are wormed and weaned and doing well.
